The Charlotte Observer believes the signing of KR/WR Ted Ginn "could spell the end" of Armanti Edwards' time with the Panthers.
Edwards should have been released a year ago, but former GM Marty Hurney couldn't pull the trigger on one of his many draft blunders. Edwards had his "best" season in 2012, but has never been a reliable play-maker since being the No. 89 pick of the 2010 draft. He'll likely be cut loose in short order. Mar 22 - 10:00 AM

Panthers WR Armanti Edwards (groin) is listed as questionable on the Week 11 injury report.

Edwards was downgraded from probable on Saturday, which doesn't bode well for his chances of playing in the Panthers' Week 11 divisional game against the Bucs. Edwards saw minimal action for most of the season, but did play 17 snaps in last week's loss to the Broncos. He has three catches for 103 yards on the season, and is well off the fantasy radar.

Armanti Edwards could be in danger of losing his roster spot in Carolina when David Gettis (hamstring, PUP) returns for Week 9.

Edwards, the former Appalachian State quarterback turned NFL receiver, is one of now former GM Marty Hurney's many high-risk mistakes. Hurney traded a 2011 second-round pick to New England, which ended up being the No. 33 pick overall, for the right to select Edwards in the third round of the 2010 NFL Draft. Edwards has one catch for 12 yards in his career and has also failed in the return game. The fact that he's even stuck around this long is a surprise.

Coach Ron Rivera singled out WR/KR Armanti Edwards for having "an outstanding camp."

It looks like Edwards took the selection of fellow WR/KR Joe Adams as motivation. Still, he remains squarely on the roster bubble while battling with Louis Murphy and Seyi Ajirotutu for reps.

Including returns, none of Panthers WR/PR Armanti Edwards' 39 career touches have gone for longer than 17 yards.

It's why Joe Adams' selection has surely ended Edwards' time as the Panthers' return specialist, and why the Charlotte Observer's Scott Fowler and Joseph Person both expect Edwards to lose his roster spot. Edwards is just two years removed from being the No. 89 overall pick, but has shown so little that he might have trouble latching on elsewhere if he's indeed released.

The Charlotte Observer believes the Panthers' selection of WR/PR Joe Adams with the No. 104 pick could "spell the end of" WR Armanti Edwards’ time in Carolina.

Edwards has been a massive bust since being a third-round pick in 2010, notching zero catches while averaging an absurdly poor 5.2 yards on 34 punt returns. Adams should, and likely will, push Edwards off the roster.

Coach Ron Rivera singled out second-year WR Armanti Edwards as an early star in training camp.

"What we're getting from Armanti Edwards has been outstanding," said River, "and it's been a reflection of the way he worked." Edwards was active for just three games as a rookie, failing to record a reception. Barring injury, he won't enter the season higher than fourth on the depth chart.

Panthers GM Marty Hurney still expects 2009 third-round WR Armanti Edwards to be a "very good player" in the NFL.

Hunley essentially forfeited this year's No. 33 overall pick to reach for Edwards at No. 89 last year. After Edwards failed to contribute as a rookie, Hurney could be trying to save himself from the hot seat. By the end of the week, his future could be directly tied to Edwards and Cam Newton.

The Charlotte Observer's Darin Gantt expects the Panthers to give Armanti Edwards a look in the slot next season.

That would be quite a step up for Edwards, who was active for three games as a rookie, notching zero catches. A bust of a third-round pick to date, Edwards would be a dubious selection in any round of 2011 fantasy drafts.

John Fox concedes that the Panthers likely blew it by trading a 2011 second-round pick for the right to draft Armanti Edwards last April.

"You don’t know what that player’s going to develop into. Time will tell," said Fox. "But it doesn’t look very good at this point." The Patriots wound up with the No. 33 pick in this year's draft, a selection considered "gold" because of the layover from the first to second round. Edwards, who wound up costing Carolina both last year's No. 89 pick and this year's 33rd, had almost as many fumbles as games played in his rookie season.

Coach Ron Rivera wants new offensive coordinator Rob Chudzinski to use Armanti Edwards like he used Josh Cribbs in Cleveland a few years ago.

Edwards played just three games as a rookie after struggling to field punts and run routes in training camp. Rivera envisions him as an explosive returner on both kickoffs and punts, an occasional receiver, and a threat out of the backfield. Edwards has his work cut out for him this offseason.

Panthers declared WR Armanti Edwards, third QB Keith Null, C Chris Morris, DT Corvey Irvin, CB R.J. Stanford, CB Chris Gamble, S Gerald Alexander inactive for Week 15.

The Panthers have just seven inactives because they're carrying just 52 players on their roster. Chris Gamble was listed as probable but was limited in practice throughout the week.

Armanti Edwards said the Panthers had drawn up a couple plays for him in "Mountaineer" package in Week 13, but they never got around to using them.

Edwards was active Sunday for just the second time this season, but he didn't play a single snap. He's yet to catch a pass this year and has one rush for seven yards. Edwards has admitted he didn't come to camp in good enough shape to be an NFL receiver, but he's still surprised he hasn't played more. The former college quarterback has a long way to go.

Panthers declared third QB Armanti Edwards, QB Brian St. Pierre, G Travelle Wharton, S Marcus Hudson, S Jordan Pugh, RB Tyrell Sutton, DT Andre Neblett and LB Abdul Hodge inactive for Sunday's game against the Browns.

Tony Pike will back up Jimmy Clausen, who returns from a concussion. Keith Null stays on the practice squad. At running back, Jonathan Stewart (concussion) is back to share the load with Mike Goodson.

Panthers coach John Fox said WR Armanti Edwards is improving and that him not playing in games is "not by design; it's just by the league rules on the numbers that you're allowed."

That's an interesting way of putting it. Given the state the Panthers' receiving corps has been in this season, if Edwards was close to being ready to contribute, he'd have been active on game days. The former college quarterback has been active for just one game this year due to his lack of familiarity with a pro-style scheme.
