Retired linebacker Rolando McClain has re-enrolled at the University of Alabama.
In a media Q&A, Crimson Tide coach Nick Saban revealed that McClain is back in school. When he retired last month, McClain said he was focused on getting his "personal life together." It appears McClain is doing just that by attempting to earn his degree before potentially returning to the NFL. Jun 11 - 8:24 PM

ILB Rolando McClain says he retired in order to focus on "getting my personal life together."

"Clearly, my decision to retire has raised some questions," McClain said. "Quite simply, I love football, but I have decided at this time it is in my best interest to focus on getting my personal life together. Beyond that, I'm not sure what the future holds for me, including football. This was entirely my decision and the Ravens have been very supportive during this process. I am very grateful for the opportunity they gave me and wish them the best of luck in the future. God willing, maybe I'll play for them one day." Good for McClain. If he is truthfully trying to right his wrongs, we may not have seen the last of the 23-year-old.

A source tells Profootballtalk that retired ILB Rolando McClain "wants to focus solely on getting himself together before continuing his football career."

In other words, McClain will be back in the NFL -- perhaps next season -- if he can keep himself out of trouble and take care of all of his legal issues. The Ravens have offered to be a resource for McClain, and they'll stash him on the reserve/retired list in order to have him under contract once/if he returns. The tough part for McClain is going to be the whole staying out of trouble thing.

A source close to Rolando McClain insisted to Yahoo Sports that McClain is serious about retirement at age 23.

"He has no desire to play, none whatsoever," said the source. "When he told me, I was sort of caught off guard and sort of not. You stop for a second and say, 'Wait, how could you quit?' But then you think again and say, 'He didn’t like doing it.'" We don't doubt McClain is serious about retirement at this moment, but he could easily rediscover the "itch" when he runs out of money.

Ravens placed ILB Rolando McClain on the reserve/retired list.

"Rolando let me know that he plans to retire from the NFL," GM Ozzie Newsome said in a statement. "We have placed him on the Reserve/Retired list." It's a bizarre ending to a tumultuous career, but likely a false one. McClain doesn't turn 24 until July, and is only 37 months removed from being the No. 8 pick of the 2010 draft. He has numerous unresolved legal issues, however, and was facing release had he not "retired." If McClain can't get his life and career on track, he'll finish with just 244 tackles, seven sacks and one forced fumble across 41 games. The Ravens are moving forward with second-rounder Arthur Brown, Jameel McClain, Albert McClellan, and Josh Bynes at inside linebacker.
May 15 - 1:04 PM

NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reports there's "still a real chance" the Ravens release troubled ILB Rolando McClain.

Assistant GM Eric DeCosta appeared to be greasing the skids for McClain to stay when he said the Ravens believed McClain deserved "a second chance," but he was apparently referring to the initial signing. Regardless of the semantics of DeCosta's statement, the fact that McClain has yet to be cut is a victory for his football future in and of itself. If the Ravens were dead-set on moving on, they would have already done so.
May 7 - 7:15 PM

Ravens assistant GM Eric DeCosta said the team thinks ILB Rolando McClain "warrants a second chance."

It's uncertain if McClain has already used that "second chance," since he was arrested three weeks ago for disorderly conduct and resisting arrest. McClain has plenty of skill as a two-down linebacker, and the Ravens likely want to see him on the field at least for OTAs in two weeks before cutting ties with him.
May 6 - 7:47 PM

Ravens ILB Rolando McClain entered a guilty plea for the window tint violation he received in January in Decatur, Alabama.

In exchange for the guilty plea, the city of Decatur dismissed the charge of providing a false name to police after he was pulled over. When asked to sign his name on the citation, McClain wrote "(Expletive), y'all." This isn't even McClain's latest run-in with the law. He has a July 9 court date stemming from his disorderly conduct and resisting arrest charges last month. McClain's future in Baltimore is up in the air.
May 6 - 6:26 PM

GM Ozzie Newsome says the Ravens are still "working (their) way through" ILB Rolando McClain's messy legal situation.

It's a victory for McClain that he's yet to be cut loose, but he's still facing an uphill battle to keep his roster spot. He can breathe a bit easier after the Ravens decided not to take an inside linebacker with the No. 32 pick, but there's a strong chance they address the position on day two.
Apr 26 - 11:24 AM

Ravens ILB Rolando McClain has court dates set for May 7 and July 9.

The May 7 date stems from McClain's January arrest for a window tint violation and providing false information to police, while the July 9 appearance is in regards to his disorderly conduct and resisting arrest charges from last weekend. McClain is lucky he's made it this far without getting released by the Ravens, but the odds are still stacked against him.
Apr 23 - 2:56 PM

Ravens ILB Rolando McClain's disorderly conduct and resisting arrest charges reportedly arose after McClain said "(expletive) the police" as he walked by an officer, and "tried to jerk his arms away twice" as he was handcuffed.

We're guessing "(expletive) the police" wasn't what the Ravens had in mind for a comeback credo when they gave McClain a second chance. Hopelessly immature and out of his depth as a professional, McClain is leaving a league that loves redemption stories little choice but to give up on him.
Apr 22 - 10:27 AM

The Ravens are "seeking more facts" on ILB Rolando McClain's latest arrest.

"The only information we have at this time is from media reports," said a team spokesman. That implies they've yet to speak with the mercurial linebacker, who was signed just 12 days ago. There are very few scenarios in which McClain keeps his roster spot. He won't find a third chance easy to come by.
Apr 22 - 9:10 AM

Ravens ILB Rolando McClain was arrested Sunday evening in Decatur (AL) for disorderly conduct and resisting arrest.

Eyewitnesses say police ordered McClain and several others to leave Pines Park after a large crowd had gathered. McClain refused and began "cursing" at officers, before being handcuffed, and bailing out of jail shortly thereafter. McClain has now been arrested three times in his hometown of Decatur since 2011. He needs to stop going back there for the sake of his livelihood, and perhaps his personal safety. Ravens GM Ozzie Newsome smartly guaranteed no portion of McClain's one-year, $700,000 contract.
Apr 21 - 11:30 PM

GM Ozzie Newsome expects the Ravens' locker room to provide "proper guidance" for troubled ILB Rolando McClain.

"As far as how he's going to conduct himself here, he's coming here just to be a part of this football team," Newsome said Tuesday. "I think the guys in the locker room will be able to provide him with the proper guidance." Newsome also stopped well short of guaranteeing McClain a starting job, saying he's "being given an opportunity to come in and make our 53-man squad. That's it." If the Ravens' "proper guidance" keeps McClain on the straight and narrow, he has a strong chance at earning a two-down gig.
Apr 16 - 7:42 PM

New Ravens ILB Rolando McClain's one-year deal includes $400,000 in "attainable" playing-time incentives.

It pushes the total value of his contract to $1.1 million, though none of it is guaranteed. According to the Baltimore Sun, McClain left money on the table to sign with the Ravens. Provided he stays out of trouble and has a good training camp, McClain has a strong chance at earning a starting job.
