Mikel Leshoure rushed eight times for 44 yards in the Lions' third preseason game Friday night.
He added two catches for 11 yards on three targets. Leshoure was the No. 4 back through Detroit's rotation, playing behind Theo Riddick. He lost a fumble in the second half, but it was an otherwise solid game. Leshoure should open the season as the top backup to the Lions' three-back committee. He has 98 yards on 23 carries through three preseason games. Aug 22 - 11:28 PM

Mikel Leshoure has received a "surprising number of first-team reps" in camp.

Leshoure is listed as the No. 3 running back on Detroit's unofficial depth chart, ahead of Theo Riddick. After serving as a weekly inactive last year, he's competing for a short-yardage role in OC Joe Lombardi's multiple-back scheme. Lombardi has "prepped Leshoure as though he'll be part of the fold this year." The Lions will likely use the preseason to showcase Leshoure for a potential trade. Leshoure is set to make $645,000 in the final year of his rookie deal.

Mikel Leshoure is the No. 3 running back on the Lions unofficial depth chart.

Reggie Bush is the starter, with Joique Bell listed with the second-team. Training camp depth charts are often meaningless, and reporter Tim Twentyman assures Theo Reddick is still ahead of Leshoure. It's veteran deference from Jim Caldwell. Leshoure remains ticketed for No. 4 duties.
Aug 5 - 7:09 PM

Mike Leshoure reported to training camp at 242 pounds.

Leshoure played at 227 two seasons ago when he led the Lions in rushing, and was at 233 last year. He's always been a big back, but 242 is awfully heavy. Considering Leshoure was never overly explosive, the weight gain isn't a positive in our eyes. The Lions don't seem concerned. Coach Jim Caldwell believes Leshoure is in "very good shape." Leshoure's ticketed for No. 4 duties.

MLive.com's Justin Rogers doesn't envision Mikel Leshoure "having any role" in the Lions' offense "unless there's an injury."

Reggie Bush, Joique Bell, and Theo Reddick are leaps and bounds ahead of Leshoure on the depth chart. The Lions claim Leshoure isn't being viewed as an afterthought, but we're not taking the bait. He's entering the final year of his rookie contract, and will likely ride the bench for much of it before entering free agency next spring. Leshoure just turned 24 in March.
Jul 25 - 11:03 AM

Mikel Leshoure enters camp "seemingly entrenched" as the Lions' No. 4 tailback, behind Reggie Bush, Joique Bell, and Theo Riddick.

Leshoure is a between-the-tackles grinder, whereas Bush, Bell, and Riddick can theoretically all function on all three downs. Leshoure, 24, could be floated as trade bait as the season draws closer. He's on the roster bubble.

Lions RB Mikel Leshoure expects to be more involved in the Lions' offense this season.

That is not a high hurdle considering Leshoure only saw two carries last season, but it is notable because new OC Joe Lombardi comes from a Saints team that utilized three backs. If he beats out Theo Riddick, Leshoure could see 75 to 100 carries in a Chris Ivory-like role. Even on increased carries, Leshoure would need an injury to Joique Bell or Reggie Bush to have fantasy value.

Lions RB Mikel Leshoure has seen an increase in offseason reps with Joique Bell battling a lingering knee injury.

Bell missed the offseason conditioning program and early OTAs, allowing Leshoure to fully familiarize himself with new OC Joe Lombardi. Lombardi hails from New Orleans, where Sean Payton found a way to incorporate three and sometimes four backs. Leshoure could fill a Mark Ingram or Chris Ivory-like role.
May 25 - 11:56 AM

Mikel Leshoure skipped voluntary workouts this week due to a "personal issue."

"He did have a personal issue, let's put it that way," coach Jim Caldwell said. "We knew he was gone and what was happening. We were well aware of it." Leshoure is no higher than the No. 3 running back on the depth chart and has openly said that he'd like to play for a team that will give him more carries. He has one year left on his rookie deal and may be in for another long season.

Mikel Leshoure is skipping voluntary workouts this week.

He's out with a "personal issue." Leshoure is one of four players not in attendance, including Ndamukong Suh, CB Chris Houston (toe), and WR Carlin Isles (rugby). Leshoure likely wants out of Detroit, as he's no higher than the No. 3 running back and might even be No. 4. GM Martin Mayhew has already stated he doesn't want to deal Leshoure.

Lions GM Martin Mayhew has "zero interest" in trading Mikel Leshoure.

Mayhew says he's had "no trade talks of any kind," and expects Leshoure to be a Lion in 2014. The Lions are supposedly committing to the running game, but at best, Leshoure will be a distant third on the depth chart behind Reggie Bush and Joique Bell. Leshoure shouldn't take his spot on the 53-man roster for granted.
Mar 24 - 1:41 PM

Lions GM Martin Mayhew said at the Combine Friday that Mikel Leshoure will have a clean slate coming into 2014.

A 2011 second-round pick, Leshoure was active for three games last season, playing behind Theo Riddick as the No. 4 back. The Lions are expected to put more of an emphasis on the running game under new coach Jim Caldwell, which could lead to roles for more than just Reggie Bush and Joique Bell. "If you go back and look at what the Saints did, they used multiple backs in a lot of different ways," Mayhew said. "I’m encouraged about that for Mikel. It could bode well for him in terms of getting more playing time."
Feb 21 - 5:16 PM

Mikel Leshoure said he wants to be "somewhere they’re going to feed me the rock and I can go eat, man."

Leshoure has found himself on the weekly inactive list for much of the 2013 season and doesn't fit OC Scott Linehan's offensive style. Leshoure strongly suggested that he doesn't want to return to Detroit if the current coaching staff is back in 2014. We don't see Jim Schwartz and company surviving, but who knows. Leshoure, the 57th pick in 2011, has one year remaining on his rookie deal.

Lions OC Scott Linehan says he believes Mikel Leshoure has a very bright future.

Leshoure has been banished to the bench this season, a year after leading the Lions in rushing. "He has a very bright future," Linehan said. "He just needs the opportunities." Those opportunities likely aren't going to come in Detroit unless there's an injury. Leshoure has been active for three games this season, registering two offensive snaps. He's just 23 years old.

Mikel Leshoure said he feels "like I'm better than a reserve player and I have more to give."

"I just want to play," Leshoure said. "I want to play. Like I said before, there’s a lot of speculation just because of the fact that I’m not on the field and people just wondering what’s going on. But I want to play, and that’s it." With Reggie Bush (knee) inactive last week, Leshoure was a game day active but played zero snaps behind Joique Bell and Theo Riddick. Leshoure is reportedly "wide open" to being traded, but the Lions "quickly rebuffed" trade offers from the Colts last week and from other interested teams in training camp.
