Cowboys LB Rolando McClain's trial for resisting arrest and disorderly conduct will begin Friday in Decatur, Ala.

McClain's attorney had attempted to have the proceedings delayed so McClain wouldn't have to miss time in training camp, but the judge refused. The case has already been delayed three times. Even with the Cowboys' defense in utter disarray, McClain is a long shot to crack the 53-man roster.

ESPN Dallas' Todd Archer hinted LB Rolando McClain is not a lock to make the Cowboys' 53-man roster.

Acquired for basically a stick of gum and a thank you card, the Cowboys would feel little pain cutting McClain, though that is obviously not their best-case scenario. The No. 8 pick in the 2010 draft, McClain has the pedigree and talent to make a difference on a Dallas defense in desperate need of help. He will need a serious -- and unlikely -- change in attitude and work ethic to make it happen.

The draft pick the Ravens acquired for ILB Rolando McClain will escalate from a seventh- to sixth-round selection in 2015 if McClain plays 50 percent or more of the Cowboys' 2014 defensive snaps.

Baltimore would also send Dallas its 2015 seventh-round pick. If McClain spends five games on the Cowboys' 53-man roster this season, the sides will swap 2016 (not 2015) seventh-rounders. If the Ravens finish with a worse 2014 record, "then there is no swap." In other words, Dallas didn't give up much. Baltimore will hope McClain plays a lot this year, and that the Cowboys are bad. (Those latter two possibilities could very conceivably go hand in hand.)

Rolando McClain's agent says his client is "as excited about football as I've ever heard him."

At this point, we'll believe it when we see it. Since entering the NFL in 2010, McClain has retired twice, been arrested three times and showed up to a Ravens workout earlier this offseason late and out of shape. Former NFL player turned consultant Chuck Smith said McClain had the "worst attitude of any player I ever met while consulting."

Cowboys acquired ILB Rolando McClain and a 2016 seventh-round pick from the Ravens in exchange for a 2016 seventh-round pick.

Desperation in the wake of Sean Lee's ACL tear strikes. McClain was the No. 8 pick in the 2010 draft, but has "retired" twice in the last 15 months while saying his "heart pulls" him away from football. He's also been arrested three times since December 2011. Now likely in need of money, McClain reportedly wants to play again. He lands in a spot with plenty of opportunity, as Lee's injury left an already thin defense on life support. If 24-year-old McClain is motivated and in shape, he'll have a chance to enter the starting middle linebacker mix along with Justin Durant, Anthony Hitchens, and DeVonte Holloman. The meager trade compensation and McClain's non-guaranteed $700,000 contract leave the Cowboys with little risk. It's still impressive on Baltimore's behalf that GM Ozzie Newsome was able to get something -- even a small move up in round seven -- in return for McClain.

Ravens placed ILB Rolando McClain on the reserve/retired list.

It's the second time the Ravens have made this transaction in the last 12 months. It simply allows them to retain McClain's rights should he change his mind once again. For what it's worth, the former No. 8 overall pick says his retirement decision is final this time. McClain, 24, says his "heart pulls" him away from football.

ILB Rolando McClain is retiring from football again.

McClain showed up late for a conditioning test with the Ravens last Tuesday and then failed it. "If football made me complete I would play," he said in a text to ESPN. "But whenever I think of it my heart pulls me away from whatever reason. ... I'm done." McClain, the No. 8 overall pick in the 2010 draft, played in 41 career games. He's just 24 years old.
Apr 21 - 12:33 PM

The Baltimore Sun reports the "current plan" for ILB Rolando McClain is to report to the Ravens' offseason program as soon as Monday.

McClain caught flak for showing up to a mid-April conditioning test severely out of shape, but it's not especially surprising considering he's been away from football for nearly a year. Still only 24 years old, McClain is worth bringing to OTAs to see what he has left once he gets his fitness in order.
Apr 18 - 1:28 PM

Ravens reinstated ILB Rolando McClain from the reserve/retired list.

It's likely the first step toward releasing his rights. McClain bombed his Ravens tryout on Tuesday, showing up late before failing to even finish his conditioning test. It would be very surprising if he's kept on the Ravens' 90-man roster.
Apr 17 - 5:42 PM

The conditioning test free agent ILB Rolando McClain failed for the Ravens Tuesday was an interval sprint.

The Ravens ask players to run 25 yards up and back three times, for a total of 150 yards. They're asked to do this sprint six times and hit target durations, with a one minute break in between intervals. McClain simply couldn't get through it -- and also showed up late for his workout.
Apr 16 - 9:39 AM

Retired ILB Rolando McClain worked out for the Ravens on Tuesday.

That's the good news. The bad news, according to NFL Network and the Baltimore Sun, is that McClain was not only out of shape, but showed up late. McClain just doesn't get it. Although he's still only 24, the odds are against him cracking someone's 53-man roster this season.
Apr 15 - 8:13 PM

Retired ILB Rolando McClain will meet with Ravens GM Ozzie Newsome on Friday.

McClain is meeting with Newsome to "discuss a possible future" in Baltimore, but it's possible he'll be granted his release. The Ravens still own McClain's rights following his abrupt 2013 "retirement." "I’m excited about the game again," McClain said. "I’m excited to play. I’m excited to be around some damn teammates." McClain was a major bust before hanging up his cleats, but is still only 24 years old. He should at least be able to crack someone's offseason roster, perhaps even Baltimore's.
Apr 3 - 11:39 PM

The Carroll County Times reports free agent ILB Rolando McClain has begun informing "people" that he's planning a comeback.

McClain turns 25 in July. The former top-eight overall draft pick spent 2013 out of football to finish his degree at Alabama and get his life back together. McClain could draw some interest as a camp tryout on a one-year, minimum-salary deal. In all likelihood, McClain's money ran out during his year "off."
Mar 10 - 1:29 PM

"Retired" LB Rolando McClain's agent believes he "ultimately" wants to play again.

"He's only 24 years old," McClain's rep said. "He's talented. It's just a shame. It was such a great situation there in Baltimore." The Ravens retain McClain's rights, but would likely release them if he gets serious about returning. It's a long-shot that McClain ever appears in another NFL game.
