Patriots signed QB Mike Kafka and DE Marcus Benard to a reserve/future contracts.
Kafka, 25, is a West Coast-style quarterback with a weak arm but smarts and solid accuracy. He'll head into the offseason hoping to secure the Patriots' No. 3 quarterback job, although New England often doesn't keep three signal callers on its 53-man roster. Benard led the Browns in sacks (7.5) in 2010, but has been a non-factor since. He can play both linebacker and end. Jan 4 - 6:16 PM

Patriots worked out free agent QB Mike Kafka on Tuesday.

Free agent RB Lex Hilliard was also among those working out in New England on Tuesday. The Pats are in the market for a third quarterback after releasing Brian Hoyer. Kafka is better suited to a No. 3 role after flunking out as Michael Vick's backup.

Although several teams were reportedly interested in former Eagles QB Mike Kafka after his Friday release, he passed through waivers unclaimed.

It now seems clear that Kafka's agent was the source for the report that the Chiefs, Patriots, Packers, and Browns all had interest in the 2010 fourth-round pick. Kafka, like Brian Hoyer, figures to latch on with a team as a backup before or just after the season starts. They're both unrestricted free agents.

PhillyMag.com reports the Chiefs, Patriots, Packers and Browns have all shown interest in former Eagles QB Mike Kafka.

It doesn't sound like the 2010 fourth-round pick is going to make it through waivers unclaimed. We should know his new home by this evening.

Eagles waived QB Mike Kafka.

The Eagles briefly shopped Kafka after naming Trent Edwards their No. 3 quarterback, but quickly found he had no market. A 2010 fourth-round pick, Kafka created some buzz after a successful quarter of play in place of Mike Vick in Week 2 last season, but followed it up with a calamitous Week 3 performance. Kafka has severe arm-strength limitations, but will likely find a No. 3 job.

The Eagles are shopping QB Mike Kafka on the trade market.

Nick Foles' impressive preseason has relegated Kafka to unneeded status. He almost certainly won't attract any real interest on the trade market thanks to a woefully weak arm and the history of Eagles backup quarterbacks in other systems. A.J. Feeley and Kevin Kolb both proved to be overrated by opposing organizations. The Eagles could roll with Trent Edwards as their third-stringer, making Kafka a candidate for release.

Eagles backup QB Mike Kafka (hand) has resumed practicing.

Kafka's reps were limited, and it's not clear if he will see action in the preseason finale. Second on the depth chart when he suffered the injury on Aug. 11, Kafka could now be the odd man out on the 53-man roster. Nick Foles and Trent Edwards have both shown well in exhibition game action.

Eagles backup QB Mike Kafka (hand) could return for the preseason finale.

With third-round rookie Nick Foles impressing, Kafka is under the gun to get healthy. It's almost certainly too little, too late. Foles is much better equipped to run the Eagles' offense than Kafka.

Eagles backup QB Mike Kafka has a broken left (non-throwing) hand, and will be sidelined a minimum of three weeks.

He'll miss the rest of the preseason. In theory, it creates an opening for veteran Trent Edwards, but rookie Nick Foles will serve as the No. 2 quarterback in Kafka's absence. Missing valuable exhibition reps certainly doesn't help Kafka's cause, but the Eagles would have to be extremely down on his future to give his roster spot to Edwards. It's possible Kafka will fall behind Foles on the depth chart for good, however.

Mike Kafka's lack of arm strength "would be an issue" if he had to play extended time, according to ESPN's Dan Graziano.

Kafka has the backup job sewn up, but it wouldn't be a smooth transition if Michael Vick got hurt. The 2010 fourth-round pick out of Northwestern is more of a dink-and-dunker, lacking the ability to get the ball deep to DeSean Jackson or Jeremy Maclin. We wouldn't bother "handcuffing" Vick with Kafka.

According to the Philadelphia Inquirer, QB Mike Kafka has the Eagles' No. 2 job "locked up."

Beat writer Jeff McLane expects Kafka to hold off Trent Edwards "barring some unforeseen event." Rookie Nick Foles will be the Eagles' third-stringer.

Mike Kafka worked ahead of Trent Edwards as the Eagles' second-string quarterback during this week's OTAs.

Sporting a stronger arm after hitting the weight room hard this offseason, Kafka is making throws "which he didn't come close to making in his first two years," according to Eagles insider Adam Caplan. Kafka is clearly in the driver's seat to be Michael Vick's primary backup this season.

The Philadelphia Daily News expects Eagles QB Mike Kafka to beat out Trent Edwards for a roster spot.

With No. 88 pick Nick Foles locked in as the Eagles' third quarterback, Kafka and Edwards are competing to be Michael Vick's backup. The Daily News believes Edwards was brought in to push Kafka more than truly compete with him, however. It would take an unexpectedly strong camp from Edwards coupled with a disappointing showing from Kafka to shake things up.

Mike Kafka and Trent Edwards are expected to compete for a roster spot after the Eagles used their third-round pick on QB Nick Foles.

Whoever wins the competition should be Michael Vick's primary backup, but whoever loses is likely to be sent packing as Foles develops in the No. 3 spot. With two years in the Eagles' system, Kafka is the heavy favorite to beat out the perennially disappointing Edwards.

Mike Kafka will reportedly enter training camp as the Eagles' No. 2 quarterback with Trent Edwards third on the depth chart.

It's a nod toward Kafka's two years of experience in Andy Reid's offense. We're still not convinced the Eagles are done shopping at quarterback with the one of the biggest injury risks in the league as the starter.
