WGR 550 Buffalo expects contract-year DT Marcell Dareus to command in excess of $50 million guaranteed.
Dareus is expected to top Bucs DT Gerald McCoy's seven-year, $95.2 million deal. The Bills are convinced Dareus has put his off-field issues behind him and could extend him after the draft. A two-time Pro Bowler, Dareus has 28.5 sacks through four seasons. Apr 11 - 7:05 PM

Bills GM Doug Whaley said getting a long-term extension done with DT Marcell Dareus will become "priority No. 1" after the draft.

Whaley said an extension with Dareus will be hammered out "in the near future," and even left the door open for something to get done before the draft. Entering the final year of his contract and due $8.06 million, the Bills can lower Dareus' cap number by striking a new deal. The 25-year-old had a couple off-field hiccups last offseason, but the Bills have already said they believe that's behind him. Dareus recorded 10 sacks as a First-Team All-Pro in 2014.

Bills GM Doug Whaley said DT Marcell Dareus' off-the-field troubles are behind him.

Dareus had two incidents with the police last May before showing up to training camp out of shape. He then proceeded to rack up 10 sacks and earn First-Team All-Pro honors. Dareus is as talented as they come on the defensive line, but the Bills have to feel comfortable with his off-field life before offering him a huge payday. Dareus is entering the final year of his rookie deal.

Bills GM Doug Whaley said an extension for DT Marcell Dareus is currently on the back burner.

"After we get done with all the unrestricted (free agents) and all we have to do this offseason then we would start to broach that subject," said Whaley. Dareus had a career-high 10 sacks in 2014, but there is little hurry to scratch out an extension with Dareus under team control for at least one more season. Dareus has a court date May 19 stemming from a road-racing incident last May.
Feb 19 - 8:11 PM

Bills DT Marcell Dareus is scheduled to stand trial for reckless endangerment May 19.

This stems from an incident in May of 2014 when Dareus crashed his car into a tree during an alleged race with teammate Jerry Hughes. We'd expect the case to be resolved before trial and Dareus to avoid league discipline.
Feb 10 - 12:04 PM

Bills DT Marcell Dareus isn't expected to receive an extension this offseason.

Dareus is under contract for $8.06 million in 2015 after the Bills exercised his fifth-year option. He's coming off his second straight Pro Bowl, and should require top-three defensive tackle money. Dareus and LT Cordy Glenn are both free agents after the 2015 season.

Bills DT Marcell Dareus (knee) and RCB Stephon Gilmore (concussion) have been downgraded to out for Week 17.

Corbin Bryant and Stefan Charles will replace Dareus, with Ron Brooks getting the majority of snaps for Gilmore. Dareus had a career-high 10 sacks this year and is a candidate for an offseason extension.

Bills DT Marcell Dareus (knee) and RCB Stephon Gilmore (concussion) are both listed as doubtful for Week 17 against the Patriots.

They're two of Buffalo's top defenders. The absences of Dareus and Gilmore may make it more likely New England builds a big early lead against Buffalo, allowing Bill Belichick to rest his starters in the second half. Or, Belichick may play his starters the entire game regardless. There is much uncertainty regarding playing time in New England this week.

Marcell Dareus' 10 sacks are already the most of his four-year career, and lead all defensive tackles.

2014 isn't a contract year for Dareus since the Bills exercised his fifth-year team option for 2015, but he's treating it like one. Dareus averaged a solid six sacks his first three years in the league, but has been a beast both as a pass rusher and run stopper this season. He'll be a candidate for a massive extension in the offseason.

Bills activated DT Marcell Dareus from the active/PUP list.

Dareus has passed his conditioning test after showing up to camp out of shape. It shows a lack of professionalism, but isn't a concern for Dareus' 2014 status. Dareus is emerging as one of the league's better defensive linemen.

Bills DT Marcell Dareus has agreed to enter an NFL substance-abuse program in order to have his felony drug charges in Alabama dropped.

Dareus skipped training camp on Monday -- though he wouldn't have been able to participate anyway due to his failed conditioning test over the weekend -- to attend a court hearing in Alabama. Next on Dareus' list to have resolved are his traffic violations stemming from a street racing incident over the spring. The tentative expectation is that Dareus will receive a one- or two-game ban.

DT Marcell Dareus will not re-take his conditioning test until Thursday at the earliest.

Over the last year, Dareus has been benched twice for violating team rules, arrested twice and reported to camp significantly out of shape. But the Bills can't afford to give up on a Pro Bowl-caliber talent, especially when they're thin at defensive tackle. "Dareus has a good heart," coach Doug Marrone said. "We will get him in shape. We need him to play football for us."

Bills coach Doug Marrone revealed Sunday that DT Marcell Dareus opened camp on active/PUP because he couldn't pass the team's conditioning tests.

The Bills were the first team to open training camp when they took the field Sunday evening. Dareus went on active/PUP on Saturday. It should only be a day-to-day situation, but is another red flag following Dareus' two offseason arrests, one for drag racing and another for possession of synthetic marijuana. He's also regularly late to team meetings. Although Dareus is a Pro Bowl-caliber player, the Bills have to be growing wary of signing him to a high-dollar long-term extension. They do have Dareus under control for the next two seasons.

Bills placed DT Marcell Dareus on the active/NFI list.

The Bills haven't listed Dareus with an injury, but he's not expected to be available for their first training camp practice on Sunday. It's another setback for a player who has been dealing with multiple off-field issues. Buffalo has also placed OL J.J. Unga on active/NFI.
Sat, Jul 19, 2014 05:04:00 PM

WGR 550 Buffalo reports "there isn't much clarification" on if DT Marcell Dareus will be suspended for the start of the season.

Dareus was arrested for possession of synthetic marijuana in May and is also dealing with misdemeanor charges stemming from a drag-racing incident. The NFL is expected to wait for the cases to play out before making a decision on whether to take disciplinary action. Dareus' Week 1 availability has potential to impact the roster spots of DTs Corbin Bryant and Stefan Charles. The Bills could keep five defensive tackles even if Dareus isn't suspended.
