Giants OC Kevin Gilbride says it's "about time" WR Jerrel Jernigan "steps up."
Jernigan, a 2011 third-round pick, will be running routes out of the slot in Victor Cruz's absence this offseason. "He's been here now long enough," said Gilbride. "Until Victor gets back, he'll be the main guy inside. It’s a chance for him to shine and step forward and do the things that we believe he can do." On the roster bubble, Jernigan has three catches for 22 yards in 17 career games. May 11 - 1:34 PM

Jerrel Jernigan has been the "surprise player" of Giants camp so far.

Jernigan has shown "flashes of brilliance" with vertical speed and sure hands. Although Domenik Hixon entered camp higher on the depth chart and Rueben Randle has drawn most of the buzz, Jernigan outplayed both in the first week of camp. He's a legit candidate for the No. 3 role as well as kick-return duties.

Giants OC Kevin Gilbride says 2011 third-round pick Jerrel Jernigan shows flashes of playmaking ability on the practice field.

The Giants didn't trust Jernigan as a rookie (17 snaps). "I am waiting," Gilbride said. "You see it, it is there. There is some quickness and some speed and an ability level that you want to see show up on the field in a consistent way." We like Jernigan's chances of emerging as a 2012 contributor more than Ramses Barden's, but they're both behind Domenik Hixon and Rueben Randle.

ESPN New York expects Giants WR Jerrel Jernigan to contribute as both a kick and punt returner in 2012.

GM Jerry Reese has already singled out Jernigan as an in-house candidate to replace Mario Manningham as the team's No. 3 wide receiver. Playing a part-time role on offense would still allow the 2011 third-round pick to help out on returns. Jernigan will compete with Domenik Hixon for punt return duties. Da'Rel Scott and D.J. Ware will be in the mix on kick returns. Jernigan should be on all 2012 sleeper lists, especially in leagues that award points for return yardage.

GM Jerry Reese hinted Saturday that the Giants will look in-house to replace Mario Manningham if he departs in free agency.

"(We) drafted (Jerrel) Jernigan in the third round. So we expect him to make the jump," Reese said. "Ramses Barden, who we drafted a couple years ago, had some injury issues, we expect him to contribute as well." Jernigan was active just eight times as a rookie, and went without a catch as he played mostly on special teams. Barden has only 15 catches in 17 career games after being a third-round pick in 2009.

Giants rookie WR/KR Jerrel Jernigan (hip) has resumed practicing fully this week.

Jernigan, nicknamed "One Play J.J." by coach Tom Coughlin, missed a week with the injury. He'll be an option on kickoff returns against the Eagles.

Giants rookie WR/KR Jerrel Jernigan expects to miss a week after sustaining a hip injury against the Patriots.

Jernigan earned the nickname "One Play J.J." from coach Tom Coughlin this week because he saw action on just one kickoff return before going down with the injury. He has just one kickoff return for 19 yards on the season.

Giants declared WR Jerrel Jernigan, DE Osi Umenyiora, OT James Brewer, RB Da'Rel Scott, TE Travis Beckum, CB Prince Amukamara, and OG Mitch Petrus inactive for Monday Night Football against the Rams.

Beckum (hamstring), Amukamara (foot), and Umenyiora (knee) are all nursing injuries. Jernigan has failed to earn a game-day roster spot, falling behind even the recently signed Brandon Stokley. Scott is the No. 4 tailback behind Ahmad Bradshaw, Brandon Jacobs, and third-down back Danny "D.J." Ware.

Giants rookie WR/KR Jerrel Jernigan will be sent for an MRI on his left wrist.

Coach Tom Coughlin assured that Jernigan is still in the mix for punt returns, so this doesn't sound like a serious injury. Jernigan had a mixed performance Thursday night, returning one punt for 42 yards but fumbling for the fifth time in two games.

Third-round WR/KR Jerrel Jernigan fumbled four punts in the Giants' third preseason game.

Jernigan's chances of winning the primary punt returner job obviously went out the window. "They were really poor," coach Tom Coughlin said. Domenik Hixon and Aaron Ross are veteran candidates fill the gig.

Giants signed No. 83 overall pick WR/KR Jerrel Jernigan to a four-year contract.

The Sun Belt Conference's all-time leader in catches and receiving yards, Jernigan is an explosive slot prospect. The Giants are likely to re-sign Steve Smith and/or Plaxico Burress, limiting Jernigan's rookie-year impact to kick returns. He could push Dominik Hixon off the roster.

The Giants have "every intention" of putting third-round WR Jerrel Jernigan "directly into the mix" in the return game.

The Giants aren't going to cut a third-rounder, so Jernigan will make Domenik Hixon expendable as long as he doesn't faceplant in preseason action. Depending on Steve Smith's knee and contract status, Jernigan could also see plenty of time in the slot as a rookie.

The New York Daily News' Ralph Vacchiano does not believe third-round pick Jerrel Jernigan will be used out of the Wildcat.

Specifically, Vacchiano says "you can forget about the Wildcat," and that HC Tom Coughlin "wants his quarterback on the field and under center, not split out wide." We suspected as much, and Jernigan seems likely to spend the majority of his rookie season in the slot and on special teams.

The Giants envision third-rounder Jerrel Jernigan as a slot receiver, kick returner, and Wildcat weapon.

The Giants won't want to take the ball out of Eli Manning's hands, so don't look for much Wildcat action. Jernigan could end up pushing two receivers -- Steve Smith and Domenik Hixon -- off the roster. If Smith's free agency ends up restricted, though, he's almost certain to return.

Giants selected Troy WR Jerrel Jernigan with the No. 83 overall pick in the 2011 NFL draft.

Jernigan is an absolute blazer with 4.32-4.38 speed at 5'9/185. The Sun Belt's all-time leader in receptions, receiving yards, and all-purpose yards (he also returns kicks and punts), Jernigan's best fit is in the slot in the pros. The pick makes us curious whether free agent Steve Smith has a future in New York. The two play the same position, and Smith is coming off microfracture knee surgery. The Giants may not re-sign him this summer.
