The Broncos are interested in bringing back released defensive tackles Jamal Williams and Justin Bannan.
"I don't think there's any question that those are guys that we have on our radar as potential guys to fill those roles," said defensive coordinator Dennis Allen. The Broncos have only Kevin Vickerson and Marcus Thomas up front, so they may be the most aggressive pursuer of defensive tackles once free agency finally kicks off. Sun, May 15, 2011 01:24:00 PM

Broncos released DTs Jamal Williams and Justin Bannan.

The veteran pair was imported last year to fix the run defense in Wink Martindale's 3-4 scheme. That obviously didn't work, and with the move to John Fox's 4-3 defense, it didn't make sense to keep a nose tackle and a five-technique at bloated salaries. Williams was due a $1 million bonus on the third day of league year to go with his $4.2 million salary. Bannan was due a $500,000 bonus two days later in addition to his $3.5 million salary. The moves will make defensive tackle a higher priority in the draft at No. 2 overall.

Broncos coach John Fox sounded "less than enthusiastic" when discussing the team's defensive tackles at the Combine Thursday.

Meanwhile, Fox twice mentioned RE Elvis Dumervil's "17 sacks" in 2009, and said he has the "utmost confidence" in LE Robert Ayers' ability. CBS Sports draft analyst Rob Rang takes all this to mean Fox might be more tempted to target defensive tackles in the draft than defensive ends like Da'Quan Bowers. Fox is going to strongly consider Nick Fairley and Marcell Dareus.

Broncos NT Jamal Williams (triceps) was activated from the camp/PUP list on Thursday and resumed practicing.

Assuming Williams has as much left as the Broncos believe, he won't have trouble passing Ronald Fields to start on Opening Day. "Only" 34 years old, Williams has not yet reached the over-the-hill age mark for nose tackles.

Broncos placed NT Jamal Williams (triceps) on the active/PUP list.

The Denver Post isn't sure if it was the remnants of Williams' triceps injury from last year, a new ailment, or simply conditioning that has the nose tackle unable to perform this week. Williams can be activated at anytime, and coach Josh McDaniels suggested the absence isn't long-term.

Coach Josh McDaniels' confirmed that NT Jamal Williams is fully recovered from last year's torn triceps injury.

Williams passed his physical in Denver, so this comes as no surprise. "He came in in great shape. He weighed in at 334 on the visit," McDaniels said. "He was in a great frame of mind."

Broncos signed NT Jamal Williams, formerly of the Chargers, to a three-year, $16 million contract with $7 million guaranteed.

Josh McDaniels' defense is taking its cue from George Allen's "Over-the-Hill Gang" of the early '70s. Denver set out to beef up both lines, and they've succeeded beyond their expectations on the defensive side. Williams joins versatile veterans Justin Bannan and Jarvis Green up front, providing a massive upgrade to the run defense -- at least on paper. Expect Williams to start at the nose, with Bannan at one end and Green at the other.

NFL Network's Mike Lombardi reports that free agent NT Jamal Williams is already in Denver on Monday to take a physical.

Williams has a meeting with the Saints lined up for later in the week, but the Broncos may not let him make it that far. The 34-year-old is close to Denver line coach Wayne Nunnelly from their time together in San Diego.

In addition to Leonard Little, the Saints will host NT Jamal Williams and DE James Hall for free agent visits this week.

After losing Scott Fujita, the Saints are finally able to sign a single free agent per the "Final Eight" rule. Williams, 34 in April, has played in a 3-4 scheme for his entire career. Saints defensive coordinator Gregg Williams runs a 4-3.

According to the Denver Post, "word is" the Chargers fully intend to re-sign NT Jamal Williams despite releasing him Thursday afternoon.

Denver looked like a possible landing spot if Williams was going to test the market due to the presence of ex-Chargers DL coach Wayne Nunnelly. The Chargers, though, are expected to retain Williams for a lesser salary than the $5 million he was due. Williams likely has something left, so it appears to be a smart and cost-effective move by Bolts GM A.J. Smith.

Chargers released NT Jamal Williams.

The sides are expected to continue to talk, so Williams could be back depending on the market for his services. Turning 34 this offseason, he was due a $1M roster bonus on top of a $5M salary in the final year of his contract. He'll be a health risk on the free agent market after missing most of the 2009 season with a torn triceps. With Darren Sproles now in his pocket, GM A.J. Smith can target a nose tackle in the first round.

According to beat writer Kevin Acee, Chargers NT Jamal Williams could be on the roster bubble this offseason.

Williams is due $6 million in the final year of his contract. He'll likely survive the offseason, but 2010 will be his last year in San Diego. This year's draft is especially deep in nose tackles, so GM A.J. Smith will likely target Williams' replacement.

Chargers NT Jamal Williams is at the end of his rehab from a torn triceps muscle, according to beat writer Kevin Acee.

Williams suffered the injury in Week 1, and San Diego's run defense never recovered. He turns 34 this spring and is due $5M in salary, but the Bolts are likely to bring him back. They don't have legitimate in-house alternatives, and the free agent market won't exactly be crawling with 3-4 nose tackles.

Chargers NT Jamal Williams (injured reserve), who underwent triceps surgery Wednesday, says he is intent on continuing his football career.

The Bolts will have a big decision to make on the 33-year-old, who is slated for a $5 million salary in 2010. They'll likely consider drafting a new nose early in next year's draft. Backup Ogemdi Nwagbuo isn't the long-term answer.

Chargers placed NT Jamal Williams (triceps) on injured reserve, ending his season.

A stunning and devastating surprise, especially since Williams was listed as questionable this week. Knee injuries and his age (33) have slowed the three-time Pro Bowler down, but the Chargers still count on Williams heavily for run defense; there isn't a more important player on their defense. The only other defensive tackle on their roster right now is Ogemdi Nwagbuo.
