Cardinals OLB O'Brien Schofield will undergo surgery to repair a torn ligament in his left ankle.

Coach Ken Whisenhunt confirmed that he's out for the season. Schofield will be placed on injured reserve with one more season left on his rookie contract. He's still likely to return as the bookend starter opposite Sam Acho next season. Quentin Groves will fill in for the final two months.

Cardinals OLB O'Brien Schofield (ankle) is out for the remainder of the season.

Schofield was injured in Sunday's loss to the Packers. Coach Ken Whisenhunt confirmed Tuesday that he will undergo surgery to repair a ligament tear. The 25-year-old recorded 34 tackles and four sacks in his first season as a starter. Quentin Groves will likely take over as the left outside linebacker.

Cardinals OLB O'Brien Schofield is undergoing an MRI on his ankle.

That, of course, suggests Schofield could be dealing with a high-ankle sprain, but official word may not come until Tuesday or Wednesday. A full-time starter for the first time in his career, Schofield has four sacks in nine games, but has graded out as one Pro Football Focus' poorer 3-4 outside linebackers.

Cardinals defensive coordinator Ray Horton is really impressed with OLB O'Brien Schofield's mental progress this offseason.

Schofield struggled to pick up the defensive system last season. "This year, he's been probably my best player as far as mentally, which shows you the growth you can make if you apply yourself. And he's been phenomenal for us," said Horton. He's worth a roster stash in deep big-play IDP leagues.

O'Brien Schofield will be the Cardinals' starting left outside linebacker, with Sam Acho entrenched on the right side.

Schofield is replacing Clark Haggans and should be a pass-rushing upgrade, bringing superior edge-bending ability and speed rushing off the edge. Schofield racked up 4.5 sacks off the bench in 2011, and believes he will hit double digits as a full-time player. He will be worth a look in big-play IDP leagues.

Cardinals OLB O'Brien Schofield underwent surgery on both shoulders early in the offseason.

Schofield had the labrum and rotator cuff in his left shoulder repaired and a routine cleanup on his right shoulder. Running as a first-time starter at left outside linebacker, Schofield is now healthy and participating in OTAs. The 2010 fourth-rounder played all 16 games last season after recovering from ACL surgery during his senior season.

O'Brien Schofield is penciled in as the starter opposite ROLB Sam Acho.

The Cardinals are intrigued by new addition Quentin Groves and are expected to move ILB Stewart Bradley outside in some packages, but Schofield is the new starter after tallying five sacks and six QB pressures in a situational role in 2011. Last year's starter, Clark Haggans, could still be re-signed as a backup.

Cardinals OLB O'Brien Schofield is entering his first full offseason after missing 2010 with a knee injury and 2011 due to the lockout.

Schofield blew out his left ACL and meniscus at the Senior Bowl two years ago. He's not only two seasons removed from the injury, but is entering his first offseason as a third-year player. Schofield was used as a situational pass rusher in 2011, recording 37 tackles, 4.5 sacks, and two forced fumbles. The Cards will hope he emerges as a starter in 2012 to book end Sam Acho.

Cardinals LBs coach Matt Raich believes OLB O'Brien Schofield is "starting to get it."

Schofield has been brought along slowly this season, struggling in pass coverage and run support while picking up new DC Ray Horton's scheme slowly. With consecutive sacks on counter moves in the fourth quarter last week, Schofield has earned a rotational role opposite promising rookie Sam Acho. Arizona's young defense has turned the corner over the past six weeks.

Cardinals DC Ray Horton plans to increase OLB O'Brien Schofield's snaps on defense going forward.

"We need to generate some pressure," said Horton, whose defense ranks 26th against the pass. Schofield's increased involvement is expected to come at the expense of Joey Porter, who has just one of Arizona's ten sacks. To this point, the 2010 fourth-round pick Schofield has averaged only about 12 snaps per game.

Cardinals OLB O'Brien Schofield hasn't made a push for a starting job so far in training camp.

Schofield flashed promise in the second half of last year, but he's coming along slowly in August. Coach Ken Whisenhunt pointed to "assignment errors," and Schofield even worked behind rookie Sam Acho in Wednesday's practice. The Cards appear poised to start Joey Porter and Clark Haggans at outside linebacker to open the season, which is good news for the rest of the NFC West.

The Cardinals want to get OLB O'Brien Schofield on the field more in 2011, according to Len Pasquarelli.

If Joey Porter ends up being released, Schofield is going to have a big chance. The 2010 fourth-rounder had two sacks in 10 games last year and will be almost two years removed from an ACL tear by the time the season rolls around. Schofield has upside as an edge rusher.

Darren Urban of the Cardinals' official website suggests O'Brien Schofield will indeed have the opportunity to "unseat" Joey Porter as a starter.

The Cardinals have decide how quickly they want to begin the youth movement at linebacker. Like veteran ILB Gerald Hayes, OLB Porter is a candidate for release at $5.75 million for 2011. Will Davis, coming off a fractured fibula, will push Clark Haggans on the other side while rookie Quan Sturdivant will attempt the same with Paris Lenon on the inside. There could be a lot of turnover here after training camp wraps up.

The Arizona Republic's Kent Somers calls 2010 fourth-round pick O'Brien Schofield a "wild card" for the Cardinals and potential building block on defense.

Schofield made a highly impressive recovery from a torn left ACL in the January 2010 Senior Bowl to be activated immediately from PUP in Week 7. He racked up 12 tackles and two sacks in 10 appearances, also forcing a fumble. Now over a full year removed from the reconstructive surgery, Schofield is a prime candidate to replace Joey Porter at weak outside linebacker.
