Patriots S Ross Ventrone is expected to open the year on the practice squad for the third straight season.

Ventrone is known for being waived and re-signed by the Patriots several times, and was moved off the active roster for the regular-season finale to maintain practice squad eligibility. Undersized for an NFL safety, Ventrone's roster status is entirely dependent on his ability to contribute on special teams.

Patriots signed S Ross Ventrone, WR Britt Davis, OT Matt Kopa, DE Aaron Lavarias, LB Markell Carter, and LB Mike Rivera to reserve/futures contracts.

The Pat essentially re-signed their practice squad with an invitation to offseason workouts and training camp. Ventrone was the ultimate roster yo-yo in 2011 while Carter's contract was doubled to keep him away from a poacher in December.

Absurdly, this is the sixth time Ventrone has been waived since August. He's made two tackles in eight games between all the comings and goings. Perhaps one day the waiver wire will be renamed the "Ventrone wire."

Another week, another promotion for Ventrone, who has tallied one tackle in six games while being shuttled back and forth between the active roster and practice squad. He's a good bet to be waived next week.

Ventrone has seen time on special teams in five games this season. He's also been involved in 14 transactions. As John Sarmento of 2 Mugs Fantasy Football put it, Ventrone has been released "more times than an undersized trout."

Ventrone was waived just last Saturday, but cleared waivers and was re-signed to the Patriots' practice squad. If he's active against the Jets on Sunday, he'll be making his NFL debut.

A pretty good indication SS Pat Chung will return from his broken thumb this week. Signed last Saturday, Ventrone did not get on the field in Week 3. He should be signed back to the practice squad if he clears waivers.

A pretty good indication that SS Pat Chung (thumb surgery) will be out against the Bills despite his surprising return to practice Friday. An undrafted free agent out of Villanova last year, Ventrone will be making his NFL debut if he's active on Sunday.
