Lions re-signed restricted free agent OT Jason Fox to a one-year, $1.323 million contract.
He was tendered at the original-round level. Fox is expected to be in the mix for the Lions' right tackle job, but injuries have limited the 2010 fourth-round pick to just five appearances in three years. He needs to stay healthy before the Lions lean on him for a significant role. Apr 15 - 8:51 AM

Lions extended an original-pick tender to restricted free agent OT Jason Fox.

Fox was a fourth-round pick in 2010, so he won't be going anywhere. Fox is expected to compete with Corey Hilliard and possibly others for the starting right tackle job in Detroit. GM Martin Mayhew recently said the Lions think Fox has "starter-type talent level."

Lions GM Martin Mayhew considers restricted free agent OT Jason Fox a "leading candidate" to start in 2013.

"Obviously he's had injuries in his first couple seasons," Mayhew said. "We think he has a starter-type talent level. He has the size. He's strong enough. Good technician." Fox will compete with Riley Reiff to replace free agent Gosder Cherilus, who at this point seems as good as gone. Unlike Fox, Reiff is also a candidate to replace Stephen Peterman at right guard.

Lions coach Jim Schwartz hints OT Jason Fox's roster spot could be in danger.

Foot and knee injuries have limited Fox to four games in two seasons, and he sat out last week's minicamp with knee soreness. "It's not just ability, it's availability," Schwartz said. "He needs to put some time together where he's injury-free, from an evaluation standpoint, and prove that he can stay healthy over the long term." Fox will be the Lions' fifth tackle if he keeps his roster spot.

Lions OT Jason Fox was scratched from this week's minicamp with a sore knee.

The Lions are calling it a precaution rather than a setback. It's a concern, though, for a player who has experienced knee problems since coming out of college, including an injury that ended his season prematurely last November. He's already been passed by rookie Riley Reiff in the coaching staff's eyes.

Coach Jim Schwartz emphasized that this is going to be a big offseason for backup OT Jason Fox.

"He is a guy we drafted and he's flashed some really strong potential," Schwartz said. "He just hasn't stayed healthy. ... We feel like he's a good offensive lineman. He fits a lot of things that we look for." Long on upside -- and knee problems -- Fox has appeared in four games through two NFL seasons.

Lions placed OT Jason Fox (knee) on injured reserve, ending his season.

Fox has been battling a foot injury since early in training camp, though a knee injury suffered in Thursday's practice ended his season. He's had knee problems since coming out of college. This isn't to the same knee that has so often troubled Fox, but he will need surgery. The 2010 fourth-rounder remains a raw but intriguing developmental project.

Lions backup OT Jason Fox (foot) has resumed practicing.

Fox missed each of the Lions' first four games, and has been sidelined since early August. With starting left tackle Jeff Backus off to a slow start, Fox shouldn't be hurting for snaps once he finally returns to game action.

Lions backup OT Jason Fox will not need surgery on his injured foot.

Fox remains in a cast, but there is no fracture. It's considered a short-term injury. Meanwhile, starter Gosder Cherilus (knee) returned to a full practice. These are positive steps toward keeping Matthew Stafford upright this season.

Lions backup OT Jason Fox has been sidelined with a foot injury.

We're highlighting Fox's injury because the Lions are down to their fourth and fifth tackles as the training camp starters. The team "hopes" to have Jeff Backus (pectoral) and Gosder Cherilus (knee) back for the season opener, but this situation is getting a bit hairy for Matthew Stafford. We'd feel better about his breakout potential if Backus and Cherilus get the green light by late August.

Lions OT Jason Fox says time off during the lockout has allowed his troublesome right knee to completely heal.

Fox had surgery on the knee as a rookie and didn't play until Week 17. "I was so anxious to play last year that I probably didn't give it the rest it needed during OTAs," said Fox. "... I kind of rushed it a little bit." Fox will compete to be the Lions' swing tackle behind Jeff Backus and Gosder Cherilus.

The Lions don't envision fourth-round OT Jason Fox contributing at all during his rookie season.

Fox is a good athlete with plenty of upside, but he was drafted as a developmental prospect to eventually take over for LT Jeff Backus. In a best case scenario, he could see time late in the season if Gosder Cherilus remains a disappointment at right tackle.

Lions signed fourth-round OT Jason Fox to a three-year contract. Profootballtalk.com reports that the signing bonus is $330,907.

Fox is a good athlete with four years of starting experience in the ACC, but he fell in the draft due to a lack of ideal strength and some background of injuries. Ideally, Fox will replace Jeff Backus at left tackle by 2012.

Lions fourth-round OT Jason Fox is expected to be held out of rookie camp because he's coming off a minor knee surgery.

Fox insists he's close to 100 percent and wants to participate, but the Lions have no reason to push him. A four-year starter at Miami, Fox is already a favorite of coach Jim Schwartz, who called him "exactly what we're looking for in an offensive tackle."

Lions selected Miami OT Jason Fox with the No. 128 overall pick in the NFL draft.

After Matt Millen lowered expectations, Lions GM Martin Mayhew continues to impress. Fox is an underrated tackle prospect as a fundamentally sound blocker with good footwork to go with a 6'7" frame. He'll need to get in the weight room while he develops behind Jeff Backus and Gosder Cherilus.
