Ben Garland and Shelley Smith are the top competitors for the Broncos' left guard opening.
Garland has only played 47 snaps in his career while Smith is coming off a nightmare season with the Dolphins. Denver's left guard, center and right tackle positions are all up for grabs. It's not an ideal situation for Peyton Manning but if anyone can overcome a lackluster offensive line, it's The Sheriff. Jul 26 - 11:13 AM

NBC Denver expects OG Ben Garland to get a "legitimate shot" at the Broncos' left-guard job.

Garland is battling Shelley Smith, who signed a two-year, $5.65 million deal in March. That money would suggest Smith is the heavy favorite, but he bombed for the Dolphins last season. An ex-defensive lineman, Garland has only 47 snaps of experience, but is a fit for new coach Gary Kubiak's zone-blocking scheme.

Broncos re-signed exclusive rights free agent OG Ben Garland to a one-year, $510,000 contract.

Garland, 27, appeared in eight games last season. He'll add depth to Denver's interior line. Garland should compete for a backup role in training camp.

The Denver Post considers Ben Garland a "dark horse" for the Broncos' left-guard vacancy.

The more logical solution is moving RT Orlando Franklin to left guard and letting Chris Clark play right tackle. Garland, however, has been on the practice squad the past two seasons, so the team obviously is high on him. The former college defensive tackle will have a "chance to compete" for the job, per GM John Elway.

Broncos waived G/DE Ben Garland.

The writing was on the wall when the Broncos recently moved Garland back to defense following a failed conversion to guard. Garland, 25, spent 2012 on the practice squad after fulfilling his Air Force commitments 2010-2011.

The Broncos have moved Ben Garland from defensive tackle to offensive guard.

Garland was a three-year starter at defensive tackle at Air Force and then signed in Denver as an undrafted free agent after the 2010 draft. He spent two years fulfilling his military duties before sitting on the 2012 practice squad. The 6-foot-5, 275-pounder will try to crack the roster at guard this season.

Air Force alum Ben Garland is still pursuing an NFL career and recently gave up an opportunity to begin pilot training.

Garland, who turns 30 in a week, was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Broncos last spring and spent the year on the "reserve/military" list. He won't be eligible to play in 2011, but could get a sort of work release from the Air Force next year. Garland is a 6'5/275-pound defensive lineman.
