Free agent and 13-year veteran LG Alan Faneca will announce his retirement from the NFL on Tuesday.
A nine-time Pro Bowler and six-time first-team All-Pro, Faneca was one of the best guards of his era and a future Hall of Famer. An elite run-blocker, he paved the way for Jerome Bettis and Willie Parker in Pittsburgh from 1998-2007. His level of play had dropped off precipitously the past two seasons, and the lockout presumably tilted the decision toward retirement over the past month or so. The 34-year-old's exit will leave journeymen Rex Hadnot and Jeremy Bridges as the primary candidates to take over at left guard. Tue, May 10, 2011 02:30:00 PM

The Cardinals are still unsure if free agent LG Alan Faneca plans to retire this offseason.

Beat writer Kent Somers suspects the Cardinals have plans in place to move on without him. The team reached out to Faneca when the lockout was temporarily lifted last Friday, but the sides never spoke. Veteran Rex Hadnot would presumably moved into the starting lineup if Faneca calls it a career.

Coach Ken Whisenhunt has informed impending free agent LG Alan Faneca that the Cardinals want him back for another season.

Faneca is still contemplating retirement. This should be a point in favor of returning for 2011, though the Cardinals should probably be aiming higher with Faneca clearly in decline.

Cardinals LG Alan Faneca will consider retirement after the season.

The Cardinals say they are happy with Faneca's play this season, but he graded out as one of the worst left guards in the league for a second straight year in Pro Football Focus' rankings. The 34-year-old will be a free agent this offseason.

Matt Williamson of Scouts Inc. observes that new Cardinals LG Alan Faneca "is more or less washed up."

"He is a declining player that cannot protect very well," Williamson said in an ESPN chat. Though Faneca's release from the Jets was blasted in some circles, the consensus among those who broke down his 2009 play was that the end is nearing for the 33-year-old. The good news for Arizona is that Faneca can still run block, and the Cards will be running more this year.

Cardinals agreed to terms with OG Alan Faneca on a one-year, $2.5 million contract.

Faneca rejoins his old line coach (Russ Grimm) and offensive coordinator (Ken Whisenhunt), and the Cardinals now have a glut on the interior. Rex Hadnot was already slated to battle Reggie Wells and Deuce Lutui for playing time. Whisenhunt confirmed that Faneca won't be handed a starting job, and he's expected to compete for Wells' left guard spot. Beat writer Kent Somers suggests a trade could be in the Cardinals' future.

The Bears won't be signing free agent OG Alan Faneca "unless something changes," according to the Chicago Sun Times.

A "knowledgeable source" confirms to beat writer Sean Jensen that GM Jerry Angelo has yet to contact Faneca. Faneca, 33, is a fall off the cliff candidate. The Bears don't want a repeat of last year's Orlando Pace situation.

Bears GM Jerry Angelo said Monday that free agent OG Alan Faneca is on the team's radar.

"We certainly will look at Alan, as we will any good player that's out there," Angelo said. The Bears have never been sold on current LG Josh Beekman, and Faneca is a fine fit for a power-running offense like Chicago. Faneca, also on Houston and Arizona's radars, says he has yet to hear from Angelo.

Cardinals GM Rod Graves said Monday morning that the team plans to "touch base" with free agent OG Alan Faneca.

Beat writer Darren Urban speculates that this is just a due diligence situation, potentially aimed at getting Deuce Lutui to sign his restricted free agent tender. Faneca probably isn't going to settle for a backup job.

The Texans are interested in free agent OG Alan Faneca.

"I think everybody in football is going to be interested in him," said coach Gary Kubiak. "We're going to check him out to see what he's interested in doing." Faneca has never played in a zone-blocking scheme like Houston's, so it's unclear how he'd fit. The Texans could use help at guard, though.

Director of football operations Kevin Colbert confirmed that the Steelers aren't interested in bringing back free agent OG Alan Faneca.

Faneca was a first-round pick of the Steelers back in 1998 and played in Pittsburgh for ten seasons. The nine-time Pro Bowler is sure to find a taker soon even though his play declined badly last season.

Bears GM Jerry Angelo expressed interest in free agent OG Alan Faneca.

"I don't know who would not consider Alan Faneca, if you had a need at the offensive line," Angelo said. Well, Mike Tomlin, for one. Tomlin said earlier in the day the Steelers have no interest in adding Faneca to their veteran reunion tour. The Bears haven't anointed Josh Beekman the starting left guard yet, so they may be open to adding a veteran.

Jets released LG Alan Faneca.

Faneca, whose impending release was first reported by NFL Network's Mike Lombardi and later confirmed by the Newark Star-Ledger, now becomes an unrestricted free agent. In terms of possible fits, the Cardinals make sense with old pals Russ Grimm and Ken Whisenhunt on the coaching staff, as well as Taitusi Lutui expressing displeasure with not having a long-term deal.

The Jets are expected to formally announce Alan Faneca's release on Monday.

The Newark Star-Ledger notes that of Faneca's $7.5 million base salary, a whopping $5.25 million is guaranteed. They're really biting the bullet to cut ties with a player considered a "leader" in the locker room. It's a slightly risky move, but second-round pick Vlad Ducasse projects as an upgrade.

The Jets have reportedly released LG Alan Faneca.

The headline here reads "Jets release Pro Bowl G Alan Faneca." A Pro Bowler Faneca was in 2009, but he sure didn't play like it. Second-round pick Vlad Ducasse now looks to be locked in at left guard. Faneca, 33, will draw some interest, but won't approach the $7.5 million he was due from the Jets.
