Texans signed DT Jerrell Powe.
The Texans are desperate at defensive tackle after losing Earl Mitchell and Terrell McClain in free agency. Powe fits the bill of a 3-4 nose tackle at 6'2/330 and knows Texans defensive coordinator Romeo Crennel from their time together in Kansas City. Ideally, the 2011 sixth-rounder will be a rotational piece. Mar 19 - 8:58 AM

Chiefs GM Scott Pioli assured that second-year NT Jerrell Powe showed up to offseason conditioning in good shape and will be in the mix for significant playing time this year.

"He came back, and he looks good," said Pioli. Powe had weight problems at Ole Miss and played only seven snaps during his rookie season. He'll compete for playing time with first-round pick Dontari Poe at nose tackle this year.

The Kansas City Star's Adam Teicher believes sixth-round pick NT Jerrell Powe could get significant playing time as a rookie

Both of the Chiefs' 2010 nose tackles, Ron Edwards and Shaun Smith, are free agents, and will both be over age 30 by Week 1. There's still a pretty good chance Edwards is eventually re-signed, but Powe has certainly been drafted into the right situation if he was hoping for immediate playing time.

Chiefs selected Mississippi DT Jerrell Powe with the No. 199 overall pick in the 2011 NFL draft.

Powe is one of the draft's big fallers, as he was thought to be one of the best nose tackle prospects in the nation before a disappointing senior season at Ole Miss. Considered exceptionally strong, Powe is a monster of a run stuffer at 6-foot-2, 335 pounds. However, in addition to improving his condition, he must get much better against the pass.

Ole Miss NT Jerrell Powe measured 6-foot-2 and 331 pounds at Monday's NFLPA Game weigh-in.

The NFLPA game is the old Texas vs. Nation. Powe forewent a chance to play a sixth season at Ole Miss after academic problems plagued him in college. True 3-4 nose tackles are hard to come by, however, making Powe a fairly interesting mid-round prospect. He needs to dominate in practice this week.

Ole Miss DT Jerrell Powe will forgo his final season with the Rebels and enter the 2011 NFL draft.

After academic problems elongated Powe's college career, he'll be 24 in March and one of the oldest draft-eligibles in April. Powe's size (6'2/320) and ability to command double teams are difficult to find, but he is coming off a disappointing season after playing like a future first-rounder in 2009. With good workouts, Powe could probably still flirt with a second-round grade.
