Rams signed CB Sam Shields.
Shields hasn't played since suffering the fifth documented concussion of his career in Week 1 of the 2016 season. Speaking recently, he said he was "one away" from retirement. Now on the wrong side of 30, Shields is purely a speculative flier for a team that's low on healthy depth behind Marcus Peters. Mar 8 - 5:40 PM

Free agent CB Sam Shields says he's one concussion away from retirement.

Shields suffered the fifth documented concussion of his playing career in Week 1 of 2016 with the Packers, and hasn't played since. Shields believes he'll sign with a team because he "can still run," but said he'd call his career "a wrap" if he suffered another concussion. 30-year-old Shields is visiting the Rams on Tuesday. He is scheduled to meet with the Browns after that.

Free agent CB Sam Shields will visit the Rams on Tuesday.

He'll visit the Browns after that. With slot CB Nickell Robey-Coleman and Trumaine Johnson's contracts up, the Rams are getting aggressive addressing corner, and staying aggressive even after acquiring Marcus Peters from the Chiefs.

Free agent CB Sam Shields will visit the Browns.

Shields hasn't played since Week 1 of the 2016 season, when he was still a Packer. Shields finished that year on injured reserve with concussion issues before spending 2017 out of the league. He turned 30 in December. Were he to land a Browns contract, he would be facing long odds of cracking the 53-man roster.

NFL suspended free agent CB Sam Shields two games.

It likely does not matter as Shields has not received any interest since being released by the Packers in February. With a long and scary history of concussions, Shields' career may be over.

Packers released CB Sam Shields.

Shields made the announcement on Instagram. It was an easy move for the Packers due to Shields' recurrence of severe concussions and $12.125 million cap number, $9 million of which now comes off Green Bay's books. Shields suffered his latest concussion in Week 1 and missed the remainder of the season. While he is obviously a major health risk, 29-year-old Shields has played at a high level when healthy and should draw interest from cornerback-needy teams if he gains medical clearance. As of late January, Shields still hadn't been cleared.

Packers coach Mike McCarthy said CB Sam Shields still has not cleared the concussion protocol.

Shields also recently admitted he still suffers occasional headaches. It is a major concern considering Shields suffered his fifth career concussion in September. Shields still wants to play, but his NFL future is murky at best. The Packers are expected to move on this offseason even if Shields decides to return.

Packers CB Sam Shields (concussion) said he's still having occasional headaches.

Shields suffered his second concussion in a calendar year back in Week 1 and ended up missing the rest of the season. It's a major concern, but Shields said he still wants to play. "I’m thinking it’s not over. I’ve still got more in me," Shields said. "I just love the game, man, and I feel that I can get back out there and play." The Packers are expected to explore cutting Shields this offseason.

ESPN Packers reporter Rob Demovsky fully expects the team to release CB Sam Shields this offseason.

Shields went down in Week 1 with a concussion that ultimately landed him on injured reserve. Cornerback is arguably the Packers' biggest need, even though they're one of the final four teams standing heading into championship weekend, but Shields is unlikely to be a solution to the problem. He has one year left on his contract, and Green Bay can save $9 million by releasing Shields. He's still just 29, but it's fair to wonder about his playing future after a serious concussion.

Injured Packers CB Sam Shields (concussions) was charged with possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia this week stemming from an October 19 incident.

He'll go back to court on April 24. The arrest occurred literally one day after the Packers placed Shields on injured reserve with a severe concussion on October 18. The combination of Shields' brain injury and his subsequent arrest should raise eyebrows inside and outside the league. Shields has suffered a whopping five career concussions. He turned 29 early last month.

Packers placed CB Sam Shields on injured reserve with a concussion.

Shields posted on social media that he hopes to be the Packers' "return" player in eight weeks. Shields has been sidelined since Week 2. NFL.com's Mike Garofolo reports his concussion has "not subsided as first hoped." It's Shields' fifth career concussion. It's a big loss for a pass defense that's been middle of the road bordering on bad through five games. The Pack are very thin at cornerback, especially with Damarious Randall battling a groin injury.

Packers coach Mike McCarthy said CB Sam Shields (concussion) will not play Week 5.

McCarthy said he is "making some improvements," but Shields has yet to practice since suffering the injury Week 1. With a long and scary history of concussions, Shields could be out several more weeks. The Packers' secondary has been a disaster the last two games.
