The Bucs have newfound depth at the position with Ronde Barber moving from cornerback and first-rounder Mark Barron on board. Asante's release is good news for Cody Grimm, Keith Tandy and UDFA Sean Baker out of Ball State.

A fifth-round pick this year, Asante failed to make the Browns' roster after a disappointing showing in training camp. He'll concentrate on special teams while adding depth in Tampa.

Browns waived S Larry Asante, DE Clifton Geathers, DB Chris Chancellor, OG Paul Fanaika, DL Travis Ivey, DL Swanson Miller, OL Pat Murray, and DL Brian Sanford.

The early returns on the Browns' 2010 draft are less than encouraging. Colt McCoy did survive cuts after struggling in August, but Montario Hardesty is done for the year, fifth-rounder Asante showed nothing in camp, and sixth-rounder Carlton Mitchell has shown iffy hands.

According to the Cleveland Plain Dealer's Terry Pluto, rookie S Larry Asante showed so little in training camp that the Browns may not even keep him on the practice squad.

Asante, a favorite of NFL Network draft analyst Mike Mayock, appears to be buried on the depth chart in Cleveland, and apparently hasn't shown much as a special teamer either. He'll be worth a look for teams in need of an in-the-box safety at final cuts. The Browns may just be too deep at the position.

Browns agreed to terms with fifth-round SS Larry Asante on a four-year, $1.96 million contract.

Asante was a hard-hitting run-stopper while earning All-Big 12 honors at Nebraska last season. After a strong spring, he's expected to challenge Abram Elam for the starting strong safety gig.

Browns coach Eric Mangini says he is considering starting two rookie safeties this season -- Larry Asante and T.J. Ward.

"I’m definitely open to that," Mangini said. "Eugene Wilson and Asante Samuel played a lot their rookie season in New England. It just depends on where they are." In this scenario, Ward would be the free safety with Asante on the strong side. Mangini's comments may be a shot at unsigned RFA Abram Elam, who is sitting out voluntary OTAs due to contract displeasure.

Browns selected Nebraska SS Larry Asante with the No. 160 pick in the 2010 draft.

Strong against the run, Asante brings nice size after picking up All-Big 12 honors with the Cornhuskers last season. Asante is weak in coverage, so he'll start out on special teams if he makes the final roster. The Browns have now added two safeties and a corner to a weak secondary.
