Charles Brown is expected to get the first crack at the Saints' left tackle job.
Brown, a second-round pick in 2010, has spent the majority of his first three NFL seasons in the trainer's room. He's now facing an all-out competition with free agent acquisition Jason Smith and third-round pick Terron Armstead to replace Jermon Bushrod. Coach Sean Payton said the left tackle position keeps him up at night.

After losing Jermon Bushrod to the Bears in free agency, the Saints have a gaping hole on Drew Brees' blind side. Payton has repeatedly said he isn't sold on oft-injured Charles Brown, who has battled knee, back and hip woes during his three NFL seasons. Perhaps they'll try to trade up in the draft and nab Oklahoma's Lane Johnson, the consensus third-best tackle available.

The Saints are not sold on Charles Brown being the team's starting left tackle in 2013.

"I look at that spot (on the depth chart) like there's a magnet with no name on it," Payton said. Brown, a 2010 second-round pick, has been unable to stay on the field in his three years, finishing two seasons on injured reserve. "He has to be available," added Payton. "Year after year if you're unable to (stay on the field), then it becomes as a coach do we have him, do we not have him."

Saints placed OT Charles Brown (knee) on season-ending injured reserve.

Brown, in his third season out of USC, started three games at right tackle in Weeks 9-11 in place of Zach Strief. William Robinson will now act as New Orleans' swing tackle for the remainder of the season. Brown will enter the final year of his rookie deal in 2013.

Brown is in the starting lineup with Zach Strief out with an injury. Undrafted rookie Bryce Harris is now lining up at right tackle for New Orleans.

The Saints will start third-year OT Charles Brown at right tackle in Week 10.

The 64th pick in the 2010 draft, Brown was beat out for the job in training camp by Zach Strief. Strief will miss Sunday's game against the Falcons with a groin injury. Brown, 25, started five games last season and struggled some, but didn't embarrass himself. This will be a big opportunity for him.

Saints OT Charles Brown (hip flexor) has resumed practicing.

Brown started five games in place of RT Zach Strief before missing the final eight games with the hip injury. If he can finally shake the string of injuries, Brown will likely push Strief for the starting job.

It's a tough blow for Brown, who shined as the Saints' fill-in starter at right tackle with Zach Strief nursing an injury of his own. Coach Sean Payton revealed that Brown injured his hip flexor and will require surgery. He's been injury prone through two seasons, but should maintain a roster spot in 2012.

Saints RT Charles Brown was forced from Sunday's game against the Rams late in the third quarter with a knee injury, and did not return.

He was replaced by Pat McQuistan. Brown remained down on the field for several moments, but did not appear to suffer a severe injury. He'll likely be questionable for Week 9.

Saints activated OT Charles Brown (back) from the active/PUP list.

Brown underwent surgery to repair a herniated disc in his back last January, and the Saints weren't going to rush him back after re-signing Jermon Bushrod for $9.5 million over two seasons. The 24-year-old Brown might be New Orleans' left tackle of the future, but he'll have to wait. And stay healthy.

Saints OT Charles Brown revealed this week that he underwent surgery on his back to repair a herniated disc two weeks after the 2010 season ended.

Rehabbing at USC during the lockout, Brown was cleared to begin running two weeks ago. The 2010 second-rounder expects to be 100 percent by the start of training camp. There's a chance he could end up in the starting lineup if the Saints are unsuccessful in re-signing free agent Jermon Bushrod.

The Saints are not expected to turn to 2010 second-round pick Charles Brown as a starter in 2011.

Brown is still building up strength, and beat writer Jeff Duncan anticipates another year before he's viewed as a viable starting left tackle. It's tentatively expected that incumbent LT Jermon Bushrod's free agency will be restricted, making him easy to retain. Bushrod remains the favorite to start.

Saints GM Mickey Loomis said OT Charles Brown has "got a good future with us" even though the 2010 second-rounder was inactive for most of the season.

According to Loomis, the Saints liked what they saw out of Brown. After playing in the first two games, Brown was a healthy scratch for most of the season and the Wild Card loss to the Seahawks. The athletic USC product is a candidate for a much bigger role in 2011 if left tackle Jermon Bushrod is allowed to walk as a free agent.

Saints signed rookie OT Charles Brown, the No. 64 overall pick, to a four-year contract.

Brown, whose draft stock fell due to some injury red flags, is now believed to be 100 percent and has been mentioned as a candidate to take over at left tackle if Jermon Bushrod doesn't show improvement early in the season. Highly athletic, Brown figures to be an immediate success in pass protection.
