Dolphins re-signed RB Daniel Thomas.
The Dolphins lost Knowshon Moreno (elbow) for at least four weeks and Lamar Miller (ankle) is day to day. So they call on Thomas, who was just released at final cuts after losing a camp battle to UDFA Damien Williams and Orleans Darkwa. He'll slide in as pass-down depth behind finesse back Miller, who is tentatively expected to heal up and start against the Chiefs in Week 3. Sep 15 - 10:48 AM

Free agent RB Daniel Thomas worked out for the Patriots on Monday.

The Pats are likely just taking a look-see for their emergency list. It's Thomas' first-known visit/workout since he was waived by the Dolphins at final cuts. Thomas is a former second-rounder who owns a mediocre career 3.6 YPC average.

Dolphins waived RB Daniel Thomas and RB/KR Marcus Thigpen.

The Fins finally admit their mistake on Thomas, whom ex-GM Jeff Ireland traded up to select in the second round of the 2011 draft. Thomas almost single-handedly held Miami's running game hostage for the past three seasons. The team will now move forward with Lamar Miller, Knowshon Moreno, and UDFA Damien Williams, although we wouldn't rule out the Dolphins putting in a waiver claim on a tailback toward the end of final cuts.
Aug 30 - 11:28 AM

ESPN Dolphins reporter James Walker doesn't expected Daniel Thomas to make the 53-man roster.

Thomas made his preseason debut Thursday, rushing 13 times for 38 yards (2.9 YPC) and one touchdown. He simply hasn't done enough this summer to earn a roster spot. Walker expects the Dolphins to keep just three running backs, Lamar Miller, Knowshon Moreno, and UDFA Damien Williams.

Daniel Thomas (hamstring) will play in the Dolphins' preseason finale.

He better. Thomas is on the roster bubble. He's missed most of camp and the first three preseason games with a balky hamstring. Thomas is competing with UDFAs Damien Williams and Orleans Darkwa for the No. 3 job. No longer on scholarship under ex-GM Jeff Ireland, Thomas needs to turn heads Thursday.

Daniel Thomas (hamstring) is inactive for Miami's third preseason game.

Thomas won't play despite returning to practice this week. He's yet to appear in a preseason game and is in danger of losing his roster spot. UDFA Damien Williams will be the No. 3 back through Miami's rotation. Knowshon Moreno and Charles Clay are active, as expected.
Aug 23 - 5:49 PM

Daniel Thomas (hamstring) returned to Dolphins practice Monday.

Thomas missed over two weeks of practice. He now needs to show something over the next two weeks to keep his roster spot. He'll be in big trouble if he's not ready for this weekend's regular-season dress rehearsal.
Aug 18 - 4:12 PM

Daniel Thomas missed the Dolphins' second preseason game with a hamstring injury.

He also missed Miami's exhibition opener. Thomas has been sidelined for at least two weeks, which should continue to decrease his odds of making the Dolphins' 53-man roster. If Knowshon Moreno gets healthy, it's conceivable the Fins could go with just three backs: Lamar Miller, Moreno, and UDFA Damien Williams. Mike Gillislee is also on the shelf with a balky hamstring.
Aug 17 - 3:23 PM

Daniel Thomas is expected to miss Friday's preseason opener with a hamstring injury.

Not good for a player already on the roster bubble. Thomas is competing with Mike Gillislee and Damien Williams for backup duties behind Lamar Miller and Knowshon Moreno. The Dolphins expect Thomas to miss "multiple" practices.
Aug 5 - 9:05 AM

The Miami Herald believes Daniel Thomas remains on the roster bubble entering the preseason.

Thomas has reportedly been "solid but unspectacular in camp so far," while Mike Gillislee "has seemed to be more active." It's conceivable Thomas keeps his roster spot due to Knowshon Moreno's slow knee rehab, but is demoted to fourth string behind Lamar Miller, Moreno, and Gillislee. Reporter Armando Salguero suggests Thomas "is going to have to start running over people" in exhibition games to secure his spot on the 53-man roster.
Aug 3 - 10:57 PM

The Palm Beach Post expects Daniel Thomas to make Miami's 53-man roster.

"Even if (Knowshon) Moreno is ready to go for the season, I now expect Thomas to make it," tweeted beat writer Andrew Abramson. Moreno is dealing with a knee issue that could require surgery, so Miami can't afford to part with running back depth. Thomas is due only $816,321 in the final year of his deal. There's no significant financial incentive for the Dolphins to cut him.
Jun 20 - 7:58 PM

The Palm Beach Post believes Daniel Thomas is on the roster bubble in Miami.

Tweeted beat writer Andrew Abramson, "I'd be surprised if he keeps a roster spot unless Dolphins like his experience for one more season." Experience would indeed be the only reason Miami kept Thomas, who's been painfully ineffective through three NFL seasons. He's currently working with the Dolphins' third-team offense, behind first-teamer Lamar Miller and backup Knowshon Moreno. Mike Gillislee and rookie Damien Williams are putting heat on Thomas' spot.
Jun 9 - 6:03 PM

The Miami Herald expects fourth-year RB Daniel Thomas to "stick around another year."

We've been hoping rookie GM Dennis Hickey would finally admit the mistake of ex-GM Jeff Ireland, who traded up to draft Thomas in the 2011 second round, but the Fins aren't exactly deep at tailback. Thomas would have to get outplayed by Mike Gillislee and/or UDFA Damien Williams to outright lose his roster spot. Knowshon Moreno and Lamar Miller appear locked in as the top-two backs.
May 25 - 4:42 PM

The Miami Herald doesn't expect Daniel Thomas to make the Dolphins' 53-man roster in 2014.

Thomas is entering the final year of his rookie deal. With the addition of Knowshon Moreno and presence of younger and arguably more talented backs Lamar Miller and Mike Gillislee, Thomas doesn't have a spot. The Dolphins are also expected to draft another back. Thomas doesn't do anything well as a runner and doesn't play special teams. His value to a team is minimal.
Apr 1 - 10:01 AM

Following the signing of Knowshon Moreno, Dolphins RBs Daniel Thomas and Mike Gillislee are likely competing for one roster spot.

We would peg Gillislee as the favorite, based on his higher ceiling and lower salary. Thomas has been a colossal disappointment since ex-GM Jeff Ireland traded up to draft him in the 2011 second round. Gillislee only saw six carries in 2013, but he at least still has the potential to develop into something useful. Thomas' days in Miami are likely coming to a close.
