Coleman could miss the finale with an eye toward being 100 percent for the playoffs, but coach Ron Rivera is confident he's avoided major injury. Panthers S Kurt Coleman suffered a foot sprain Week 16 against the Falcons.

Coleman suffered the injury on Julio Jones' 70-yard touchdown in the third quarter. He is headed for scans Monday. A former special teamer in Philadelphia, Coleman established himself as a playmaking safety with the Chiefs last season, and he earned a starting spot with a strong training camp with the Panthers. Coleman is tied for third in the league with seven interceptions. Losing him for any amount of time would be a big blow to the defense.

The Panthers' official website said S Kurt Coleman "frequently worked with the first-team defense" in camp.

Coleman was listed behind Roman Harper and Tre Boston on the Panthers' first depth chart, but he appears to have leapfrogged Boston in the last week. After being relegated to special teams work his final season in Philadelphia, Coleman had something of a career resurgence with the Chiefs last season. He played almost 400 snaps on defense, recording 37 tackles and three interceptions.

The Chiefs signed Coleman off the scrap heap prior to Week 1 last season, and it turned out to be one of their best pickups. Coleman accounted for half the team's interceptions despite playing just 377 snaps. Capable of playing both safety spots, Coleman gives Carolina depth with Thomas DeCoud gone and Roman Harper aging.

The Kansas City Star expects free agent S Kurt Coleman to seek $1.5-$2 million annually.

Coming off a year where he played only 74 defensive snaps for the Eagles, Coleman was highly effective as the Chiefs' No. 4 safety in 2014. He notched 37 tackles, three interceptions and a forced fumble despite playing a modest 396 snaps. Still only 27 (in July), Coleman could get a chance to compete for a starting job, but is still best suited to a reserve role.

ESPN Vikings reporter Ben Goessling doesn't project S Kurt Coleman to make the 53-man roster.

Coleman is merely a special teams player, but he's a fine one at that. Goessling has the Vikings keeping third-year S Robert Blanton and sixth-round rookie Antone Exum over Coleman. Blanton got some run with the first-team defense next to Harrison Smith during the spring, while Exum is a hybrid corner/safety.

If signed, Coleman would only be asked to help on special teams and fill a backup defensive role in Minnesota. Coleman started 27 games between 2011 and 2012 in Philadelphia, but played just 74 defensive snaps for the Eagles last season. He has also visited the Jets and Colts.

Free agent S Kurt Coleman is visiting the Vikings.

Coleman's been busy the past week; he made trips to the Jets and Colts last week. The 2010 seventh-round pick played just 74 defensive snaps last season. In Minnesota, he'd chip in on special teams and back up both safety spots.
