Chargers placed ILB Stephen Cooper (biceps) on injured reserve, ending his season.
Original reports suggests Cooper would be released, but the Chargers will place him on I.R. before likely reaching an injury settlement. The 32-year-old's San Diego career may be over after spending all nine NFL seasons with the Chargers. Tue, Oct 11, 2011 06:37:00 PM

Updating a previous item, Chargers ILB Stephen Cooper will try to play through his torn biceps.

Earlier reports had Cooper undergoing surgery and landing on injured reserve. However, the Chargers are going to see if their backup inside 'backer can be effective at far less than 100 percent. ProFootballTalk.com notes that Gilbert Brown in 2003 and Ken Norton Jr. in 1993 played productively with torn biceps.

Chargers placed ILB Stephen Cooper (biceps) on injured reserve, ending his season.

Cooper was expected to miss 2-3 months after tearing his biceps in Sunday night's preseason game. The 32-year-old was on a one-year contract after drawing no interest from the rest of the league. It's safe to say his Chargers career is over with youngsters Jonas Mouton and Donald Butler as the future inside. Kirk Morrison remains available if the Bolts want veteran insurance.

Chargers agreed to terms with ILB Stephen Cooper on a one-year contract.

He's back for the veteran's minimum. Cooper is 32 years old and the Chargers didn't really want to re-sign him, but he never generated interest on the free agent market. He'll return to San Diego competing for a clear reserve role.

The Dolphins have interest in free agent ILB Stephen Cooper, a source tells the Miami Herald.

It's unclear right now if the Dolphins want to replace Channing Crowder or just promote from within. Cooper is six years older than Crowder and simply isn't as good. They'd be better off turning to Tim Dobbins and A.J. Edds to take Crowder's spot.

The San Diego Union-Tribune's Kevin Acee gives free agent LB Stephen Cooper a better chance to follow Ron Rivera to Carolina than re-sign with the Chargers.

Acee would let Chargers fans "name the bet" that Cooper will not play in San Diego in 2011. The 32-year-old wants to test the open market, and Acee believes GM A.J. Smith will move in a different direction at inside linebacker.

Free agent ILB Stephen Cooper doesn't expect to be back with the Chargers in 2011.

"I think I'm going to have an opportunity to test the market," he said. The 32-year-old Cooper wasn't eligible for a "restricted free agent" tender, and his comments indicate that the Chargers have not contacted him about an extension since the season. Over the past four years, only Quentin Jammer and Shaun Phillips started more games on defense for San Diego.

The San Diego Union-Tribune's Kevin Acee expects the Chargers to allow free agent ILB Stephen Cooper to hit free agency.

"I love the guy," writes Acee. "(But) I'll say it here first: I think Cooper's time in San Diego is done." Cooper has been a highly productive tackler, but turns 32 this offseason and his performance against the run slipped last season. The Chargers are headed for a makeover at inside linebacker.

Beat writer Kevin Acee expects new Panthers HC Ron Rivera to make a run at Chargers ILBs Stephen Cooper and/or Kevin Burnett, both of whom are scheduled for free agency this offseason.

While Rivera appreciates both veterans, he's also confirmed that he's keeping the 4-3 defense intact -- at least initially -- in Carolina. Unless Rivera changes his mind, Cooper and Burnett would fit better elsewhere in a 3-4 scheme.

Chargers placed ILB Stephen Cooper on injured reserve with a sprained left MCL, ending his season.

Darry Beckwith was signed from the practice squad. Cooper, 31, managed 43 tackles in 12 games this season -- his fewest since 2005 -- while contributing to just three turnovers and losing snaps down the stretch to Brandon Siler. Cooper isn't under contract for 2011 and Siler, 25, may be the future at the position. Fellow ILB Kevin Burnett is also a free agent.

Chargers ILB Stephen Cooper (knee) has been ruled out for Week 16 at Cincinnati.

Cooper sustained a sprained left MCL in last week's game. It's big loss for the Bolts as Cooper has been instrumental in the league's leading defense. Brandon Siler and Kevin Burnett will man the middle against the Bengals in Week 16.

Chargers ILB Stephen Cooper (knee) practiced in full Wednesday for the first time since he got injured in Week 1.

Cooper could be returning to a part-time role as Brandon Siler has come on strong in his absence. Siler racked up 11 tackles, a sack and an interception in his two starts.

Chargers ILB Stephen Cooper (knee) is expected to return in Week 3, but only for a limited role.

He'll probably stick to obvious running downs, as opposed to being an every-down player. Brandon Siler was impressive playing in Cooper's place in Week 2, making six tackles, picking off a pass, and helping to bottle up Maurice Jones-Drew (12 carries, 31 yards). Siler is the future at the position.

Steelers ILB Stephen Cooper (knee) is listed as doubtful for Week 2.

Brandon Siler will step in as the new favorite to lead San Diego in tackles vs. Jacksonville. He's a strong IDP fill-in. Cooper, annually the Bolts' tackle leader, was injured Monday night. The extent is unknown. Siler is a great run defender, so Cooper's loss doesn't affect Maurice Jones-Drew.
