Bucs re-signed C Joe Hawley to a two-year contract.
Hawley has been the Bucs' center the past two seasons. He held up in pass protection last year, but finished near the bottom of PFF's run-blocking grades. The Bucs decision to bring back Hawley means Evan Smith will remain in a swing role. Wed, Mar 15, 2017 04:30:00 PM

Bucs GM Jason Licht said he wants to re-sign free agent C Joe Hawley.

"He’s been the glue in the offensive line room," Licht said. "He’s a great leader and very tough, obviously. He’s one that we have been talking with, and if it makes sense we’d love to have him back." Hawley had a solid year in 2016 but isn’t a huge priority. Evan Smith would be the Bucs' best in-house replacement, although Smith has been a disappointment in Tampa.

Buccaneers C Joe Hawley left Thursday's Week 9 game against the Falcons with a left knee injury and is questionable to return.

He went down in the second quarter. Evan Smith will assume center duties with Hawley sidelined.

Bucs C Joe Hawley exited Week 5 against the Panthers with a left knee injury, but later returned to the game.

Hawley was able to walk off under his own power in the third quarter. He did some weight-bearing tests on the knee on the sideline and appeared to be relieved before heading to the locker room. Hawley tore his right ACL in 2014.

Bucs C Joe Hawley has the early edge to start over Evan Smith.

Hawley outplayed Smith in Tampa's preseason opener. He graded near the bottom of PFF's 2015 ratings in 14 starts, but has reportedly had a strong training camp. With the addition of J.R. Sweezy and Ali Marpet entering his second year, the Bucs are counting on improved interior line play this season.

Bucs signed C Joe Hawley.

Hawley visited the Bucs last week and played under OC Dirk Koetter in Atlanta. Hawley will not push Evan Smith for snaps at center, but he will offer solid depth at guard for a team which needs it.

Free agent C Joe Hawley is visiting the Bucs on Wednesday.

Hawley knows OC Dirk Koetter from their time together in Atlanta. Evan Smith is the Bucs' No. 1 center and is coming off a strong run-blocking season. Hawley can also play guard and would be quality depth for a line that lacks it.

Falcons released C Joe Hawley.

Hawley was the presumed starter at the pivot, but ran with the backups in the final two preseason games. Hawley was a replacement-level player before tearing his ACL and MCL last season. He's apparently regressed since the injury. Monday waiver claim Gino Gradkowski could be the favorite to start, but James Stone is also in the mix.

Falcons C Joe Hawley (knee surgery) expects to be ready for training camp.

Hawley tore his right ACL in Week 4. He's an average center, but has a nasty attitude that helps set the tone up front for the Falcons. At 6-foot-3 and 302 pounds, Hawley should have the athleticism to fit OC Kyle Shanahan's offense.

Falcons placed C Joe Hawley on injured reserve with a knee injury, ending his season.

Hawley tore his right ACL in Sunday's loss to the Vikings. RT Lamar Holmes (foot) is also done for the season. Although neither player could be considered a true asset, it's a brutal blow for a team getting ravaged by injury for the second-consecutive season. As evidenced on Hard Knocks, Hawley was at least adept at setting the tone. The Falcons will now be forced to turn to 2012 draft bust Peter Konz in the middle. Still only 26 (in October), Hawley is under contract for 2015. He'll face competition.

Falcons C Joe Hawley (knee) is considered "unlikely" for Week 5.

The Falcons are still awaiting Hawley's MRI results. A long-term injury would be devastating for a Falcons' offensive line that relies on Hawley's toughness in the middle.

Falcons C Joe Hawley was carted off the field with an apparent left knee injury in Sunday's Week 4 game against the Vikings.

He's the third Atlanta offensive lineman to leave the game in this one; LG Justin Blalock and RT Lamar Holmes were hurt earlier. RG Peter Konz is now moving to center. The Falcons' offensive line is a serious mess.

Joe Hawley remains the favorite for the Falcons' starting center job.

Hawley is competing with Peter Konz, but is fully expected to be the Week 1 starter. He was given a two-year extension in March and is set to make $2 million in base salary. Hawley finished as a top-20 run blocking center by Pro Football Focus last year, but struggled in pass protection.

Joe Hawley and Peter Konz will battle it out to be the Falcons' starting center.

Hawley has the upper hand. The Falcons invested $3 million guaranteed in Hawley this offseason, and he dramatically outplayed Konz after taking over for him midway through 2013. Konz will be a reserve interior lineman for Atlanta.

Falcons re-signed C Joe Hawley to a two-year, $6.5 million contract.

The deal includes $3 million guaranteed. Hawley was a priority for Atlanta after starting the final seven games of 2013. He replaced a struggling Peter Konz at center. Although Hawley was a (major) upgrade on Konz, he was still only the No. 20 center in Pro Football Focus' ratings. Expect the two to wage a camp battle, with Jon Asamoah and Justin Blalock holding down the fort at guard.
