Daniel Thomas has been the Dolphins' clear-cut No. 2 running back throughout minicamp and Organized Team Activities.
As the Miami Herald writes, there's "no mystery" about the Dolphins' tailback depth chart. Lamar Miller is locked in as the first-teamer, with Thomas No. 2 and rookie Mike Gillislee attempting to hold off longer-shot competitors like Jonas Gray for the third-string job. Gillislee could make a move on Thomas in training camp, but Thomas won't be making a move on Miller. Jun 14 - 1:38 PM

Daniel Thomas believes he's a legitimate contender for the Dolphins' starting running back job.

Thomas must not be watching much of his own film. "I don’t know why (Lamar Miller) would have the inside track," Thomas said incredulously Tuesday. "It’s an open competition. Everybody has a fair shot. The best player is going to get the job. Nobody has a leg up." Thomas does admit he's been "inconsistent" since being the No. 62 overall pick of the 2011 draft. All signs suggest the Dolphins want and expect Miller to be their No. 1 back.

The Dolphins are reportedly concerned about Daniel Thomas' ability to be a physical goal-line back.

After two NFL seasons, it's obvious that Thomas is not a difference-making NFL runner. He's averaged just 3.53 yards per carry, scored a mere four touchdowns, fumbled five times and missed seven games due to injury. With Lamar Miller assuming feature back duties, Thomas will simply be trying to carve out any role he can this offseason. If he can't pin down the goal-line job, it's another boost for Miller's rapidly rising fantasy stock.

Dolphins coach Joe Philbin indicated that third-year RB Daniel Thomas will be on the spot in 2013 training camp.

The 62nd pick in the 2011 draft, Thomas has looked no better than a bust through two NFL seasons. His current career YPC average stands at 3.54. Thomas must "play more consistently, eliminate the fumbles and mental errors," Philbin said. The Dolphins could afford to add to their running back stable in the draft.

The Miami Herald suggests that Daniel Thomas is not a candidate to be the Dolphins' starting running back in 2013.

Reggie Bush is expected to walk in free agency, but Thomas has apparently fallen behind Lamar Miller. "Nobody I speak with is saying Daniel Thomas will take over the starting RB job next year. Nobody," said the Herald's Armando Salguero. In his two NFL seasons, the second-round pick out of Kansas State has managed just 3.53 yards per carry. Miller ripped off 4.90 yards per tote as a rookie in 2012.
Jan 29 - 9:32 AM

Daniel Thomas underwent surgery to repair the knee injury that ended his season in mid-December.

The Miami Herald insists Thomas will be "fine by the spring," suggesting his surgery was a routine scope as opposed to a reconstruction. However, the Herald reports Thomas has "fallen behind" Lamar Miller "in the organization's eyes" after a fumble- and injury-prone 2012 season. If the Dolphins don't get Reggie Bush re-signed, they'll be in the market for a running back this offseason.

Dolphins placed RB Daniel Thomas (knee) on injured reserve, ending his season.

Thomas picked up a knee injury of unknown severity in last week's win over the Jaguars. His second NFL season was up-and-down, as he managed just 3.57 YPC but still worked his way into an even timeshare with Reggie Bush in November. With Bush set to hit unrestricted free agency this offseason, Thomas has a chance to grab a stranglehold of the starter's job. He'll be battling Lamar Miller, who will close out this season as the Dolphins' change-of-pace complement.

The Dolphins are considering placing Daniel Thomas (knee) on injured reserve.

The knee injury Thomas sustained against the Jaguars last week doesn't sound overly serious, but there are only two games left in the season. If Thomas does get shut down, the Dolphins will have a chance to get a longer look at Lamar Miller behind starter Reggie Bush.

Daniel Thomas sustained a knee injury in Sunday's Week 15 win over the Jaguars.

Thomas lasted just seven snaps before calling it a day. That left Reggie Bush with 21 carries, his second-highest total of the season and most since Week 2. The nature of Thomas' injury is unknown right now.

Daniel Thomas rushed just once for six yards in the Dolphins' Week 15 win over the Jaguars.

He played behind Lamar Miller for the second straight week. Thomas was a committee back with Reggie Bush around midseason, but he's being phased out of the offense now. We wonder if the 2011 second-round pick might be cut by the Dolphins this offseason. Thomas has no fantasy value for Week 16 versus Buffalo.

Dolphins RB Daniel Thomas played behind rookie Lamar Miller in Week 14 versus the 49ers.

Miller played as Reggie Bush's backup for the first three quarters, but saw only three carries. Thomas didn't appear until the fourth quarter. He's no longer worthy of a roster spot in 12- and 14-team leagues. With Bush due to hit free agency, Miller has a shot at the starting job over Thomas in 2013.

Daniel Thomas rushed twice for three yards in the Dolphins' Week 14 loss to San Francisco.

Thomas played a minimal role for the first time in weeks; he's typically pretty heavily involved as the 1B to Reggie Bush's 1A in the backfield. Bush racked up 19 touches against the Niners -- his highest total since Week 5. Thomas' role figures to be a bit bigger in future games, but he won't be a fantasy option against the Jaguars in Week 15 coming off a two-touch performance.

Daniel Thomas rushed five times for 10 yards and added two catches for 19 yards in the Dolphins' Week 13 loss to the Patriots.

Thomas played well behind Reggie Bush, not getting his first touch until the Dolphins' third offensive series. Over the last five weeks, Thomas is averaging just 9.4 touches per game. He's a mere stash for owners in case Bush goes down.

Daniel Thomas is listed on the Week 13 injury report with knee and ankle issues, but is practicing in full.

Thomas will be fine for Sunday's game, but won't be an intriguing flex play against the Patriots' top-10 run defense. Although it's by a narrow margin, Reggie Bush remains the lead dog in Miami's backfield.
Wed, Nov 28, 2012 07:04:00 PM

Daniel Thomas played on 29 snaps in Sunday's win over the Seahawks while Reggie Bush played on 30.

Bush was flashing some of his old USC cuts, so the Dolphins stuck with him more than usual. The touch count ended up 15-11 in favor of Bush. This continues to be an even timeshare backfield with a hot-hand aspect to it. Neither Thomas nor Bush will be strong plays in Week 13 against a Patriots' defense giving up just 3.90 yards per carry.
