Giants DT Marvin Austin (back) participated in Monday's practice, and still anticipates making his NFL debut Sunday.
"That's exactly my train of thought," Austin said. "I feel good out there and I just got to go to the training room and try my best to do everything I possibly can in my power to control what I can control." Thanks to injury and suspension, Austin hasn't played a non-exhibition football snap since December 26, 2009. He'll be eased in. Mon, Sep 10, 2012 02:55:00 PM

Giants DT Marvin Austin (back) is getting "stronger," and could be ready to return by Week 2.

The injury-prone second-year pro has moved beyond his "little setback." With zero regular-season reps — college or pro — since December 2009, Austin will be eased in whenever he's finally ready to take the field.

Giants DT Marvin Austin (back) "had a little setback," and it's "not clear when he can go."

The injury-prone second-year pro now may miss the start of the regular season. The "little setback" figures to intensify the Giants' search for veteran line help. Whenever Austin finally takes the field, it will be his first live non-preseason action since December 26, 2009, when he was still at North Carolina.

Giants DT Marvin Austin (back) "seems to be getting better."

The word comes from coach Tom Coughlin, who hinted the only reason Austin has yet to resume practicing is concern about "the type of medication he’s on and whether he can practice under that circumstance." With Shaun Rogers done for the year and Chris Canty (knee) questionable for Week 1, the Giants need Austin back as soon as possible.

The initial testing on Giants DT Marvin Austin's back revealed no serious issues.

Austin expects to be fine after resting his back, though coach Tom Coughlin isn't prepared to rule out structural damage. Coughlin suggests Austin will need further testing. With Shaun Rogers out for the season and Chris Canty's (knee) Week 1 status in doubt, Austin's availability is essential.

According to the Newark Star-Ledger, Giants DT Marvin Austin's back "locked up on him" Monday, and the hope is that it's "a minor muscular injury and not a spinal condition."

The 2011 second-rounder is awaiting test results. Austin, of course, missed his entire rookie year with a torn pectoral, and was kicked off the team before his senior season at North Carolina. Aside from a handful of preseason snaps, Austin hasn't played a down of live football since December 26, 2009.

Giants DT Marvin Austin is being examined for a "back issue."

Austin suited up for last week's preseason debut, so it's apparently a new injury. It sounds like he could be forced to undergo surgery, which would be a huge blow for a player who missed his entire rookie season with a torn left pectoral.

Giants DT Marvin Austin indicated that he's 100 percent recovered from last year's torn pectoral injury.

"Everything is perfect," said Austin. "I feel like I felt when I started playing." The 2011 second-rounder hasn't played since his junior season at North Carolina. Austin figures to play a rotational role on the Giants' deep defensive line.

GM Jerry Reese admits the Giants are "worried" about DT Marvin Austin (torn pectoral), who hasn't appeared in a live game since 2009.

Ineligible for his senior season at North Carolina in 2010, Austin missed his entire rookie year with a torn pectoral. He will be brought along very slowly this season, and it will be surprising if he provides anything other than depth along the Giants' deep defensive line.

Giants DT Marvin Austin (torn pectoral) says he'll be ready for OTAs.

Austin says he's resumed weightlifting. A second-round pick last spring, Austin missed his entire rookie season after going down in training camp. Declared ineligible for his senior year of college, Austin hasn't played in a live game since 2009. He figures to be brought along slowly in 2012.

Giants rookie DT Marvin Austin is expected to miss the 2011 season after suffering a torn left pectoral muscle.

The run of back luck on the Giants defense continues, as the trainers room morphs into a M.A.S.H. unit. First-rounder Prince Amukamara is already out 10 weeks. Now the second-rounder's rookie season is a wash. Austin was expected to play a significant role with Barry Cofield gone. By the time the 2012 season rolls around, it will have been almost three years since Austin played in a game.

The New York Daily News' Ralph Vacchiano thinks second-round pick DT Marvin Austin may not be too far away from the Giants' starting lineup.

Free agent Barry Cofield's status is up in the air, Rocky Bernard just turned 32 and the jury still remains out on 2010 second-round pick Linval Joseph. All that could conspire to get Austin's starters snaps next season. It's not a probability, but certainly a distinct possibility.

Giants selected North Carolina DT Marvin Austin with the No. 52 overall pick in the 2011 NFL draft.

GM Jerry Reese is showing tremendous discipline, sticking to his board as opposed to addressing obvious needs. Austin did a nice job of rehabilitating his image over the past month after picking up a reputation as a bit of a con artist. Although he underproduced for the Tarheels before being kicked off the team in 2010, Austin has always been considered a top-notch talent with power, quickness, and explosion. He'll be eased in behind Chris Canty and Linval Joseph up front.

Comcast SportsNet Chicago's John Mullin believes it would be a "stunner" if the Bears didn't land a defensive tackle replacement for Tommie Harris with one of their first two draft picks.

The Bears have shown a noticeable amount of interest in North Carolina DT Marvin Austin, particularly with it looking increasingly unlikely that Corey Liuget will get out of the teens. Chicago is expected to draft an offensive lineman with one of its top two picks as well. Our latest mock draft has them going with Austin at No. 29 and Stefen Wisniewski at No. 62.

The Chicago Sun Times considers UNC DT Marvin Austin a "more likely" option for the Bears at No. 29 than Illinois DT Corey Liuget.

Simply put, Liuget isn't going to make it that far. Austin probably will because he missed all of the 2010 season after an unimpressive first two years as a Tar Heel. Though Chicago's primary need is offensive line, most signs point to a defensive addition at No. 29 with two days before the draft.
