Jets OLB Jermaine Cunningham suffered a torn Achilles' tendon in Saturday night's scrimmage and is out for the year.

The Jets were hoping for sub-package contributions from versatile Cunningham at end and linebacker, so this is a blow to their pass-rush depth. It also makes the Jason Babin signing look more savvy. Expect Quinton Coples, Calvin Pace, and Babin to be New York's primary edge-rushing trio this season.

Jets OLB Jermaine Cunningham worked with the starting nickel defense at OTAs.

With Antwan Barnes (knee) questionable for training camp, Cunningham is getting an extended look as a sub-package pass rusher. He saw brief action in two games with the Jets at the end of last year and could push for a third-down role behind Quinton Coples. Sixth-round DE/OLB IK Enemkpali and seventh-rounder Trevor Reilly are also competing for roster spots.

The New York Post mentioned OLB Jermaine Cunningham as a player that stood out at Jets OTAs.

Cunningham re-upped with the Jets on a one-year, minimum-salary deal back in January after originally signing on with Gang Green in November. He saw limited action down the stretch but is still young (26 in April). The former Patriots second-rounder reportedly looked fast around the edge in the non-contact practices. With Calvin Pace entering his age-34 season and Quinton Coples frustrating the Jets, Cunningham could carve out a role in 2014.
May 30 - 12:38 PM

Jets re-signed DE/OLB Jermaine Cunningham to a one-year, $730,000 contract.

Cunningham was scheduled to hit unrestricted free agency in March. The former second-round pick of the Patriots in 2010 appeared in one game for the Jets last season, failing to record a tackle. Cunningham will be on the roster bubble if he lasts with the team into training camp.

Jets signed OLB Jermaine Cunningham.

A second-round pick of the Patriots in 2010, Cunningham was waived by the 49ers at the end of October. If active for the Jets, he'll be depth as a sub-package pass-rusher.

49ers signed DE/OLB Jermaine Cunningham.

The Patriots released Cunningham with an injury settlement early last month. Cunningham appeared in 12 games for the Pats last season, making three starts. He's notched 59 career tackles and 3.5 sacks. He's a nice piece of depth for the 49ers' undermanned front seven in the absence of Aldon Smith.

Patriots waived/injured DE Jermaine Cunningham.

He was the 53rd overall pick in the 2010 draft. Cunningham served primarily as an interior sub-package rusher with New England. He'll likely spend 2013 on injured reserve and can be a free agent in 2014.

The Boston Globe believes Patriots DL Jermaine Cunningham "looks like a goner."

In other words, Cunningham isn't expected to make the team. The Patriots have a plethora of young, cheap defensive linemen, and Cunningham's mostly been a non-factor in his three seasons with the club. He has 3.5 career sacks.

NFL suspended Patriots DE Jermaine Cunningham four games for violating the league's policy on performance-enhancing drugs.

He'll be eligible to return in Week 17. A sub-package rusher who plays inside and out, Cunningham amassed 23 tackles and 2.5 sacks in the Patriots' first 11 games, making three starts. The Pats can withstand his loss if they get rookie RE Chandler Jones back healthy. Trevor Scott can take Cunningham's role.

ESPN Boston gives DE Jermaine Cunningham a 35-percent chance of making the Patriots' 53-man roster.

Cunningham has disappointed (one career sack) since New England selected him in the second round of the 2010 draft, but coach Bill Belichick recently tagged him with a "great offseason". Already competing with Trevor Scott, Chandler Jones, and Jake Bequette for reps, the expected re-signing of Andre Carter could still push Cunningham further down the depth chart.

Coach Bill Belichick indicated that 2010 second-round OLB Jermaine Cunningham has "really worked hard," resulting in a "great offseason."

Asked to describe the offseason improvement, Belichick replied, "A player's physical improvement, overall mental grasp of what we're doing and what we can see on the field which is non-contact but reactions and technique." It sounds like the light may finally be going on for Cunningham, who was the odd man out in the Pats' 4-3 tinkering last season.
