Bucs C/G Ted Larsen saved three teens from rough gulf waters Wednesday after their kayak had overturned.

Larsen and his girlfriend were fishing when he heard the Coast Guard distress signal. Realizing he was close, Larsen rushed over to pull the teens into his 24-foot boat and usher them safely back to shore. "It could have been a big deal. You always read about overturned kayaks," Larsen said. "It was good to help them. It just felt it was a good thing to do."

Larsen was a sixth-round pick who the Pats probably wanted on the practice squad. He'll practice behind starting center Jeff Faine in Tampa.

Larsen, a converted defensive tackle at N.C. State, was a sixth-round pick. Welch, a seventh-rounder, was converted from tight end at Vanderbilt.

Patriots signed sixth-round C Ted Larsen to a four-year, $1.87 million contract with an $80,300 signing bonus.

Larsen is the first of the Pats' 12 draft picks to sign. A defensive tackle early his career at N.C. State, Larsen converted to center as a junior. Though he's an interesting developmental project behind Dan Koppen, he could bide his time on the practice squad as a rookie.
