Bears GM Phil Emery says G/T Gabe Carimi, who is skipping voluntary OTAs to train in Arizona, will be welcomed back with "open arms."
"Gabe has made a decision that he wants to stay in Arizona and train," Emery said. "We respect that. And he’ll be welcomed with open arms when he comes back." Carimi claims he's training away from the team because it's in his best interests after multiple knee surgeries. Upon return, Carimi will compete for a backup job with Eben Britton, James Brown, and Jonathan Scott. May 15 - 10:15 PM

Bears G/T Gabe Carimi was absent from OTAs for the second straight day Tuesday.

The sessions are technically "voluntary," but it's a bizarre decision from a player who may be on the roster bubble and is without a set position. He's reportedly training in Arizona, meaning he's 1,750 miles away from the new coaching staff he needs to impress. Perhaps Carimi is trying to force the Bears' hand so he can move on to greener pastures.

Bears G/T Gabe Carimi was a no-show for the first day of OTAs on Monday.

OTAs are not mandatory, but there's usually 100 percent participation. Carimi hasn't been with the team since he participated in voluntary minicamp from April 16-18. The 2011 first-rounder informed the club he'd train in Arizona this offseason, which may or may not go over well with new coach Marc Trestman's staff. The Chicago Tribune suggested Monday that Carimi is on the roster bubble.

The Chicago Tribune believes 2011 first-rounder Gabe Carimi is on the Bears' roster bubble.

The Bears appear to have given up on Carimi at tackle, leaving him to compete for reserve guard duties. Sidelined for a majority of his rookie season by a knee injury, Carimi was an absolute train-wreck as a sophomore. Failing to survive final cuts would solidify Carimi as one of the bigger draft busts in recent memory.
May 13 - 12:55 PM

Bears coach Marc Trestman hinted Tuesday that OL Gabe Carimi is unlikely to see time at tackle this season.

Carimi took snaps at right tackle in Tuesday's voluntary workout, but the Bears are focusing him at guard. "He was hurt all last year," Trestman said. "So we're going to focus on him competing at the guard position with Matt (Slauson)." It's a tacit admission of failure with a player who was the No. 29 pick as a tackle just two years ago. At 6-foot-7, 316, Carimi will be one of the biggest guards in the league.
Apr 16 - 8:03 PM

Bears OL Gabe Carimi is working at three different positions during offseason workouts.

The 2011 first-round bust has yet to look comfortable anywhere on the Bears' offensive line. He'll spend the offseason working at left guard, right guard and right tackle, with his goal being to "secure a starting job at one of them." Head coach Marc Trestman views him as more of a guard than a right tackle. With one of the worst offensive lines in the league, Chicago hopes Carimi can improve in his third season.
Apr 16 - 3:26 PM

The Chicago Tribune expects Gabe Carimi to line up at guard this offseason.

Carimi has been a bust since the Bears took him in the first round of the 2011 draft. Jermon Bushrod is the new left tackle, J'Marcus Webb is moving to right tackle and Carimi is left at right guard. Last year's starter at that spot, Lance Louis, has signed with the Dolphins.
Apr 11 - 10:37 AM

The Bears remain undecided on 2011 first-round pick Gabe Carimi's position.

A bust to this point, Carimi will be given a chance to compete with J'Marcus Webb at right tackle, but also may be the frontrunner to start at right guard. The Bears haven't given up on re-signing free agent RG Lance Louis. If they lose Louis to the interested Dolphins, Carimi would figure to be his replacement.
Mar 17 - 2:25 PM

Bears GM Phil Emery is unsure whether 2011 first-round pick Gabe Carimi will play tackle or guard moving forward.

"I'm sure that will take all the way through camp to find his exact position," said Emery. Carimi was embarrassed -- literally -- in 11 starts at right tackle last season, holding up better in three right guard starts. The Bears still do not seem to be approaching the offseason counting on Carimi as a locked-in starter.

Sources tell ESPN Chicago that RT Gabe Carimi has been benched in favor of Jonathan Scott.

Monday night's humiliating performance against 49ers DE Aldon Smith was the straw that broke the camel's back. Despite Carimi's status as a 2011 first-round pick, you can't give up 5.5 sacks and keep your job. Scott is a journeyman that has previously spent time with the Lions, Bills and and Steelers.

The Bears are considering benching RT Gabe Carimi for veteran Jonathan Scott.

A bottom-10 tackle in Pro Football Focus' rankings, Carimi got flat out embarrassed by 49ers DE Aldon Smith in Monday night's loss, getting tossed around like a rag doll. Carimi is less than two years removed from being the No. 29 overall pick, but unless he's playing injured, there's simply no excuse for the way he performed in Week 11. A change is likely coming for Week 12.

Bears RT Gabe Carimi opened training camp with "no injury concerns" after undergoing two knee surgeries since his rookie year.

He's dropped ten pounds and his body fat percentage from 26 to 19. Carimi also had knee problems at Wisconsin, but the second-year tackle and 2011 first-round pick is healthy now and projected as a starter. Carimi wound up playing only 100 snaps in his rookie year. Pro Football Focus graded him slightly negatively as both a pass and run blocker, but he should be better in 2012.

Bears RT Gabe Carimi practiced Tuesday for the first time since undergoing knee surgery in December.

Carimi underwent a follow-up procedure to connect tissue around his patella and MCL after a right knee subluxation ended his season in November. His participation level is unknown, as Tuesday's session was closed to the media. Wednesday's practice will be open, however.

Bears RT Gabe Carimi (knee surgery) confirmed that he plans to participate in all pre-training camp activities from this point on.

Carimi underwent two knee surgeries last year after dislocating his kneecap in Week 2. The former Wisconsin Badger also had knee issues in college. "I’m feeling really good," he said. "They’re saying another couple of weeks and I’ll be here for [OTAs] and minicamps. I’m just champing at the bit to get back."

Coach Lovie Smith now believes RT Gabe Carimi (knee surgery) will be "good to go" for offseason activities.

Smith was unsure a month ago if Carimi would be ready for OTAs. While Smith insists he's "comfortable" with Carimi at right tackle and J'Marcus Webb at left tackle, the Bears may still look to upgrade early in the draft. Webb surrendered a league-high 14 sacks in 2011.
