Cowboys FS Barry Church led all defensive backs with 135 total tackles in the regular season.
It was a breakout season for the fourth-year man out of Toledo, as he topped his previous career-high by over 100 tackles. The Cowboys' suspect linebacker situation for most of the season certainly helped Church's total. We expect to see regression with a healthy Sean Lee back in the fold. Feb 21 - 10:50 AM

The Cowboys will use Barry Church at free safety this season.

At 6'2/220, Church has spent his career as an in-the-box strong safety and situational nickel linebacker. Although new DC Monte Kiffin's scheme calls for interchangeable safeties, shifting Church to free safety is a reminder of the Cowboys' weakness and lack of depth. They'll head into camp with the trio of Will Allen, Matt Johnson and J.J. Wilcox competing to start opposite Church. The latter two have yet to play an NFL snap.

Cowboys SS Barry Church (Achilles') recently said he's "95 percent" recovered.

Church, who tore his Achilles' last September, was fully cleared to participate in OTAs and minicamp earlier this month, so he should be 100 percent healthy well before training camp. Church isn't facing much competition for the starting job, but the free safety spot next to him is up for the taking.

Cowboys SS Barry Church (Achilles) has been fully cleared, and is running with the starters in OTAs.

"He looked like the same guy we saw last year before we lost him to the injury," DBs coach Jerome Henderson said Tuesday. "He’s moving around extremely well. I just hope he continues on the path he’s on." As of now, Church and Matt Johnson are the Cowboys' starting safeties. Injuries limited them to a combined 108 snaps last season, zero of which were played by Johnson.

Cowboys coach Jason Garrett says SS Barry Church's recovery from Achilles' surgery is "ahead of schedule" and going "great."

The Cowboys should hope so, seeing as they signed Church to a four-year, $12.4 million extension even after he tore the Achilles'. Church has resumed running and is expected to battle Matt Johnson in camp to start at strong safety.

Cowboys signed SS Barry Church to a four-year contract extension.

Church is on injured reserve after tearing his right Achilles' tendon in September, but the Cowboys were aiming to extend him before he went down, and are following through on their word. Church would have been a restricted free agent in the offseason, and is now signed through 2016. An on-the-rise, in-the-box safety before his injury, Church is still only 24, and should be healthy for camp and ready to reclaim his starting job.

The Cowboys offered SS Barry Church a contract extension before he tore his right Achilles' tendon at the end of September.

The details of the extension are unknown, but Dallas was trying to lock Church up for the next couple of seasons. Church's agent didn't respond to the offer, so it was never turned down or countered. He is making $540,000 in 2012 and is scheduled to become a restricted free agent after the season. It's highly unlikely that the Cowboys' extension offer still stands after the injury. Church may still be in Dallas' long-term plans, however.

Cowboys SS Barry Church is done for the season with a torn right Achilles' tendon.

He'll have surgery on Tuesday. The Cowboys were already missing FS Gerald Sensabaugh for multiple games. They'll now be without both of their starting safeties in Week 4. Church, a physical "box" safety, looked to be an ascending player in Rob Ryan's defense. He beat out Brodney Pool handily in camp.

Cowboys S Barry Church was forced from Sunday's Week 3 game versus the Bucs with a leg injury.

It's not clear if the injury is related to the quadriceps bruise that limited him in practice this week. Church made a slashing motion across his neck, suggesting he's done for the afternoon. Mana Silva will come on in his place.

The San Antonio Express-News considers Barry Church the "front-runner" for the Cowboys' starting strong-safety job.

Church is competing with veteran Brodney Pool, but Pool didn't get in his first practice until Friday after failing his conditioning test. Coach Jason Garrett hints Church may have secured the job in Pool's absence. "I think he did (take advantage)," Garrett said. "(Church's) body changed a bit and he's a more mature guy. ... He really has taken advantage of the opportunity he's had so far."

The Dallas Morning News believes SS Barry Church is "too good to keep off the field" this year.

Church is competing with Brodney Pool and rookie Matt Johnson opposite Gerald Sensabaugh. Dallas' third safety last season, the hard-hitting Church recorded 28 tackles while playing in less than 20 percent of defensive snaps.

Barry Church and Brodney Pool are splitting first-team reps at strong safety during Cowboys OTAs.

Versatile Gerald Sensabaugh appears to be ticketed for free safety this season. Church is a physical in-the-box enforcer type, while Pool is more of a ballhawking option. We expect Pool to win the job and Church to be the No. 3 safety.

Cowboys S Barry Church says he's regained the full range of motion back in his surgically-repaired right shoulder.

He expects to participate in OTAs. Church will have to hold off rookie Matt Johnson to be Dallas' third safety behind Gerald Sensabaugh and Brodney Pool.

Cowboys S Barry Church underwent shoulder surgery in December.

The procedure was described as similar to Mike Jenkins' surgery, which will require a 4-6 month recovery timetable. Dallas' third safety is in the final year of his rookie contract in 2012.

Cowboys placed S Barry Church (shoulder) on injured reserve, ending his season.

Church's shoulder popped out twice against the Giants on Sunday night. He'll likely need surgery to stabilize the joint. Danny McCray is a candidate to take over third safety duties in sub packages.
