Former Lions RB Mikel Leshoure has signed with the CFL's BC Lions.
The former second-round pick hasn't appeared in a game since 2013. He showcased for teams at last year's Veteran Combine but didn't get any bites. Leshoure is still just 25 but it looks like his NFL ship has sailed. Feb 5 - 3:06 PM

Free agent RB Mikel Leshoure managed a 4.61 forty-yard dash at the NFL's Veteran Combine.

He ran 4.59 coming out of Illinois in 2011. Leshoure went on to tear his Achilles' tendon with the Lions and never looked the same, averaging 3.72 YPC on 217 runs before being waived last August. Still only 25, it's unclear what Leshoure has left in the tank, but he's obviously trying to keep his name on the NFL's radar. He had a workout with the Saints last November.

Free agent RBs Mikel Leshoure, Felix Jones and Michael Bush will all participate in the NFL's March 22 Veteran Combine.

That's in addition to other notable names like Michael Sam and Adam Carriker. The event is unlikely to result in many deals that otherwise wouldn't happen, but is certainly a positive addition to the NFL schedule.

Free agent RBs Mikel Leshoure, Andre Brown, Tim Hightower and Brian Leonard worked out for the Saints on Tuesday.

It's a strong indication at least one of Pierre Thomas (shoulder) and Khiry Robinson (arm) won't be ready for Week 11, if not both.

Free agent RB Mikel Leshoure worked out for the Bears.

Leshoure has earned a handful of visits since getting waived by the Lions in August, but has yet to find a contract. That may change as more and more runners go down during the season's stretch run.

Free agent RB Mikel Leshoure worked out for the Broncos on Tuesday.

The Broncos want to add a body behind Ronnie Hillman, C.J. Anderson and Juwan Thompson with Montee Ball (groin) sidelined. Leshoure worked out for the Colts in early September, but has otherwise been greeted by a cold market since his release from the Lions.

Free agent RB Mikel Leshoure will visit the Colts.

It's Leshoure's first-known visit since he was waived by the Lions on Saturday. Indy is among the league's most running-back needy teams, so it makes sense. Leshoure would theoretically slot in as the No. 3 back behind Trent Richardson and Ahmad Bradshaw if signed, but wouldn't be guaranteed to pass Dan Herron.

Lions waived RB Mikel Leshoure.

Leshoure, a 2011 second-round pick who lost his power-back gig to Joique Bell last year, simply didn't have a role. He doesn't play on special teams and Reggie Bush, Bell and Theo Riddick will hog all the carries in Detroit. GM Martin Mayhew almost certainly regrets not trading Leshoure to the Colts last year when he had the chance. In three seasons, he has 217 carries for 807 yards (3.71 YPC) with nine touchdowns and 34 catches for 214 yards. Leshoure, still just 24, should land on his feet despite a rough preseason that saw him average 3.69 YPC and lose a fumble.

Mikel Leshoure rushed eight times for 44 yards in the Lions' third preseason game Friday night.

He added two catches for 11 yards on three targets. Leshoure was the No. 4 back through Detroit's rotation, playing behind Theo Riddick. He lost a fumble in the second half, but it was an otherwise solid game. Leshoure should open the season as the top backup to the Lions' three-back committee. He has 98 yards on 23 carries through three preseason games.

Mikel Leshoure has received a "surprising number of first-team reps" in camp.

Leshoure is listed as the No. 3 running back on Detroit's unofficial depth chart, ahead of Theo Riddick. After serving as a weekly inactive last year, he's competing for a short-yardage role in OC Joe Lombardi's multiple-back scheme. Lombardi has "prepped Leshoure as though he'll be part of the fold this year." The Lions will likely use the preseason to showcase Leshoure for a potential trade. Leshoure is set to make $645,000 in the final year of his rookie deal.

Mikel Leshoure is the No. 3 running back on the Lions unofficial depth chart.

Reggie Bush is the starter, with Joique Bell listed with the second-team. Training camp depth charts are often meaningless, and reporter Tim Twentyman assures Theo Reddick is still ahead of Leshoure. It's veteran deference from Jim Caldwell. Leshoure remains ticketed for No. 4 duties.

Mike Leshoure reported to training camp at 242 pounds.

Leshoure played at 227 two seasons ago when he led the Lions in rushing, and was at 233 last year. He's always been a big back, but 242 is awfully heavy. Considering Leshoure was never overly explosive, the weight gain isn't a positive in our eyes. The Lions don't seem concerned. Coach Jim Caldwell believes Leshoure is in "very good shape." Leshoure's ticketed for No. 4 duties.

MLive.com's Justin Rogers doesn't envision Mikel Leshoure "having any role" in the Lions' offense "unless there's an injury."

Reggie Bush, Joique Bell, and Theo Reddick are leaps and bounds ahead of Leshoure on the depth chart. The Lions claim Leshoure isn't being viewed as an afterthought, but we're not taking the bait. He's entering the final year of his rookie contract, and will likely ride the bench for much of it before entering free agency next spring. Leshoure just turned 24 in March.

Mikel Leshoure enters camp "seemingly entrenched" as the Lions' No. 4 tailback, behind Reggie Bush, Joique Bell, and Theo Riddick.

Leshoure is a between-the-tackles grinder, whereas Bush, Bell, and Riddick can theoretically all function on all three downs. Leshoure, 24, could be floated as trade bait as the season draws closer. He's on the roster bubble.

Lions RB Mikel Leshoure expects to be more involved in the Lions' offense this season.

That is not a high hurdle considering Leshoure only saw two carries last season, but it is notable because new OC Joe Lombardi comes from a Saints team that utilized three backs. If he beats out Theo Riddick, Leshoure could see 75 to 100 carries in a Chris Ivory-like role. Even on increased carries, Leshoure would need an injury to Joique Bell or Reggie Bush to have fantasy value.
