CSN Bay Area's Matt Maiocco believes it's "very unlikely" contract-year LG Mike Iupati will be back win the 49ers in 2015.
Iupati is probably going to become the highest paid guard in league history next offseason, and the 49ers drafted his heir apparent in fourth-rounder Brandon Thomas. San Francisco, of course, would correspondingly be eligible for a third-round 2016 compensatory pick. The 49ers' left guard could be gone next year, and right guard Alex Boone is expected to hold out of training camp. Jul 16 - 10:16 PM

CSN Bay Area's Matt Maiocco believes the 49ers may have to choose between re-signing RG Alex Boone or LG Mike Iupati.

With Colin Kaepernick headlining a long list of 49ers with soon to expire contracts, San Francisco is in for several tough choices in the coming years. One of those could be to let one or both of their talented guards walk. The Niners prepared to some extent by drafting C/G Marcus Martin and G Brandon Thomas in the third round, but losing even one of Boone or Iupati would be damaging to their perennially dominant line. Iupati is a free agent after this season, while Boone has two years left.

The Sacramento Bee thinks 49ers contract-year LG Mike Iupati could become the highest-paid guard in the league next offseason and may not be re-signed by San Francisco.

The 49ers have set themselves up for life beyond Iupati. They drafted Clemson OG Brandon Thomas and C/G Marcus Martin in the third round earlier this month. Both players had first-round grades. Thomas (torn ACL) will "redshirt" on I.R. Iupati, 27, is in the final year of his rookie deal. The 49ers still need to pay Colin Kaepernick and possibly Michael Crabtree, who are both in the final years of their rookie deals. Iupati, a mauling run blocker, will command $8-9 million annually.

49ers LG Mike Iupati (ankle) is questionable for training camp.

Iupati is still recovering from a broken left ankle he suffered in the NFC Championship game. He hasn't been cleared for OTAs or training camp, but the 49ers expect him to be ready for the start of the season. Iupati is making $2.77 million in the final year of his rookie contract.
Apr 25 - 6:21 PM

49ers LG Mike Iupati has been diagnosed with a broken left fibula.

It's better news than was originally reported. Coach Jim Harbaugh previously said Iupati broke his ankle. The fibula is the smaller of the two bones in the lower leg. Iupati will not require surgery, suffered no ligament damage, and is expected to be back to full strength in eight weeks. He may not do much during spring workouts, but Iupati will be ready in plenty of time for training camp.
Jan 20 - 7:20 PM

49ers LG Mike Iupati has been diagnosed with a fractured left ankle.

It's the worst possible end to a Pro-Bowl season, but barring setbacks, Iupati will likely be ready for training camp. Despite his Hawaii invite, Iupati had a mixed year. In between missing four games with a sprained left MCL, he graded out negatively in Pro Football Focus' ratings. Nevertheless, Iupati is still one of the game's best young all-around blockers. Still only 27 and headed into a contract year, Iupati should bounce back in a big way next season.
Jan 19 - 10:20 PM

49ers LG Mike Iupati was forced from Sunday's NFC Championship Game with a left ankle injury, and will not return.

Iupati appeared to injure his knee, but it was announced as an ankle issue. A Pro Bowler, Iupati got his left leg rolled up at the bottom of a pile near the goal line. It did not look good. Iupati remained down for several moments before being helped to the sideline. He was soon carted to the locker room. Iupati missed four games earlier this season with a sprained left MCL. Veteran Adam Snyder is now in at left guard.

49ers LG Mike Iupati (knee) is active for Week 16 versus the Falcons.

Iupati missed four games with a sprained MCL in his left knee. An already juicy matchup for Frank Gore becomes an even better one.

49ers LG Mike Iupati (knee) has resumed practicing.

Wednesday marked Iupati's first practice since he sprained his left MCL on Nov. 17. He's expected to suit up with a brace on against the Bucs Sunday. It's excellent news for Frank Gore as Iupati has graded out as a top-12 run blocker at the guard spot this season.

49ers LG Mike Iupati has been diagnosed with a sprained left MCL.

Iupati couldn't put any weight on his left leg and was carted to the locker room Sunday against the Saints. He's likely looking at a 2-4 week recovery period and is fully expected to miss next Monday night's game against the Redskins. Iupati's play has dipped a bit this season, according to Pro Football Focus, who has graded him out as the No. 35 guard. Adam Snyder will fill in at left guard during Iupati's absence. Consider Iupati week-to-week.

49ers LG Mike Iupati was forced from San Francisco's Week 11 game against the Saints with a left knee injury, and will not return.

Iupati could put no weight on his left leg as he was helped off the field, and was immediately carted to the locker room. Iupati's play has slipped this season, but it's still a huge blow for the 49ers. Adam Snyder is now in at left guard.

49ers LG Mike Iupati is recovering from shoulder surgery, but is expected to be ready for training camp.

It's unknown when Iupati went under the knife, but he's expected to miss OTAs. Iupati suffered a "stinger" in Week 14 against the Dolphins, and began showing up on the injury report with a shoulder designation thereafter. A first-team All Pro in 2012, Iupati has never missed a game in three seasons, and played 98 percent of the 49ers' offensive snaps last year. The mauling run blocker should be fine for the preseason.

CSN Bay Area confirms the 49ers have had "preliminary" extension talks with LG Mike Iupati, but that no deal is imminent.

Per beat writer Matt Maiocco, there is no timetable on "striking an agreement." The 49ers' mauling left guard is coming off a monster 2012, but is still signed through 2014. Iupati would likely look to top new Titans G Andy Levitre (six years, $46.8 million) in any new deal, and could approach Carl Nicks money (five years, $47.5M).

The San Francisco Chronicle suggests LG Mike Iupati is "next in line" for a contract extension.

Iupati was nothing short of dominant last season, earning first-team All-Pro honors and grading out as Pro Football Focus' No. 5 overall guard. "In scouting, you live for those moments when you find someone that comes out at his position that isn't likely to come out for another five to 10 years," GM Trent Baalke said when asked about Iupati last fall. He's under contract through 2014 and will likely be seeking Andy Levitre kind of money (six years, $46.8M) in an extension.

49ers LG Mike Iupati (stinger) is listed as day-to-day.

Iupati has a short week with the Niners taking on the Chargers Thursday. ESPN's Mike Sando points out that the Niners may hold their impressive rookie out if it's a close call. The Niners have two crucial division games to close out the year.
