NFL suspended Cowboys MLB Rolando McClain four games for violating the league's substance-abuse policy.
McClain was originally believed to be facing a four-game fine, which would have meant three failed tests. A fourth failed test triggers a suspension. McClain simply can't stay out of his own way, though this is his first league-imposed suspension. It would likely be his second had he not "retired" in May 2013. McClain is coming off a renaissance year for the Cowboys, but is recovering from a knee scope in addition to his suspension. The end to his 2014-15 was marred by repeated head issues. McClain turns 26 in July. He's likely one strike away from being out of the NFL. Jul 2 - 2:48 PM

Cowboys MLB Rolando McClain (knee) participated in individual drills during minicamp.

An offseason knee scope forced McClain to miss OTAs, but his limited participation during minicamp suggests he will be ready to go when training camp opens next month. McClain had a career resurgence with the Cowboys last season, recording 87 tackles and two interceptions across 13 games.

Cowboys MLB Rolando McClain underwent an offseason knee scope and isn't participating in OTAs.

Per coach Jason Garrett, McClain is also taking care of some personal business away from OTAs. McClain drew little interest on the free-agent market before re-upping with the Cowboys on a one-year, $3 million pact. We assume he'll be fine for the start of training camp where he'll man the MIKE linebacker spot.
May 27 - 11:47 AM

Cowboys MLB Rolando McClain had his 2013 misdemeanor conviction of resisting arrest and disorderly conduct dismissed.

McClain appealed his conviction related to an incident in which he was accused of cursing at police officers while they were trying to clear a crowd away from a softball game. On Monday, prosecutors asked a judge to dismiss the charges. McClain re-signed a one-year, $3 million deal last month to be Dallas' middle linebacker again this season. His only competition is Jasper Brinkley.
May 5 - 10:25 AM

Cowboys re-signed MLB Rolando McClain to a one-year, $3 million contract.

Another $1 million is available through incentives. McClain, the former No. 8 overall pick and twice-retired 25-year-old, had a big season for the Cowboys in 2014. He graded out as PFF's No. 8 inside linebacker, showing well both against the run and in pass coverage. McClain will man the middle for Dallas this season, allowing Sean Lee to kick outside to the WILL spot.

Free agent ILB Rolando McClain left his Patriots visit without a contract.

The visit was described as "positive." New England was likely just doing its due diligence on McClain while offering near-veteran minimum money. The Cowboys remain interested in bringing back McClain after his standout 2014 season.
Mar 30 - 7:55 PM

Free agent ILB Rolando McClain is visiting the Patriots on Monday.

McClain finally has someone to leverage against the Cowboys, who have been lowballing him since the beginning of free agency. McClain was an integral part of Big D's defense in 2014, but dealt with concussions. He's also facing a four-game fine for violating the league's substance-abuse policy. Although McClain is surely pleased to have another club in the bidding, New England is not the kind of team that's going to break open the bank for a player with his question marks.
Mar 30 - 2:01 PM

The Dallas Morning News' Bob Sturm believes free agent ILB Rolando McClain and the Cowboys have "drastically different" numbers.

The Cowboys organization has been adamant in their desire to re-sign McClain, but they are not going to overpay for a twice-retired linebacker possibly facing a four-game suspension. Based on McClain's extremely quiet free agent market, the rest of the league agrees. McClain needs to lower his asking price if he hopes to find work anytime soon.
Mar 28 - 9:46 AM

Cowboys executive VP Stephen Jones confirms the team is trying to re-sign free agent ILB Rolando McClain.

Jones' comments echo those made by coach Jason Garrett. ESPN Dallas recently guessed that McClain would be allowed to walk, due in part to off-field issues that continue to harass the 25-year-old linebacker. McClain is coming off a renaissance, but concussion-marred, 2014, and is reportedly facing a four-game suspension for violating the league's substance-abuse policy. He's made zero visits in free agency.
Mar 24 - 5:07 PM

ESPN Dallas' Jean-Jacques Taylor sees free agent ILB Rolando McClain as unlikely to return to the Cowboys.

Taylor reports there was "a lot of drama swirling" around McClain at Valley Ranch last year. A series of late-season brain injuries are more cause for concern. ESPN's Adam Schefter reported in February that McClain is facing a four-game fine for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy. Even after a renaissance season of sorts, it appears McClain has worn out his welcome in Dallas.

Free agent ILB Rolando McClain is facing a four-game fine for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy.

A four-game fine is better than a four-game suspension, but will still scare teams away that may have otherwise been interested. McClain also battled a series of brain injuries late in the 2014 season. We suspect he'll end up back with the Cowboys, primarily because they won't have competition for him.
Feb 21 - 2:22 PM

Cowboys MLB Rolando McClain exited Sunday's Divisional Round game with a first-quarter head injury.

He's being evaluated for a concussion. McClain has suffered multiple head injuries in recent weeks. McClain was ruled out for the remainder of the game early in the third quarter.
Jan 11 - 1:29 PM

Cowboys MLB Rolando McClain (concussion) has been cleared to practice Friday and is expected to play in Sunday's Divisional Round game against the Packers.

McClain should be 100 percent, and the Cowboys are going to need him if they're to pull off the upset at Lambeau Field. McClain was Pro Football Focus' No. 8 inside linebacker this season, grading out positively vs. the run and pass.
Jan 9 - 11:53 AM

Cowboys MLB Rolando McClain (concussion) has yet to be cleared to resume practicing.

The same is true of DE Jeremy Mincey (concussion). The Cowboys are going to need all hands on deck if they're to spring an upset on a Packers team that went 8-0 at home this season.
Jan 8 - 4:55 PM

Cowboys MLB Rolando McClain (illness) has been ruled out for the remainder of the Wild Card Round.

McClain has been battling an illness for weeks now. He was also forced out of Dallas' Week 17 win over the Redskins early due to a sickness, which resulted in dehydration. When at 100 percent, McClain has arguably been the Cowboys' highest-impact offseason addition on defense.
