The Vikings have moved Joe Webb to wide receiver.
"We had been talking about it for a while, and we made the decision that this was the way to go after we had our draft," coach Leslie Frazier said. Webb hasn't lined up at receiver since rookie minicamp in 2010, but he's been catching passes on the side for a few weeks now. Webb posted forty times of 4.44 and 4.45, an 11-foot-5 broad jump, and 42.5" vertical at UAB's Pro Day three years ago. He also has 10 3/4-inch hands to go with his 6-foot-4, 220-pound frame. Webb has a chance to be the No. 4 or 5 receiver if the transition goes smoothly. May 15 - 11:02 PM

Joe Webb has been catching passes in preparation for a switch to receiver.

The Vikings haven't notified Webb of a position switch, but it's looking likely that he'll be asked to make the transition back to receiver in 2013. "I'm doing a lot more work at it so I can work on my craft at receiver since I haven't been there since, what, 2010 when I first got drafted?," asked Webb rhetorically. "I'm comfortable. Whatever they ask me to do, I'm going to do it." Webb has one year left on his contract, and his best chance to make the team will be at receiver.

Coach Leslie Frazier softened his stance and said the Vikings will "continue to discuss" a position change for QB Joe Webb.

"[Webb] is such a talented athlete that we want to make sure that we’re doing the right thing by him and our team," Frazier said. "That’s something we’ll continue to discuss as we go forward." Frazier previously said the Vikings didn't plan to move Webb from quarterback, but they appear more open to doing so. Minnesota intended to use Webb as a receiver when it selected him in the 2010 draft.

Coach Leslie Frazier said he doesn't intend to change QB Joe Webb's position.

Frazier claims he intends to take four quarterbacks to training camp. However, Webb does not appear to be a fit -- even as the No. 3 behind Christian Ponder and Matt Cassel. Webb proved to be incapable of running a standard offense when forced into action during January's Wild Card playoff loss to the Packers.

Beat writer Tom Pelissero says there's a "good chance" the Vikings move on from Joe Webb this offseason.

Webb's style doesn't mesh with starter Christian Ponder. When Webb was forced to start January's Wild Card playoff game against the Packers, the entire offense crumbled at his fingertips. He's simply incapable of running a traditional scheme. Pelissero expects the Vikings to reach out to free agent backups such as Tyler Thigpen, Matt Moore or Bruce Gradkowski next week.

Vikings coach Leslie Frazier says backup QB Joe Webb will face competition in 2013.

Frazier also reiterated the Vikings have no plans to sign or draft a quarterback to push Christian Ponder. The Vikings' backup quarterback the past three seasons, Webb was out of his depth after being put on the spot in the Wild Card round. Webb's athleticism is intriguing in a league that's becoming obsessed with the read option, but it's not guaranteed he'll hold onto No. 2 duties in Minnesota.

ESPN 1500 Twin Cities suggests the Vikings may shop Joe Webb this offseason to a team that runs a read-option offense.

In Webb's lone quarterback appearance of 2012 -- the Wild Card playoff loss to Green Bay -- he moved the offense in the read-option before OC Bill Musgrave inexplicably used a traditional look the rest of the way. 2013 is a contract year for Webb, so this offseason would be Minnesota's last opportunity to get something for him via trade. He might bring back a seventh-round pick.

Vikings GM Rick Spielman still likes Joe Webb as the No. 2 quarterback and won't hold his bad Wild Card performance versus the Packers against him.

"Joe has been a very good backup quarterback. I'm sure, as everybody has seen, that he probably didn't play the way he wanted to play up in Green Bay. But if you look into his history, Joe has done a very good job for us in that backup situation," said Spielman. Minnesota is fully expected to bring in some quarterback competition this offseason.
Jan 20 - 9:02 AM

Joe Webb completed 11-of-30 passes for 180 yards, one touchdown, and an interception as the Vikings were trounced by the Packers 24-10 in Saturday night's Wild Card Round game.

He did rush seven times for 68 yards, but committed a second turnover on a fumble and simply couldn't move the offense. Webb made NFL history on Saturday night, becoming the first quarterback ever to start a playoff game without throwing a single regular season pass. He also showed precisely why that never happens. Webb had 33 pass drops. They resulted in 19 incompletions, 11 completions, and three sacks taken in a performance that will really hurt Webb's chances of returning as Christian Ponder's primary backup in 2013. It'll be a contract year for the athletic, if inaccurate and ultimately overmatched Webb.
Jan 5 - 11:07 PM

Dan Wiederer of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune reports Joe Webb is "looking more likely" than Christian Ponder (elbow) to start Saturday night's Wild Card game against the Packers.

It's become apparent Saturday that Ponder's elbow bursitis didn't improve despite essentially taking the entire practice week off. The Vikings simply can't afford to start a quarterback with an injured throwing arm in sub-freezing weather. Wiederer concedes there's still "no final word," but one will come down by halftime of today's Bengals-Texans game. Vikings-Packers has an 8PM ET start, so inactives will be available no later than 7ET.
Jan 5 - 3:59 PM

According to ESPN 1500 Twin Cities, "no one who matters at Winter Park" believes backup Joe Webb has a chance to be the long-term solution at quarterback.

There's no chance that Webb will be given a look in the short-term, either, as the move would crush Christian Ponder's confidence and raise questions about his future. "We have (made changes) and we're hoping for immediate results," OC Bill Musgrave said of his struggling passing attack. "We really are. This has been a good process for us to go through as coaches and players because we all take accountability."

Coach Leslie Frazier clarified this week that Joe Webb will not push Christian Ponder for the starting job this summer.

Frazier suggested the opposite immediately after the season when Webb flashed while filling in for an injured Ponder. "If something were to happen to Christian because of injury, we feel like we have a capable backup in Joe," Frazier said Thursday. "But there's no competition as to, 'Joe has to do this to beat out Christian.' Christian, it's his job."

Joe Webb confirmed that he is focusing exclusively on playing quarterback this offseason.

Webb was a Wildcat/receiver/quarterback in his first two seasons, but the Vikings want him to be Christian Ponder's clipboard holder and to push Ponder in camp. "Any time you can concentrate on one position, that's always a positive," Webb said. Look for Webb to open the season as Ponder's primary backup.

Coach Leslie Frazier indicated that Joe Webb will be used exclusively at quarterback going forward.

Webb will move away from "special packages," wide receiver, and special teams to concentrate on quarterback after impressing in spot duty last season. He will enter the season second on the depth chart, with the possibility of pushing Christian Ponder in the event of a prolonged slump.

Coming on in relief of an injured Christian Ponder, Joe Webb completed 17-of-32 passes for 200 yards and two interceptions against Bears in Week 17

Of Webb's three relief appearances in the past month, this was easily his least effective as both a passer and a runner. All told, the dual threat showed enough to enter the 2012 as a "slash" threat as well as fallback option in case Christian Ponder slumps as a sophomore. Webb should be owned in all but the shallowest Dynasty leagues entering the offseason.
