Cardinals ILB Sean Weatherspoon was a healthy scratch Week 5 against the Lions.

He was active last week against the Rams but did not play a snap. Weatherspoon was brought in this offseason to be a starting inside linebacker, but he missed most of training camp with a hamstring injury and has not played more than 18 snaps in a game so far this season. With Kevin Minter playing well ahead of him, Weatherspoon is unlikely to get a starting role anytime soon.

Cardinals ILB Sean Weatherspoon recorded three tackles in his preseason debut.

He played into the second half. Weatherspoon missed all of 2014 with an Achilles injury and sat out the first three preseason games with a hamstring injury. He made several stops in the running game and held up Kapri Bibbs so a teammate could strip the ball in the first quarter, though the play was eventually called back on review. If he can stay healthy, Weatherspoon will be a big addition to the Cardinals' defense, but staying healthy has always been the problem.

Cardinals ILB Sean Weatherspoon is expected to play in the fourth preseason game.

It will be Weatherspoon's debut with the Cardinals and first game action since Week 15 of 2013. A standout when healthy, Arizona needs Weatherspoon to be a rock in their otherwise underwhelming linebacking corps. Weatherspoon has played all 16 games just once in his five-year career.

Cardinals ILB Sean Weatherspoon (hamstring) has resumed practicing.

He'll play in Thursday's preseason finale after missing the first three exhibition contests. The Cardinals need Weatherspoon to play important snaps this season, but he has one of the longest injury histories in football. His odds of making it 16 games are slim.

Cardinals ILB Sean Weatherspoon (hamstring) is expected to miss the third preseason game.

Weatherspoon pulled his hamstring on the first day of camp and has not practiced since. "I need to see a lot, haven’t seen anything yet," said annoyed coach Bruce Arians. "That’s very discouraging right now, to not know where he’s at as a football player, having missed most of last year and all of this camp." The Cardinals do not have enough talent at linebacker for Arians to seriously consider benching Weatherspoon, but the beginning of his Cardinals career could not have gone much worse.

Cardinals ILB Sean Weatherspoon suffered a setback with his injured hamstring.

"Looks like it’s going to be another week," coach Bruce Arians said. Weatherspoon pulled the hamstring on the first day of camp and has not gotten in a full day of practice since. Weatherspoon has missed 28 games the last three seasons including all of 2014 with a ruptured Achilles'.

New Cardinals ILB Sean Weatherspoon (Achilles') has been fully cleared.

Injuries have limited Weatherspoon to seven games over the past two seasons. "I just have to get back to practicing a little bit more and being on that steady routine," he said. "But I definitely think it saved my legs being off of them for the past two years." 'Spoon has been a difference-maker when healthy, but the Cards can't count on a full slate of games from the 2010 first-rounder.

Cardinals agreed to terms with ILB Sean Weatherspoon to a one-year contract worth just below $4 million.

When healthy, Weatherspoon is a versatile and difference-making linebacker that was arguably the top player available at his position in free agency. The problem has always been durability, as he's played just one full NFL season and is coming off an Achilles' tendon rupture. The Cardinals will hope Weatherspoon makes a full recovery and is able to stabilize their 3-4 inside linebacker spot made shaky by Daryl Washington's off-field issues and Larry Foote's retirement. The Falcons could look to replace Spoon with free agent Malcom Smith, who played for new head coach Dan Quinn in Seattle.

A source with knowledge of the situation tells Profootballtalk's Mike Florio free agent LB Sean Weatherspoon will sign with either the Cardinals or the Saints.

Arizona was considered the favorite for Weatherspoon on Saturday. They have competition from New Orleans, which has placed MLB Curtis Lofton on the trade block and may soon release WLB David Hawthorne. Coming off a torn Achilles' tendon, Weatherspoon will be a boom-or-bust free agent investment.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports free agent LB Sean Weatherspoon is unlikely to re-sign with the Falcons.

Atlanta has been adamant in its desire to re-sign Weatherspoon, but he looks poised to test the market. Weatherspoon missed all of 2014 after tearing his Achilles' last June. A first-round pick of the Falcons in 2010, Weatherspoon has played only one full season in his career and has played just seven games the last two seasons. Weatherspoon is reportedly leaning toward the Cardinals.

Falcons coach Dan Quinn confirmed the team wants to re-sign free agent LB Sean Weatherspoon.

"Definitely someone that we're talking to," Quinn said. "We're certainly hoping that he can be a big part moving forward." Falcons GM Thomas Dimitroff said earlier this month that he intends to bring back Weatherspoon. Eight months removed from Achilles surgery, Weatherspoon should be open to returning on a team-friendly deal.

Falcons GM Thomas Dimitroff hopes to re-sign free agent LB Sean Weatherspoon.

Weatherspoon is recovering from a torn Achilles' he suffered last June. "Sean Weatherspoon is going to be an important part of building this defense and building this team," Dimitroff said. "He’s a guy that’s really, really focused on his rehab. We need him back in this organization to help us go to another level." Re-signing with Atlanta may be Weatherspoon's best bet, as he'll likely be greeted by crickets on the open market. Injuries have limited Weatherspoon to just 20 of a possible 48 games over the past three seasons. Wherever he signs, his injury history dictates that he be counted on more as a bonus than clear starter.

Falcons placed LB Sean Weatherspoon on injured reserve with a torn Achilles' tendon, ending his season.

Weatherspoon ruptured the Achilles' during an early-June OTA practice. The loss is massive for an Atlanta defense that was already hanging by a thread, and will now turn to some combination of Joplo Bartu and rookie Prince Shembo next to Paul Worrilow at inside linebacker. Weatherspoon turns 27 this December. He'll hit 2015 agency in rehab, and as a significant injury risk.

Falcons LB Sean Weatherspoon suffered a ruptured Achilles' tendon on Tuesday, and is out for the season.

Weatherspoon suffered the injury as he rehabbed the knee ailment that hobbled him in 2013. He'll undergo surgery in the "near future." It's a crippling blow for a defense that was ravaged by injury and a lack of depth last season. GM Thomas Dimitroff added only band-aids in the draft and free agency. The Falcons have no good options to replace their starting weak-side linebacker. Fourth-rounder Prince Shembo could be forced into heavy snaps. Going into the final year of his rookie contract, Weatherspoon will now enter free agency as an injury-prone 27 year old. The Falcons are going to be in weekly shootouts, much like the Jason Garrett-era Cowboys.
