Alterraun Verner (hamstring) is expected to make his preseason debut on Saturday against the Bills.
Verner missed the Bucs' first two exhibition contests after injuring his hamstring on the third day of camp. The Bucs have had no reason to rush their new No. 1 corner. Verner's status isn't a concern for Week 1. Aug 18 - 4:30 PM

Buccaneers agreed to terms with CB Alterraun Verner on a four-year, $26.5 million contract with $14 million guaranteed.

It's a bargain price all things considered, and make the Packers' four-year, $39 million deal with Sam Shields look like a severe overpay. Still only 25, Verner was long underappreciated in Tennessee before his 2013 breakout season, shutting down right corner and intercepting five passes. He's considered a superior fit to Darrelle Revis in Lovie Smith and Leslie Frazier's preferred Cover 2. Verner also comes at well under half the price of Revis.

Free agent CB Alterraun Verner believes the Patriots are "definitely a possibility."

Verner says he's been being lobbied by Patriots FS Devin McCourty. That's all good and well, but we doubt McCourty carries anything resembling clout in the Patriots' personnel decisions. Shelling out a lucrative, long-term deal to the market's top corner wouldn't be Bill Belichick's style. Regardless of whether the Pats are interested, Verner is going to have a robust market.
Mar 10 - 2:59 PM

In addition to the Jets, Rams, Giants, Redskins, and Vikings, free agent CB Alterraun Verner has drawn interest from the Steelers and Lions.

The Steelers probably aren't a likely landing spot due to their salary cap constraints. The Lions could make it work, but signing Verner would likely be accompanied by LCB Chris Houston's release. While there's no question Verner has a red-hot free agent market, Detroit and Pittsburgh both seem like long-shot landing spots. Verner is going to command $10 million-plus per year.
Mar 9 - 2:25 PM

The NY Daily News reports free agent CB Alterraun Verner "isn't planning any visits," and intends to sign with a team "shortly after the market opens" on Tuesday.

It's possible he already has a deal in place with a team. The Redskins, Giants, Rams, Jets, and Vikings are among the clubs known to have interest in Verner. Verner had to love seeing the Packers give Sam Shields $39 million over four seasons on Saturday. Verner is younger than Shields, and a superior corner.
Mar 9 - 2:12 PM

The Giants have "inquired" about free agent CB Alterraun Verner.

Verner's market is red hot as of late Saturday, and his price tag rose when the Packers unexpectedly handed Sam Shields a deal worth $9.75 million per year. Verner is going to command more than that. The Giants look to be actively trying to upgrade their defense in free agency, also pursuing DL Arthur Jones.
Mar 8 - 11:02 PM

The New York Post reports the Jets are among the teams interested in free agent CB Alterraun Verner.

It confirms the Jets are still fully expected to release Antonio Cromartie and could look to replace him if he's not open to reworking his contract. Verner has also drawn interest from the Vikings and Rams since the NFL's negotiating window opened on Saturday.
Mar 8 - 5:20 PM

ESPN 1500 Twin Cities reports the Vikings are showing interest in free agent CB Alterraun Verner.

Verner played under DB coach Jerry Gray in Tennessee the last three seasons, so the dots certainly connect. The Vikings also had one of the worst pass defenses in the league last year and have yet to re-sign Chris Cook. Verner is a top-two free-agent corner and could command $10 million annually. Minnesota has roughly $41 million in 2014 cap space.
Mar 8 - 3:39 PM

The Titans haven't had any recent talks regarding a contract extension for free agent CB Alterraun Verner.

It confirms that Verner will be allowed to reach the open market, as expected. A top-two free-agent corner, Verner could approach $10 million annually.
Mar 7 - 7:37 PM

Free agent CB Alterraun Verner didn't sound as if he is particularly open to giving the Titans a hometown discount.

"I love being here, I love my teammates and I love Tennessee. When it comes to the money, it is not like I need to be paid super high," Verner said. "From a business standpoint, you don’t know how long you are going to play in this league, so you have to take advantage when you can." Verner is going to be paid handsomely as a top-two free-agent corner, and signs have pointed to the Titans moving on. Verner is just 25 and could approach $10 million annually.
Mar 3 - 8:55 PM

The Nashville Tennessean reports the Titans "aren't close" to a deal with free agent Alterraun Verner.

The Titans failed to apply the franchise tag by Monday's deadline, meaning there's now nothing standing between Verner and the open market. Still only 25, Verner is one of the top two corners available after Brent Grimes re-signed with the Dolphins. He's going to get a fat contract.
Mar 3 - 4:33 PM

The Nashville Tennessean reports there's been "no real progress" between the Titans and free agent Alterraun Verner.

The Tennessean reported last week that Verner "could prove to be too expensive" for the Titans coming off his breakout season. The Titans apparently don't consider the $11.2 million franchise tag an option with LCB Jason McCourty set to earn $6.5 million in 2014. Only 25 years old, Verner is the No. 11 overall player in Evan Silva's Free Agent Top 150.
Feb 27 - 1:48 PM

The Nashville Tennessean reports the Titans remain interested in re-signing Alterraun Verner, but that he "could prove to be too expensive."

Verner is committed to testing the market, and the Titans reportedly have "no plans" to use the franchise tag. That means he'll go to the highest bidder, and Tennessee apparently has little interest in being the highest bidder. Verner had a breakout season in 2013, and will draw major free agent interest.
Feb 20 - 10:58 PM

The player rep for free agent CB Alterraun Verner will meet with the Titans during the Combine.

The Titans are hoping to get a deal done before March 11, but that might not be possible. Verner would be wise to test the market and max out as he comes off a career season that saw him grade out as a top-12 corner per PFF. The Titans are not expected to use the $11.2 million franchise tag on Verner as they've already committed $6.5 million to Jason McCourty in 2014. The Rams and Vikings could show interest here.
Feb 20 - 12:47 PM

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch "would be surprised" if the Rams didn't make an effort to sign free agent CB Alterraun Verner.

The dots easily connect. Coach Jeff Fisher drafted Verner in Tennessee, and new DC Gregg Williams was on the Titans' staff for Verner's career year in 2013. Williams even mentioned Verner at his introductory press conference with the Rams. However, at some point, the Titans-to-Rams big-money-free-agent pipeline needs to stop. The Rams whiffed on CB Cortland Finnegan and last offseason's signing of Jared Cook left much to be desired. Verner would probably fare better than both, but the Rams need to start seeing some production from draft picks like CBs Janoris Jenkins and Trumaine Johnson.
