Jets released OT Charles Brown.

A 2010 second rounder, Brown made 14 starts for the Saints in 2013, but couldn't get on the field for the Giants last season.

Jets signed OT Charles Brown.

A second-round pick in the 2010 draft, Brown has been ineffective whenever given chances at significant playing time. He spent part of 2014 with the Giants. Brown will compete for a roster spot as a swing tackle in New York.

Giants waived OT Charles Brown.

A second-round pick by the Saints in 2010, Brown struggled in his first opportunity as a starter with New Orleans last season, and was essentially a swinging gate in his first action with the Giants Week 11 against the 49ers. Brown could get some looks because of his draft pedigree, but he is not an NFL-quality tackle.

Speaking Thursday, Giants GM Jerry Reese said Charles Brown would be the next man up at left tackle if Will Beatty (leg) isn't ready for Week 1.

In other words, the G-Men want to keep Justin Pugh at right tackle. Beatty is reportedly "ahead of schedule" in his rehab, but remains questionable for Week 1. Brown was a major flop on Drew Brees' blindside in New Orleans last year.

Giants signed OT Charles Brown, formerly of the Saints.

A 2010 second-rounder, Brown was a flop as Drew Brees' blindside protector last season, struggling mightily before finally being benched in Week 15. He was a serviceable reserve in 2012, however, and is still only 27 (later this month). Brown isn't a bad flier for a team remaking its offensive line, but won't be in the mix for a starting job.

Free agent OT Charles Brown will visit the Giants.

Brown can play both left and right tackle and has 22 career starts under his belt, with 14 of those coming in 2013. He gave up seven sacks and 33 hurries as the Saints left tackle in 2013 and was benched in Week 15 after getting lit up by Rams RE Robert Quinn. Brown would likely be the swing man in New York.

Free agent OT Charles Brown is not expected back with the Saints.

Brown finally stayed healthy in 2013, but lost his job to rookie Terron Armstead down the stretch. Brown wound up grading 66th among 76 qualifiers in Pro Football Focus' offensive tackle ratings. The 2010 second-round pick likely won't draw interest as a starter, but Brown could resurface as a swing tackle.

Saints LT Charles Brown was benched during the third quarter of Sunday's Week 15 loss at St. Louis.

Brown was getting humiliated by Rams rising start Robert Quinn. "I saw enough," coach Sean Payton said. "I saw enough, period. It was enough penalties, pressures, sacks. It was enough. At some point you can't just keep watching it. Feelings get hurt, it is tough." Zach Strief moved to the left side and Bryce Harris was inserted at right tackle. It's a messy situation heading into another tough matchup at Carolina in Week 16.

Coach Sean Payton confirmed that Charles Brown has sewn up the starting left tackle job.

Once the pads went on, Brown ran away from athletic rookie Terron Armstead and former No. 2 overall pick Jason Smith. Although he's made just eight career starts, the Saints feel comfortable with Brown on Drew Brees' blind side. "That's one of those positions where no news is usually good news," Payton said. "He's been real consistent."

Charles Brown has reportedly "locked up" the Saints' left tackle job.

Injury riddled to this point in his career, 2010 second-rounder Brown has an excellent opportunity in his contract year. He's reportedly been "especially sharp" in team drills, holding off rookie Terron Armstead. Armstead will be Brown's primary backup. Jason Smith is in danger of being left off the final 53.

Charles Brown has taken the first-team left tackle reps in each of the last two OTA practices.

As expected, Brown is getting the first crack at the job vacated by Jermon Bushrod. Free agent pickup Jason Smith and third-round rookie Terron Armstead have been working with the backups. Brown's ability to be effective and stay on the field is one of the Saints' major storylines this season. Thanks in large part to constant injuries, he has just eight career starts under his belt.

Saints LT Charles Brown (undisclosed) did not participate in OTAs this week.

Brown suffered a "little injury while weightlifting." He was working on the sidelines with a trainer on Thursday, and coach Sean Payton stressed the injury is "nothing significant." Brown is expected to get the first crack at the starting left tackle spot, but Jason Smith worked with the ones in his absence.

Charles Brown is expected to get the first crack at the Saints' left tackle job.

Brown, a second-round pick in 2010, has spent the majority of his first three NFL seasons in the trainer's room. He's now facing an all-out competition with free agent acquisition Jason Smith and third-round pick Terron Armstead to replace Jermon Bushrod. "It's definitely time for me to step up and prove myself and prove that I can protect Drew back there," Brown said. It's an area of concern for the Saints.

Coach Sean Payton said the left tackle position keeps him up at night.

After losing Jermon Bushrod to the Bears in free agency, the Saints have a gaping hole on Drew Brees' blind side. Payton has repeatedly said he isn't sold on oft-injured Charles Brown, who has battled knee, back and hip woes during his three NFL seasons. Perhaps they'll try to trade up in the draft and nab Oklahoma's Lane Johnson, the consensus third-best tackle available.
