New Cardinals ILB Sean Weatherspoon (Achilles') has been fully cleared.
Injuries have limited Weatherspoon to seven games over the past two seasons. "I just have to get back to practicing a little bit more and being on that steady routine," he said. "But I definitely think it saved my legs being off of them for the past two years." 'Spoon has been a difference-maker when healthy, but the Cards can't count on a full slate of games from the 2010 first-rounder. Mar 17 - 10:25 PM

Cardinals agreed to terms with ILB Sean Weatherspoon to a one-year contract worth just below $4 million.

When healthy, Weatherspoon is a versatile and difference-making linebacker that was arguably the top player available at his position in free agency. The problem has always been durability, as he's played just one full NFL season and is coming off an Achilles' tendon rupture. The Cardinals will hope Weatherspoon makes a full recovery and is able to stabilize their 3-4 inside linebacker spot made shaky by Daryl Washington's off-field issues and Larry Foote's retirement. The Falcons could look to replace Spoon with free agent Malcom Smith, who played for new head coach Dan Quinn in Seattle.

A source with knowledge of the situation tells Profootballtalk's Mike Florio free agent LB Sean Weatherspoon will sign with either the Cardinals or the Saints.

Arizona was considered the favorite for Weatherspoon on Saturday. They have competition from New Orleans, which has placed MLB Curtis Lofton on the trade block and may soon release WLB David Hawthorne. Coming off a torn Achilles' tendon, Weatherspoon will be a boom-or-bust free agent investment.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports free agent LB Sean Weatherspoon is unlikely to re-sign with the Falcons.

Atlanta has been adamant in its desire to re-sign Weatherspoon, but he looks poised to test the market. Weatherspoon missed all of 2014 after tearing his Achilles' last June. A first-round pick of the Falcons in 2010, Weatherspoon has played only one full season in his career and has played just seven games the last two seasons. Weatherspoon is reportedly leaning toward the Cardinals.

Falcons coach Dan Quinn confirmed the team wants to re-sign free agent LB Sean Weatherspoon.

"Definitely someone that we're talking to," Quinn said. "We're certainly hoping that he can be a big part moving forward." Falcons GM Thomas Dimitroff said earlier this month that he intends to bring back Weatherspoon. Eight months removed from Achilles surgery, Weatherspoon should be open to returning on a team-friendly deal.

Falcons GM Thomas Dimitroff hopes to re-sign free agent LB Sean Weatherspoon.

Weatherspoon is recovering from a torn Achilles' he suffered last June. "Sean Weatherspoon is going to be an important part of building this defense and building this team," Dimitroff said. "He’s a guy that’s really, really focused on his rehab. We need him back in this organization to help us go to another level." Re-signing with Atlanta may be Weatherspoon's best bet, as he'll likely be greeted by crickets on the open market. Injuries have limited Weatherspoon to just 20 of a possible 48 games over the past three seasons. Wherever he signs, his injury history dictates that he be counted on more as a bonus than clear starter.
Feb 3 - 7:33 PM

Falcons placed LB Sean Weatherspoon on injured reserve with a torn Achilles' tendon, ending his season.

Weatherspoon ruptured the Achilles' during an early-June OTA practice. The loss is massive for an Atlanta defense that was already hanging by a thread, and will now turn to some combination of Joplo Bartu and rookie Prince Shembo next to Paul Worrilow at inside linebacker. Weatherspoon turns 27 this December. He'll hit 2015 agency in rehab, and as a significant injury risk.

Falcons LB Sean Weatherspoon suffered a ruptured Achilles' tendon on Tuesday, and is out for the season.

Weatherspoon suffered the injury as he rehabbed the knee ailment that hobbled him in 2013. He'll undergo surgery in the "near future." It's a crippling blow for a defense that was ravaged by injury and a lack of depth last season. GM Thomas Dimitroff added only band-aids in the draft and free agency. The Falcons have no good options to replace their starting weak-side linebacker. Fourth-rounder Prince Shembo could be forced into heavy snaps. Going into the final year of his rookie contract, Weatherspoon will now enter free agency as an injury-prone 27 year old. The Falcons are going to be in weekly shootouts, much like the Jason Garrett-era Cowboys.

Falcons WLB Sean Weatherspoon (knee) will be sidelined until training camp.

Weatherspoon missed the final two games of last season with a knee issue. He didn't need offseason surgery, but the Falcons are going to take it easy with him. Just last month, Weatherspoon said he was at 80 percent. Weatherspoon could be asked to play inside 'backer if the Falcons switch to the 3-4.

Falcons WLB Sean Weatherspoon is still rehabbing a knee injury.

Weatherspoon appeared in just seven games last season, starting the year on injured reserve with a designation to return (foot) and ending it by sitting out the last two weeks (knee). The good news is he didn't need surgery. Weatherspoon should be fine to run with the starters on the weak side by training camp.

Falcons WLB Sean Weatherspoon missed 11 tackles out of 47 opportunities last season.

Weatherspoon ranked No. 39 out of 40 qualifying players in tackle efficiency at Pro Football Focus. While his 2013 numbers represent a small sample size, Weatherspoon has finished in the bottom 25 percent of 4-3 outside linebackers in tackle efficiency in each of his four seasons as a pro.

Sean Weatherspoon (knee) and Jacquizz Rodgers (concussion) are inactive for Sunday's Week 17 finale against the Panthers.

Weatherspoon's disappointing fourth NFL season ends with just 38 tackles in seven games played as he battled both foot and knee woes. He needs to get healthy and regain effectiveness on the weak side if the Falcons defense is going to have any shot at a turnaround in 2014. The rest of Atlanta's inactives: S Sean Baker, DT Adam Replogle, OT Terren Jones, G Garrett Reynolds and OT Sean Locklear.

Falcons WLB Sean Weatherspoon (knee) is inactive for Monday night's Week 16 games against the 49ers.

Weatherspoon didn't practice at all this week. Stephen Nicholas and Joplo Bartu will start at outside linebacker for Atlanta, with Paul Worrilow manning the middle. Also inactive for the Falcons are WR Darius Johnson (ankle), RB Josh Vaughan, S Zeke Motta, OL Terren Jones, OL Sean Locklear, DL Travian Robertson.

Falcons activated WLB Sean Weatherspoon (foot) from injured reserve/designated to return.

Coach Mike Smith announced on Monday that Weatherspoon will be ready to roll for Wednesday's practice. 'Spoon will presumably start Sunday's game against the Bucs, though it's possible he'll be on a snap count. Weatherspoon last played in Week 2.

Falcons WLB Sean Weatherspoon (foot, I.R./recall) will be activated for Week 11.

Coach Mike Smith expects Weatherspoon to be activated "within the next 48 hours." He'll participate in Wednesday's practice. Although he's been sidelined since Week 2, it's quite possible Weatherspoon will be in the starting lineup against the Bucs.
