At Chiefs camp, Cam Sheffield is working as Andy Studebaker's replacement as an outside rusher in the nickel defense.

Sheffield and Tamba Hali are the outside 'backers and Derrick Johnson stays in the middle. Justin Houston is also getting some looks at the nickel rusher spot, although the rookie has mostly been with the third team. Studebaker will only be a two-down linebacker, and Sheffield could end up with more sacks.

Chiefs placed OLB Cameron Sheffield on injured reserve with a neck injury, ending his season.

Sheffield went down late in the preseason, though he'd resumed practicing since. It's possible he had some sort of spinal cord concussion, as Sheffield was scratched for the season opener. The fifth-round rookie was showing promise as a situational rusher before the year-ending injury.

Chiefs LB Cameron Sheffield has reportedly been released from the hospital after suffering a neck injury in Friday night's game.

Players were huddled around Sheffield in prayer, so the injury appears to be significant. The Chiefs are calling it a neck injury and Sheffield did not move that we could see. A fifth-round pick out of Troy, Sheffield was playing extensively in the game as a nickel rusher. He's fourth on the Chiefs' depth chart at outside linebacker.

Chiefs signed fifth-round OLB Cam Sheffield to a four-year contract, including a $194,000 roster bonus.

The Chiefs are handing out large initial roster bonuses as opposed to signing bonuses on their rookie deals, which could help their future salary cap situation. An athletic pass rusher from Troy, Sheffield's pre-draft workouts were slightly disappointing, but his pedigree and college production were impressive. He'll compete for snaps opposite Tamba Hali right away.

Chiefs selected Troy OLB Cameron Sheffield with the No. 142 overall pick in the 2010 NFL Draft.

Sheffield was an undersized college defensive end, earning All-Conference honors as a senior. The Chiefs will move him to outside linebacker, where his non-stop motor will play well. He'll start out on special teams in Kansas City, with the opportunity to move up behind Mike Vrabel on defense.
