Texans placed OG Shelley Smith on injured reserve with an ankle injury, ending his season.

The Texans had high hopes for Smith as a developmental prospect, but couldn't afford to save his roster spot with Kasey Studdard and Antoine Caldwell on the shelf as well. The team signed ex-Bengals G/T Andrew Gardner to replace Smith on the roster. Gardner is transitioning from a power- to zone-blocking scheme.

Texans agreed to terms with sixth-round OL Shelley Smith on a four-year, $1.894 million contract.

A guard/center prospect from Colorado State, Smith's athleticism has been praised by Houston's coaching staff, indicating that he's a good fit for the team's zone-blocking scheme. He still needs a good camp to make the club.

Texans coach Gary Kubiak said that sixth-round pick Shelley Smith can play either guard or center.

Smith played guard at Colorado State and has good size at 6'4/300. Continuity along the Texans' offensive line helped to keep Matt Schaub upright last season, and Smith will be a backup if he makes the roster.
