Jamar Chaney will start at weak-side linebacker in place of Akeem Jordan (hamstring) versus the Giants in Week 4.
Chaney had been a healthy scratch the past two weeks, leaving Brian Rolle to fill in when Jordan went down with the injury last week. Chaney will give way to nickelback Brandon Boykin in three-wide sets, which the Giants have used on 59 percent of their plays this season. Fri, Sep 28, 2012 01:38:00 PM

Eagles LB Jamar Chaney (neck surgery) was cleared to return to practice on Tuesday.

Chaney wasn't limited in practice, so he should be fine going forward. With rookie Mychal Kendricks on the strong side, Chaney is working at weak-side linebacker. He expects to compete with Brian Rolle for the starting job.

Eagles LB Jamar Chaney (neck surgery) won't participate in mandatory June minicamp.

Chaney jumped the gun when he declared himself 100 percent in late April. Chaney's absence means No. 46 pick Mychal Kendricks will operate as the Eagles' first-string SAM linebacker in next month's minicamp. Kendricks is the favorite to win the job in training camp.

Eagles SLB Jamar Chaney says he's fully recovered from offseason neck surgery.

Chaney admitted he doesn't know whether he's still Philly's starting strong-side linebacker, a position that could be affected by Friday's draft picks. Chaney was penciled in at "Sam" after the Eagles traded for DeMeco Ryans.

Jamar Chaney (neck surgery) is expected to shift to strong-side linebacker following the acquisition of MLB DeMeco Ryans.

Brian Rolle will stay on the weak side, leaving Akeem Jordan as the odd man out. Chaney will likely give way to Casey Matthews or Keenan Clayton on passing downs, limiting his production in IDP formats. Chaney expects to be recovered from neck surgery by training camp.

Eagles LB Jamar Chaney expects to be recovered by mid-March from January surgery to repair a herniated disk in his neck.

Chaney insists the neck fusion procedure was elective, and he's already working out in the weight room. "It's coming along pretty good now," said Chaney. "By the end of this month, maybe next month, I should be back to myself 100 percent."

Eagles MLB Jamar Chaney underwent surgery Tuesday to repair a herniated disk in his neck.

Chaney suffered the injury in the season finale, when he was checked for a concussion and initially believed to have sustained a stinger. There's not yet a recovery timetable, though a herniated disk is no small injury for a sideline-to-sideline linebacker involved in up to a dozen collisions per game. Although Chaney led the Eagles in tackles, he graded out below average in Pro Football Focus' 2011 ratings.

Eagles MLB Jamar Chaney was forced from Sunday's game with a head injury.

Chaney was injured on an attempted tackle of Evan Royster and immediately went to the locker room for further evaluation. It is believed he may have suffered a ''stinger.'' His return is questionable.

Eagles MLB Jamar Chaney has been replaced by Casey Matthews in the nickel package.

"When you're 4-8 and not playing defense the way you're supposed to, they're going to make changes," explained Chaney. Matthews hadn't played on defense since his early-season benching. The Matthews-Keenan Clayton pair is the fourth different nickel combo for Philly this season.

The Eagles have moved Jamar Chaney to middle linebacker, a source tells beat writer Jeff McLane.

Struggling rookie Casey Matthews will stay in the starting lineup at the "WILL" position, with Moise Fokou opposite him at "SAM." It's a move that should have been made a long time ago as Chaney is more talented and more prepared to lead the Eagles' defense. IDP owners should note that Chaney had 40 tackles over the final four games of last season, including the playoffs. He's a player.

Beat writer Jeff McLane calls Jamar Chaney a "viable option" to replace Casey Matthews at middle linebacker.

Matthews' lackluster showing on Thursday night has Eagles nation in panic mode. And since free agent Lofa Tatupu doesn't appear to be on the radar, moving Chaney back inside is the easiest move. In that scenario, Keenan Clayton would be installed at WILL and and Moise Fokou would shift to SAM. Chaney would get a nice boost in IDP formats.

Jamar Chaney is considered the only "lock" among the Eagles' current linebackers to start in 2011.

The Eagles are moving on from Ernie Sims and Akeem Jordan. Stewart Bradley was tendered at the second-round level, and the team does want him back. It's not certain yet whether Chaney or Bradley would start in the middle in that scenario. The weak side is wide open heading into the draft.

Eagles coach Andy Reid confirmed at the NFL owners meeting that he is open to the idea of starting Jamar Chaney at middle linebacker.

Make sure Chaney isn't owned in your IDP league; he's got mammoth upside for the 2011 season. Free agent Stewart Bradley, who is likely to return, would then move to strong-side linebacker. The weak-side position is undecided, but Chaney would be an every-down middle 'backer and 150-tackle candidate.

Eagles defensive coordinator Sean McDermott hinted that MLB Jamar Chaney might keep the starting job even after Stewart Bradley (dislocated elbow) returns.

This comes exactly a week after McDermott said Bradley would get his job back when he's ready, which should be in the first round of the playoffs. Ultimately, we're likely to see both backers get plenty of snaps, with Bradley probably playing on most early downs.

NFL Network's Brian Baldinger calls Eagles rookie Jamar Chaney "already one of the best middle linebackers in the league" after just one start in place of Stewart Bradley (elbow).

After watching coaches tape, Baldinger anointed Chaney "phenomenal in all phases of the game" against the Giants. It's high praise for a rookie flying well under the radar. A tackling machine with true sideline-to-sideline speed, Chaney appears to be an upgrade on a very capable Bradley. The Eagles have stated that Bradley won't lose his job to injury, though Chaney may force them to reconsider that stance in the next two games. Bradley is due to hit free agency in 2011.
