Cowboys G/C Phil Costa is fully medically cleared after late-season ankle surgery.
Although Costa made just three 2012 starts, Dallas' run blocking was noticeably better with him in the lineup. First-round stretch Travis Frederick will be the Cowboys' starting center, leaving Costa to compete for the right guard position with Mackenzy Bernadeau, or be the top interior reserve off the bench. Updating a previous item, Cowboys C Phil Costa's new two-year contract is worth $2.7 million.

The deal included a $450,000 signing bonus, and Costa will count $975,000 against the 2013 salary cap. The new deal saves the Cowboys roughly $350,000 against the cap, as he would have been tendered at the $1.323 million level.

Cowboys re-signed C Phil Costa to a two-year contract.

He was previously slated for restricted free agency. Although Costa struggled with bad snaps in 2011, he's flashed difference-making run-blocking ability when healthy. Unfortunately, Costa missed 13 games in 2012 and had surgery to repair ligament damage in his right foot in late December. The Cowboys do anticipate he'll be ready for OTAs and project Costa as a long-term answer at center.

Owner Jerry Jones says he could see restricted C Phil Costa as the Cowboys' starter for "several years."

Costa started just three games in 2012 due to back and ankle injuries, but the Cowboys are high on him enough to give Costa at least a second-round restricted tender. He also has the ability to play guard. Dallas only has one locked-in starter on the offensive line -- left tackle Tyron Smith.

ESPN Dallas expects the Cowboys to re-sign restricted free agent C Phil Costa, and let him "battle it out" for a starting job in camp.

A balky back and dislocated ankle limited Costa to three appearances in 2012, but he's still only 25, and would cost a maximum of $1.323 million to re-sign. He's also capable of playing guard. Beat writer Todd Archer expects Costa to compete with Ryan Cook, Mackenzy Bernadeau and perhaps a "high" draft pick.

Cowboys C Phil Costa underwent surgery to repair ligament damage in his right foot last week, and "hopes" to be ready for spring workouts.

It's unwelcome news for a player who ended the season on injured reserve with a dislocated ankle. A 16-game starter in 2011, Costa was limited to just three games in 2012. Upgrading their interior line will be a must for the Cowboys this offseason. Costa is a restricted free agent.

Cowboys placed C Phil Costa on injured reserve with a dislocated ankle, ending his season.

OT Darrion Weems has been signed off the Broncos' practice squad in a corresponding roster move. Costa last played in Week 7, and will finish 2012 with only three appearances. Big D will roll with Ryan Cook the rest of the way, who hasn't been a significant downgrade. Costa could get the chance to return as a starter in 2013, but upgrading their interior line figures to be an offseason priority for the Cowboys. Still only 25, Costa will be a restricted free agent.

Cowboys C Phil Costa has been diagnosed with a subluxed right ankle.

He'll have an MRI Monday morning. A subluxation is a dislocation that pops back in. The Cowboys should have more info on the injury by Monday afternoon.

Cowboys C Phil Costa was carted off with a right ankle injury in the second quarter of Sunday's game at Carolina.

It looked like a break. It's bad timing for Costa, who keyed the Cowboys success on the ground in his return to the lineup at Baltimore last week. Ryan Cook will take over as the center, as Costa has been ruled out for the game.

Cowboys C Phil Costa (lower back) is listed as probable for Week 6 against the Ravens.

Costa will resume his starting job with Ryan Cook (hamstring) ruled out for Sunday's game. Despite the Cowboys' offensive line struggles, Cook has graded out as Pro Football Focus' 13th rated center through five weeks. It's not yet known if Cook will be demoted when healthy.

Cowboys C Phil Costa will undergo an MRI on his troublesome back after leaving Wednesday's win over the Giants in the first quarter.

Apparently a good night's sleep didn't do the trick for Costa's back, which has been giving him fits all summer. It's a major concern for the Cowboys, who were forced to go with journeyman Ryan Cook in Costa's absence Wednesday. The good news is, Costa has 10 days to heal up for Week 2 if his MRI doesn't turn up anything major.

Cowboys C Phil Costa exited Wednesday night's NFL opener with a first-quarter back injury.

Costa struggled with a back injury in preseason. He was replaced by Ryan Cook. Costa is hardly a Pro Bowler, but it's more reason to be concerned with Dallas' interior offensive line. It's not getting better anytime soon.

Cowboys C Phil Costa (back) is expected to play in the team's preseason finale on Wednesday.

Costa's troublesome back kept him out of Saturday's game against St. Louis, but he appears on track for tuneup prior to the team's Week 1 affair with the Giants.

Cowboys C Phil Costa is unlikely to play in Saturday's preseason game against the Rams.

Costa has been "day to day" for nearly two weeks, but did suit up against the Chargers last weekend. It will be a major issue for the Cowboys if Costa isn't ready for Week 1, as backup David Arkin has struggled mightily with his snaps.

Updating a previous item, Cowboys C Phil Costa is "day to day" with a lower back injury.

The injury isn't a high-level concern, but Costa is questionable for Monday's preseason game. The Cowboys lack quality offensive line depth with Bill Nagy (high-ankle sprain) and Kevin Kowalski (undisclosed) out indefinitely.
