Free agent WR Jerrel Jernigan recently worked out for the Bucs.
It's Jernigan's first-known visit of free agency. The G-Men are moving on from the 2011 third-rounder, who was limited to two games by a mid-foot sprain last season. Wherever Jernigan ends up, he won't be assured of a spot on the 53-man roster. Thu, Apr 2, 2015 04:48:00 PM

The Giants have decided to move on from free agent WR Jerrel Jernigan.

The decision isn't a surprise after Jernigan missed almost all of 2014 with a mid-foot sprain. He was succeeded by Preston Parker, who despite colossal touchdown-scoring expectations from Dan Gaspar, proved an ineffective slot receiver. The G-Men will welcome back Victor Cruz with open arms.

Giants placed WR Jerrel Jernigan on injured reserve with a mid-foot sprain, ending his season.

WR Julian Talley will take his place on the 53-man roster. It suggests Jernigan is dealing with a dreaded Lisfranc injury, though the Giants say he won't need surgery. Called out by coach Tom Coughlin in training camp, Jernigan had not been an effective as the Giants' fill-in No. 3 receiver this season, catching 6-of-9 targets for 40 yards through 110 snaps. Preseason star Corey Washington should now be in for a bigger role as the Giants await first-rounder Odell Beckham's (hamstring) return. A 2011 third-rounder, Jernigan is in the final year of his rookie contract. He has just 38 career catches.

Giants WR Jerrel Jernigan suffered a mid-foot sprain in Sunday's loss.

He is being "evaluated." Foot injuries are among the trickiest injuries for football players to come back from, especially receivers. Jernigan should be considered doubtful for Week 3, and is likely staring at a multi-week absence. Jernigan has six catches for 40 yards through the Giants' first two games.

Giants WR Jerrel Jernigan caught 2-of-2 targets for 15 yards in Sunday's Week 2 loss to the Cardinals.

Jernigan was targeted seven times in the Giants' opener, parlaying them into 25 yards. It's probably no coincidence that New York's offense actually appeared functional on Sunday with Jernigan's role reduced. Despite playing 70-plus percent of the Giants' offensive snaps, Jernigan has no fantasy value.

Jerrel Jernigan caught four passes for 25 yards in the Giants' Week 1 loss to Detroit on Monday night.

Jernigan was targeted seven times, one behind Larry Donnell for the team lead. Jernigan is an average talent with little upside. He failed to get his head around on a couple of passes his direction and had some communication issues with Eli Manning. Jernigan is waiver-wire fodder in 12-team leagues.

Jerrel Jernigan caught 3-of-4 targets for 22 yards in Friday's preseason game.

His fourth target was a catchable ball he probably should have corralled. Jernigan hast just six grabs for 41 yards through four preseason games. With first-rounder Odell Beckham (hamstring) on the shelf, Jernigan's roster spot is likely secure, but he's further than ever from fantasy relevance.

Coach Tom Coughlin has not been impressed by Jerrel Jernigan this summer.

Asked if Jernigan's progress from 2013 carried over, Coughlin responded, "Not necessarily." With Odell Beckham sidelined for a couple weeks earlier in camp, Jernigan was given a big opportunity in three-wide sets. He didn't take advantage of it. Meanwhile, UDFA WRs Corey Washington and Marcus Harris have been camp stand-outs. Jernigan could be in danger of getting cut.

Jerrel Jernigan caught two passes for 13 yards in the Giants' preseason opener against the Bills.

The Giants' first-team offense played almost exclusively in three-receiver sets, with Jernigan in the Odell Beckham role. The Giants likely appreciate Jernigan's ability to handle himself both outside and in the slot, but the coaching staff doesn't envision him as more than its No. 4 receiver. Expect Jernigan to return to the bench once first-rounder Beckham's hamstring heals up.

Jerrel Jernigan is working as the Giants' No. 2 "X" receiver at Organized Team Activities, behind Odell Beckham.

Rueben Randle is the first-team Z, and Victor Cruz mans the slot. Beat writer Jordan Raanan indicates Jernigan is on the outside looking in at early-season snaps, and is currently penciled in as New York's No. 4 receiver. Jernigan opened the offseason as a hot fantasy sleeper. His stock has tumbled since, with Randle ticketed for a prominent role and Beckham drafted in the first round.

NJ.com's Jordan Raanan believes fourth-year WR Jerrel Jernigan still must "prove himself" to earn significant 2014 playing time.

Jernigan finished 2013 with a small-sample-size flurry, but he'll be hard pressed to earn a regular spot in New York's primary three-receiver set after the team drafted Odell Beckham 12th overall. Victor Cruz mans the slot, and Rueben Randle will play outside, opposite Beckham. Jernigan figures to end up as the No. 4 receiver, playing the second slot position when the G-Men go four wide.

The Packers led the NFL in use of "11" personnel last season.

Ben McAdoo, who was with the Pack from 2006-13, is now the Giants offensive coordinator. And given their lack of talent at the tight end spot, we can safely project him to bring a ton of those one running back, one tight end, three wideout sets to New York. It's fantastic news for Jerrel Jernigan, who is locked in as the No. 3 receiver behind Victor Cruz and Rueben Randle. Jernigan, capable of playing both inside and outside, was fantasy's No. 2 scorer over the final three weeks of last season.

Giants GM Jerry Reese said at the Combine that Jerrel Jernigan finally started to live up to his draft status down the stretch of 2013.

Jernigan posted a 19-237-2 line over the final three games of 2013 and should see an expanded offensive role as the Giants' third receiver in 2014, especially with new OC Ben McAdoo likely to install several three wide receiver sets. He is a sleeper in redraft leagues and worth owning in all dynasty formats.

In a Friday radio interview, Giants coach Tom Coughlin suggested the light flipped on for Jerrel Jernigan in 2013.

Citing fumbles and injuries as the reasons Jernigan played sparingly in his first two NFL seasons, Coughlin said he "saw a different young man late in the season -- a very, very competitive guy." Jernigan's playing time spiked due to Victor Cruz's knee injury, and the slot receiver racked up six-plus catches in each of the Giants' final three games. With Hakeem Nicks likely to leave in free agency, Jernigan projects as New York's third receiver for 2014. The 24-year-old is worth owning in all Dynasty leagues.

Jerrel Jernigan caught six passes for 90 yards with a touchdown and added two rushes for 57 yards with another score in Sunday's 20-6 Week 17 win over the Redskins.

Jernigan was the best player on this rain-soaked field and it wasn't even close. He was the Giants' go-to receiver for the third straight week, this time showing his receiving skills with a silly 24-yard touchdown catch in the back of the end zone and later showing his return man skills by juking his way to a 49-yard touchdown run. Since Victor Cruz got hurt in Week 15, Jernigan has posted 19 catches for 237 yards and two touchdowns. The undersized former third-rounder plays the slot just like Cruz, but the Giants need to find a way to get him on the field more in 2014 -- especially with Hakeem Nicks likely to walk as a free agent.
