Panthers signed P Mike Scifres, formerly of the Chargers.
He'll compete with Swayze Waters for Carolina's punting job. Once one of the NFL's top punters, Scifres' career has been derailed by injury. Still only 35 -- which is young for a punter -- Scifres will get a shot to revive his career under Ron Rivera, who formerly spent time on San Diego's coaching staff. Jun 7 - 6:42 PM

Chargers released P Mike Scifres.

Scifres wasn't needed after San Diego drafted Drew Kaser in the sixth round. He averaged a middling 45.3 yards on punts last year. The Chargers save $3.56 million from his release.

Chargers placed P Mike Scifres on injured reserve with a broken collarbone, ending his season.

There was some hope Scifres could return during the playoffs, but with injuries mounting the Chargers could use the roster spot. A 12-year veteran, Scifres had never missed a game before fracturing his clavicle against the Patriots Week 14. He should ready to go for OTAs.

Chargers P Mike Scifres is having surgery on his fractured clavicle Monday morning.

Scifres, the Chargers' punter for the last 12 seasons, could be back for the playoffs if San Diego qualifies.

The Chargers fear P Mike Scifres fractured his clavicle in Sunday night's Week 14 loss to the Patriots.

If the diagnosis is confirmed, Scifres would be done for the season. The 12-year veteran of the Chargers is currently 15th in punt average at 45.7 yards.

Chargers agreed to a five-year, $18 million extension with P Mike Scifres.

Scifres was set to become a free agent after this season. He's been the Chargers' punter since 2004 and has never missed a game, playing through a hernia injury in 2009. Scifres ranked third in the league last season with a 46.9 yards-per-punt average and the Chargers clearly didn't blame him for their 2010 special teams woes.

Chargers fired special teams coach Steve Crosby.

The Chargers had arguably the worst special teams in the history of the NFL, giving up five of the nine blocked punts in the league this season. Crosby was one of the best special teams coaches football during his tenure, but ended up as the fall guy. He shouldn't struggle to find another job in 2011.

Chargers P Mike Scifres left Sunday's game with a left leg injury early in the first quarter.

Scifres was drilled and helicoptered on his first punt attempted, landing hard on his hip and upper leg. He's going to try to get back in, but kicker Kris Brown may be forced into action. It was the Chargers' fifth blocked punt of the season. Scifres returned to the game to hold on the Chargers' first extra point attempt.

Chargers P Mike Scifres (hernia surgery) has resumed punting at OTAs.

A bilateral hernia and abdominal tear hindered Scifres throughout 2009, as he finished with his lowest yards-per-punt average (45.0) since 2006. The mark was still good enough to rank top-ten in the NFL, and fourth in the AFC.

The Chargers revealed that P Mike Scifres underwent hernia surgery earlier this offseason.

Scifres, one of the best punters in the league, is fully expected to be healthy by training camp.

Mike Scifres averaged 51.7 yards on six punts against the Colts in a Divisional Round, pinning them inside the ten-yard line five times.

Five times! We intended to immortalize Scifres as the first punter with a post-game Rotoworld blurb last night, but the following day will have to do. It was the greatest playoff punting performance we've ever seen and a huge reason why San Diego advanced.
