The Dolphins are using Shelley Smith at right guard.
Smith's strength is run blocking, so it makes sense to use him on the strong side next to rookie RT Ja'Wuan James. From left to right, Miami's projected first-team line is LT Branden Albert, LG Billy Turner, C Mike Pouncey, RG Smith, and RT James. Turner is trying to hold off Nate Garner and Dallas Thomas for snaps. May 27 - 12:29 PM

Dolphins agreed to terms with OG Shelley Smith, formerly of the Rams, on a two-year, $5.5 million contract.

The deal includes $1.5 million guaranteed. It's a nice signing for a team moving on from the Richie Incognito/John Jerry "era," though Smith has made only eight career starts. Smith is a road grader in the run game, but needs to improve as a pass blocker. Going on 27, he'll get every opportunity to earn a starting job.

Free agent OG Shelley Smith left his Patriots visit without a deal and will now meet with the Dolphins.

Smith would be an outstanding fit in Miami because he's a zone-scheme lineman with difference-making run-blocking ability. He's also soon turning 27 and could be a building block on a team with glaring offensive line holes.

Free agent OG Shelley Smith left his Giants visit without a contract and is now visiting the Patriots.

The Pats have turned things up a notch on day two of free agency. Smith is a promising young guard who excelled as a run blocker in St. Louis last year, and deserved more playing time. Per the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Smith is scheduled to visit the Dolphins if the Patriots let him leave town.

Free agent G Shelley Smith is visiting the Giants Wednesday.

The Giants landed Geoff Schwartz on Tuesday, but they're still hungry for offensive line help as they rebuild they unit. Smith has only started eight games over the last two seasons, but has been impressive as a run-blocker. Entering his age-27 season, there's upside here. NJ.com's Jordan Raanan adds that Smith is scheduled to meet with the Patriots if he gets out of Jersey.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports four teams expressed interest in free agent OG Shelley Smith on Saturday.

Smith has appeared in 25 games, starting eight, the past two seasons. He played 371 offensive snaps in 2013 and received glowing reviews for his run-blocking. Smith is a strong pulling guard who would make sense for teams that implement zone-blocking schemes. The Rams don't appear to have much interest in re-signing Smith, even though they need a ton of help up front.
Mar 9 - 12:51 PM

Shelley Smith and Chris Williams rotated as the first-team left guard at Rams OTAs.

Smith started six games -- four at left guard and two at right guard -- for the Rams last season, and he and Williams rotated in place of an injured Harvey Dahl at right guard for the final three weeks in 2012. Second-year OG Rok Watkins would also seem to be in the conversation for the starting left guard job.

A sixth-round pick in 2010, Smith has yet to appear in an NFL game. He spent 2011 on injured reserve with an ankle injury.

Texans placed OG Shelley Smith on injured reserve with an ankle injury, ending his season.

The Texans had high hopes for Smith as a developmental prospect, but couldn't afford to save his roster spot with Kasey Studdard and Antoine Caldwell on the shelf as well. The team signed ex-Bengals G/T Andrew Gardner to replace Smith on the roster. Gardner is transitioning from a power- to zone-blocking scheme.

Texans signed G Shelley Smith from their practice squad.

Smith spent some time earlier this season on the active roster but wasn't getting any playing time. The sixth-rounder is a good athlete that has some long-term upside in a zone-blocking scheme.

Texans agreed to terms with sixth-round OL Shelley Smith on a four-year, $1.894 million contract.

A guard/center prospect from Colorado State, Smith's athleticism has been praised by Houston's coaching staff, indicating that he's a good fit for the team's zone-blocking scheme. He still needs a good camp to make the club.

Texans coach Gary Kubiak said that sixth-round pick Shelley Smith can play either guard or center.

Smith played guard at Colorado State and has good size at 6'4/300. Continuity along the Texans' offensive line helped to keep Matt Schaub upright last season, and Smith will be a backup if he makes the roster.
