Charges against Lions S Amari Spievey for his role in a child-support dispute are expected to be dropped in June.
Spievey and his girlfriend were arrested and charged with third-degree assault, risk of injury to a child, and disorderly conduct last month. In exchange for the charges being dropped, Spievey is participating in a family violence education program. This should be the last we hear of the issue. He'll compete for a backup safety job in training camp. Apr 11 - 1:22 PM

Lions FS Amari Spievey has been arrested on charges related to a domestic dispute in his hometown of Middletown, Conn.

Spievey has been charged with third-degree assault, risk of injury to a child, and disorderly conduct. His girlfriend was also charged. The couple was reportedly arguing about child support. Spievey re-signed with the Lions on the first day of free agency. He's expected to be Detroit's third safety behind Louis Delmas and Glover Quin. The Lions are "in the process of gathering more information."

Lions re-signed FS Amari Spievey to a one-year contract.

It's not the restricted tender and likely worth just less than the $1.323 million "original pick" tag would have cost. Spievey turns 25 in April. Before a largely lost 2012 season due to concussions, Spievey recorded five picks and 121 tackles in 2010-2011, starting 24 games. Spievey will likely compete for a starting job in training camp. The Lions need to add one more safety.

GM Martin Mayhew says the Lions are taking a "wait-and-see approach" with restricted free agent SS Amari Spievey (concussions).

"He obviously was a good player for us when he was healthy," Mayhew said, "but we'll have to take a wait-and-see approach on that." Mayhew's choice of tense — past — isn't a good sign for Spievey's Lions future. The Lions need to aggressively address their secondary this offseason.

Lions SS Amari Spievey (concussion) expects to be medically cleared heading into the offseason.

Spievey says his post-concussion headaches have finally subsided. Spievey suffered two concussions in 2012, limiting him to just five games. He was sent to injured reserve in early November. A 15-game starter in 2011, Spievey will be a restricted free agent in the offseason. He should re-sign with Detroit.

Lions placed SS Amari Spievey (concussion) on season-ending injured reserve.

Spievey suffered his second concussion of the calendar year in Week 7 against the Bears. Head coach Jim Schwartz noted the following day that the safety would be watched "very closely" from here on out. Erik Coleman will start at strong safety for the remainder of the season. Cornerback Drayton Florence was activated from injured reserve designated for return in a corresponding move. Spievey finishes the season with 21 tackles and will be a restricted free agent in the offseason.

Coach Jim Schwartz expects SS Amari Spievey (concussion) to be watched "very closely" because of the lingering effects from the concussion that knocked him out of the playoffs last year.

Spievey isn't necessarily under the same protocol that Jahvid Best went through, but he's going to have to clear some major hurdles to return. Spievey is up to four concussions in his short NFL career. Consider him sidelined indefinitely.

Lions SS Amari Spievey left Monday night's game against the Bears with a possible concussion and will not return.

Spievey was undergoing concussion testing on the sideline during the third quarter and was then carted to the locker room. He was replaced on defense by Erik Coleman. Spievey entered the game with 13 tackles in four games.

Lions SS Amari Spievey (headaches) returned to training camp practice Sunday.

The Lions can breathe a sigh of relief, as Spievey avoided a concussion after suffering a "serious" one in last year's Wild Card playoff loss. Spievey should be fine going forward. He's favored to start at strong safety in Detroit.

Lions SS Amari Spievey sat out Friday's preseason opener with headaches.

It's concerning news for a player who suffered a serious concussion in Detroit's Wild Card loss, but coach Jim Schwartz doesn't believe the issues are related. "He had been having some headaches a couple days ago and we sent him back to make sure that they weren’t (related to the concussion)," Schwartz said. "And it doesn’t look like they are, but again, anytime we have anything like that we’re going to take a step back and put the breaks on. ... But he should be fine going forward." The Lions are already without FS Louis Delmas (knee surgery).

Lions SS Amari Spievey (concussion) revealed that his head was "killing" him after the first week of the team's off-season conditioning program in April.

"For like a couple months, I had (headaches) constantly, like every day, all day," said Spievey, who had two serious concussions before entering the NFL. Spievey is still taking medication for the headaches, which have just recently slowed down. He is practicing this week as the first-team strong safety.

Lions SS Amari Spievey (concussion) has resumed practicing.

Spievey had been sitting out OTAs due to a concussion he suffered in Detroit's Wild Card loss, but coach Jim Schwartz said last week he expected his strong safety "back on the field pretty quickly." It's a concern whenever a concussion lingers for such a long period, but Spievey will be 100 percent for camp.

Lions SS Amari Spievey is believed to be sitting out OTAs due to aftereffects of a post-season concussion.

The Lions never announced Spievey's injury, but the safety suggested after the playoff game that he was concussed. A 60 Minutes feature confirmed that Spievey played the rest of game after sustaining the concussion in the first half. Coach Jim Schwartz said the team is following "protocol" with Spievey and expects him "back on the field pretty quickly."

The Lions benched SS Amari Spievey in Week 11 for taking bad angles and missing tackles against the Panthers.

Chris Harris, acquired off waivers last month, finished the game as the Lions' strong safety. "It's a little like relief pitchers in baseball," coach Jim Schwartz said. "Sometimes a pitcher doesn't have his best stuff and you have to go to your bullpen. The bullpen was able to bring the win out." It sounds like Spievey will return to the starting lineup on Thanksgiving.
