The Packers are still talking with restricted free agent CB Sam Shields about a long-term contract.
Nothing is imminent as Shields is at least third in line for a new deal behind Aaron Rodgers and Clay Matthews. There's no urgency because he'll eventually sign the one-year, $2.02M RFA tender. Per Pro Football Focus, Shields graded out as a top-eight corner in coverage last year. Apr 16 - 8:27 AM

Packers tendered restricted free agent CB Sam Shields at the second-round level.

The two sides couldn't work out a long-term deal, so the Packers ensure that Shields will remain under club control via the tender. Coming off an injury-plagued 2012 campaign, the former undrafted rookie out of Miami enters this offseason as a starting corner opposite Tramon Williams.

The Packers plan to discuss a long-term deal with restricted free agent CB Sam Shields.

The Packers will place at least a second-round tender on Shields, and could look to sign him to an extension rather than pay him the roughly $2 million he would count against the cap on a one-year deal. Shields missed significant time due to injury in 2012, but will return in a starting role with Green Bay.

Packers RCB Sam Shields (ankle) returned with four tackles and an interception in Sunday's win over the Lions.

It was Shields' first game since sustained a high-ankle sprain in Week 6. He initially came off the bench behind Davon House, but was in his customary spot opposite Tramon Williams by the second quarter. With Casey Hayward and House playing well and Charles Woodson (collarbone) due back soon, this Packers secondary has a chance to shoot up the rankings.

Packers RCB Sam Shields (ankle) has suffered a setback, and will be sidelined a "couple of weeks."

Shields was originally knocked out with a shin injury, but is apparently dealing with an ankle ailment. He hasn't played since Week 6. Rookie Casey Hayward has acquitted himself well in Shields' absence.

Packers RCB Sam Shields will compete with Casey Hayward and Davon House if he returns from his shin injury following the Week 10 bye.

Shields was the victim of a few questionable penalties early in the season, and it may be enough to cost him a starting job. Hayward was named NFL's defensive rookie of the month for October, and CBs coach Joe Whitt believes House has come "probably further along than anybody I've had."

Packers RCB Sam Shields (shin) has been ruled out for Week 8 against the Jaguars.

Impressive rookie Casey Hayward will draw another start after notching his fourth interception in the past three games last week against the Rams. The Jags' No. 32-ranked pass game is unlikely to capitalize on Shields and FS Charles Woodson's (collarbone) Week 8 absences. They just don't have the firepower.

Packers RCB Sam Shields (shin) has been ruled out for Week 7 against the Rams.

Shields was kicked in the leg on Sunday Night Football in Week 6 against the Texans and was replaced by Jarrett Bush in the starting lineup. The Packers will turn to impressive rookie Casey Hayward at right corner in St. Louis.

Packers RCB Sam Shields was forced from Sunday's game with a right shin injury.

Shields was apparently kicked. He was writhing in pain before being helped off the field. With the Packers whipping the Texans 42-17, his night his certainly, but it's possible he's dealing with a multi-week injury. Jarrett Bush is now in the game at right cornerback. It's been an awful night on the injury front for a team already missing B.J. Raji, as starting linebackers D.J. Smith and Nick Perry were both knocked out with knee injuries.

The Packers still haven't named their starting right cornerback.

Sam Shields and Jarrett Bush have been rotating on the right side while Tramon Williams holds down the left side. It's not a major factor as the Packers will use their nickel defense plenty.

Packers CB Sam Shields has reportedly gotten off to a "wretched start" at training camp.

Shields' 2011 performance fell by the wayside after a promising rookie season, and he opened camp practicing behind special teamer Jarrett Bush. Per beat writer Bob McGinn, Shields has looked like "a mess," getting caught peeking into the backfield and covering with bad technique. Shields isn't going to be guaranteed a 2012 roster spot after the addition of Casey Hayward.

Packers CB Sam Shields (concussion) expects to play Sunday at San Diego.

Shields was cleared to practice after the Packers had their Week 8 bye so this confirms earlier reports that he will in fact be available. His return to the lineup should help revamp a struggling secondary that's given up 290 passing yards per game and 32 plays of at least 20 yards.

Packers CB Sam Shields has been medically cleared to return from his concussion.

Shields wound up missing just one game. He'll return to nickel back duties after Green Bay's Week 8 bye. Shields has 23 tackles and two picks this season.
Mon, Oct 24, 2011 04:26:00 PM

Packers declared CB Sam Shields, LT Chad Clifton, G Ray Dominguez, DE Mike Neal, LB Jamari Lattimore, LB Robert Francois and LB Frank Zombo inactive for Week 7 against the Vikings.

Coverage liability Jarrett Bush will take over nickel corner duties with Shields battling the aftereffects of a concussion this week. With the exception of Clifton, the Packers are healthy on offense.

Packers CB Sam Shields (concussion) is listed as doubtful for Week 7 and is not expected to play against the Vikings.

The Packers will have to go with special teamer Jarrett Bush as their left corner in the nickel defense. Green Bay fans know Bush well because he's been a liability in coverage for years. Unfortunately for the Vikings, rookie Christian Ponder is unlikely to benefit from the downgrade with Molasses Michael Jenkins and Wide Deceiver Bernard Berrian on the outside.
