Jets G/T Vladimir Ducasse knows he has to compete for a roster spot this summer.
"It's now or never," Ducasse said. "It's pretty much a year for me to do what they drafted me to do." Ducasse, the No. 61 overall pick in 2010, has lost competitions for starting roles in each of his first three seasons, and he's started just one game. The Jets have added five offensive linemen via free agency and the draft, and Ducasse will have to compete for a backup job. May 16 - 2:25 PM

ESPN New York expects Vlad Ducasse to compete for the Jets' starting right guard job.

The Jets haven't addressed their offensive line outside of signing Willie Colon, so they don't have any better in-house options. A former second-round pick, Ducasse is no longer under scholarship with new GM John Idzik and will face heavy competition in camp. The Jets could look to upgrade at guard early in the draft.

Jets OL coach Dave DeGuglielmo said the new platoon of Vlad Ducasse working in with LG Matt Slauson is "a directive from high above me."

Coach Rex Ryan insists the call was his, though speculation is mounting that GM Mike Tannenbaum ordered the coaches to play his 2010 second-round pick. It's clear that DeGuglielmo believes Ducasse belongs on the bench. "He's playing well enough to be an every-third-series guy -- maybe," said DeGuglielmo.

Vladimir Ducasse will not play any tackle this season.

Ducasse has already lost out to Matt Slauson for the left guard job, but he won't kick back outside. The 2010 second-round pick is going to back up both guard spots while Austin Howard operates as the swing tackle.

Jets G/T Vladimir Ducasse admits he's facing a "make-or-break" season.

"That’s how I see it," Ducasse said. "This is my third year, and I put a lot of pressure on myself that I have to do better than last year." Tellingly, Ducasse says his main goal for 2012 is "more playing time." The No. 61 pick of the 2010 draft will need a monster preseason to be anything other than a deep reserve.

ESPN New York believes the additions of Stephon Heyer and Ray Willis say more about the Jets' lack of confidence in former second-round pick Vladimir Ducasse than RT Wayne Hunter.

Ducasse has been moved back to left guard in OTAs, and there is lingering worry that he would be a poor fallback option if Hunter got injured or the Jets benched him. Ducasse has been a total flop as the 61st overall pick in the 2010 draft, so the concern isn't surprising. He should only be a deep reserve this season.

The Jets are using Vladimir Ducasse exclusively at right tackle during offseason workouts.

The Jets want to put pressure on incumbent swinging-gate Wayne Hunter, and former second-round bust Ducasse is his primary competition. The Newark Star-Ledger confirms that 2012 is Ducasse's make or break season with New York. It's his third year in the league, and Ducasse struggled mightily in his first two.

ESPN New York expects the Jets to give OT Vladimir Ducasse "every opportunity" to win the team's starting right tackle job.

Incumbent Wayne Hunter was a nightmare last season, allowing a team-high 8.5 sacks while committing a club-most 11 penalties. Ducasse has even been more of a headache when on the field, if that's possible. If the Jets don't add a tackle in the draft or free agency, they'll have to decide between the lesser of two evils in Ducasse and Hunter at right tackle.

ESPN New York's Rich Cimini suggests the Jets' decision to guarantee RT Wayne Hunter's 2012 base salary reflects poorly on former second-round pick Vladimir Ducasse.

The Jets probably would have released Hunter, freeing up $2.45 million, if they believed Ducasse could provide an upgrade. Hunter was horrible in 2011, allowing a team-high 8.5 sacks and committing a club-most 11 penalties. The 61st overall pick in the 2010 draft, Ducasse is quickly shaping up as a bust.

Jets OT Vladimir Ducasse had two false starts and a holding penalty called against him in Thursday's preseason finale.

"Clearly disappointing," coach Rex Ryan said. Despite impressive physical skills and athleticism, the light has yet to go on for Ducasse. He allowed two sacks in the preseason opener as well and will serve a backup role behind Wayne Hunter at right tackle this season.

Jets ILB Bart Scott is predicting a breakout season for second-year RT Vladimir Ducasse.

"Vlad Ducasse is ripped up right now," Scott said. "I’ve watched Vlad on the inclines with almost 400 lbs and he’s worked off all that baby fat. All gone. He’s working ridiculous. He’s lean. He’s 345 lbs. If I can say a lean 345, he’s a lean 345." Ducasse entered the league raw coming from D-IAA UMass. He'll compete for the Jets' starting right tackle job in camp.

No player on the Jets team has been more affected by the lockout than Vladimir Ducasse, who had been penciled in at right tackle.

Last year's second-rounder has never played right tackle, and he spent his rookie season glued to the bench. The Jets were already taking a leaping faith before the lockout wiped out the offseason program. It's now believed that free agent Damien Woody (Achilles) will be re-signed as stopgap solution.

ESPN New York confirms that the Jets plan to move Vladimir Ducasse into the starting lineup at right tackle.

The coaching staff is taking quite the leap of faith in having Ducasse replace Damien Woody. The former UMass star is learning a new position after struggling to pick up the playbook as a rookie. Ducasse has plenty of ability, but the Jets will want to re-sign swing tackle Wayne Hunter as insurance.

Jets 2010 second-round pick Vlad Ducasse admits his rookie-year struggles were due mostly to an inability to learn the playbook.

We can't say we're surprised. Ducasse scored an exceptionally low 13 on the Wonderlic at the 2010 Combine, and was shuttled between three positions in his first season. The former UMass left tackle is now expected to focus on playing right tackle, where he could be the replacement for outgoing Damien Woody.

The Jets are slated to move OT Vladimir Ducasse to the right side this season.

Ducasse spent his rookie year striking out in a left guard competition and then watching D'Brickashaw Ferguson dominate at left tackle. Now it looks like the Jets may want him to be Damien Woody's eventual replacement. Ducasse will have to show a ton in the offseason to unseat Woody, but he has the incumbent's age (33) and salary ($4.26 million) going for him.
