Ex-Giants S/OLB Chad Jones has ended his football comeback attempt and is instead focusing on baseball.
Jones, a 2010 third-round pick by the Giants, had his football career ruined by a car accident that almost cost him his leg. He worked out for the Saints in January. Jones played both baseball and football at LSU, and he topped out at 91 MPH with his fastball. He was a 13th-round selection of the Houston Astros coming out of high school. May 9 - 5:19 PM

Ex-Giants S/LB Chad Jones will work out for the Saints on Wednesday.

Jones has gained clearance in recent months to begin running at full speed and engaging in contact practices after he suffered life-threatening ankle and leg injuries in a 2010 car accident. The former LSU product has never appeared in an NFL game after being a third-round choice of the Giants in 2010.

Ex-Giants S/LB Chad Jones is expected to work out for the Saints in the near future.

Jones has finally been approved for full speed and contact practices after suffering severe injuries to his ankle and leg in a life-threatening 2010 car accident. Jones was a high school star in New Orleans before playing for LSU in college.

Giants waived/failed physical S/LB Chad Jones.

Jones can clear waivers and go on the NFI list, or the Giants could release him to free agency with an injury settlement. Jones just hasn't shown enough coming back from a career-threatening auto accident to justify a roster spot.

Giants S/LB Chad Jones (fractured tibia, fibula) has not received clearance to participate in football activities.

Jones, attempting to return after a severe auto accident that occurred in June of 2010, has hit his first setback. He is not eligible for this weekend's Giants rookie minicamp, and hasn't been cleared for June OTAs, either.

Giants S/LB Chad Jones (fractured tibia, fibula) is participating in offseason workouts this week.

Jones is now rehabbing at the Giants facility after working in New Orleans for two years. This is his first activity with teammates since his serious auto accident in 2010. While it's a good sign that he's sticking to the schedule he laid out early in the offseason, Jones is still awaiting clearance to resume football activities. He's facing long odds to make the final roster this season.

The Giants restructured the contract of S/LB Chad Jones (fractured tibia, fibula), reducing his base salary by roughly $100,000 in each of the next two seasons.

Reducing Jones' salary to a level commensurate with his questionable future is the first tangible sign that the Giants are ready to welcome him back to the field. The New Orleans Times-Picayune confirms that the coaching staff has designs on converting Jones to linebacker this offseason.

Giants S/LB Chad Jones (fractured tibia, fibula) plans to participate in the team's offseason program.

The 76th overall pick in the 2010 draft, Jones is continuing his comeback attempt after a career-threatening automobile accident. His goal is to play in 2012. Jones was videotaped running forty-yard dash times of 4.84 and 4.90 back in April, a tremendous accomplishment. A free safety and baseball pitcher at LSU, Jones may consider playing linebacker if the comeback succeeds.

Giants S/LB Chad Jones (fractured tibia, fibula) has been doing on-field drills in cleats.

A return in 2012 is now looking likely for Jones, who suffered career-threatening injuries in a June 2010 car accident. He's planning on working out in pads next month and then asking the Giants if he should add weight to become a linebacker or shed weight to resume his natural position, safety.

Giants S/LB Chad Jones (fractured tibia, fibula) ran forty times of 4.84 and 4.90 Wednesday and he continues his comeback from a career-threatening auto accident.

"Today was a great day," said Jones, who is spending the season on the reserve/NFI list. "I kind of exceeded what I was going to do in my head." Jones ran a 4.57 coming out of LSU before the 2009 NFL draft. He needed over a dozen leg surgeries after the crash, so his progress remains extremely impressive.

Giants S/LB Chad Jones (fractured tibia, fibula) will be timed in a 40-yard dash Wednesday.

It will be the first 40 Jones has run since the devastating June 2010 car accident that nearly left him without a left leg. Jones is reportedly running 10-yard splits faster than the ones he turned in at his NFL Combine workout, and the "belief" is he should be able to match or exceed his Combine 40 time of 4.57 by the spring. He should at least compete for a roster spot with the Giants next summer, something that didn't seem possible 16 months ago.

Giants S/LB Chad Jones (fractured tibia, fibula) is back running sprints and plans to be clocked in the 40-yard dash in early October.

Jones is on his way back after that scary auto accident he was involved in last summer. He still plans on returning to football, although that's far from guaranteed. Jones will spend this season on the non-football injury list.

Giants waived/injured LB/S Chad Jones.

Jones will clear waivers and be stashed on the non-football injury list for the 2011 season while recovering from over a dozen leg surgeries following a 2010 auto accident. Returning to football is Jones' priority -- possibly as a linebacker -- but the former LSU left-handed pitcher may also consider baseball.

Giants S Chad Jones will consider a return to baseball if the serious injuries sustained in a 2010 auto accident prevent a successful NFL comeback.

Jones has made "amazing" progress over the past year. The former LSU star is still targeting a 2012 return to football activities, but there's no guarantee that his speed will return. As a left-handed pitcher, Jones once possessed a 94 mph fastball. Switching sports would be less taxing on his body, though he'll need the leg drive to sustain that fastball.

Giants S Chad Jones, seriously injured in a 2010 auto accident, hopes to continue his football career as a linebacker by the summer of 2012.

The 2010 third-rounder realizes lost speed will likely force a position switch. Jones has had to learn how to stand, walk, and jog all over again, and he still has a long road ahead just to get back into football shape. After a dozen surgeries -- and more to come -- we have a hard time believing he'll ever play a down in the NFL. Here's hoping he defies the long odds.
