Colts placed DT Drake Nevis on injured reserve with a hand injury, ending his season.
NT Josh Chapman (knee surgery, NFI) has been activated in a corresponding roster move. This will be the second straight season Nevis has finished on injured reserve after a back issue landed him there last December. A second-year reserve lineman, Nevis finishes 2012 with 16 tackles and one sack in nine games. He made three starts. He should be 100 percent for Indy's offseason program. Colts reserve DT Drake Nevis left Thursday night's game against the Jaguars with a hand injury and is questionable to return.

Nevis, a second-year player out of LSU, entered the night with 15 tackles and a sack in eight games. He started three games earlier in the season with Fili Moala hurt.

Colts placed DT Drake Nevis (back) on injured reserve, ending his season.

A nagging back injury limited Nevis to 19 tackles in just five games after showing promise early in the season. Provided surgery isn't required, the 2011 third-rounder should push for a starting job in 2012 training camp.

Colts DT Drake Nevis (back) is expected to return to game against the Jaguars this week.

A penetrating three-technique, Nevis will add talent to the Colts defensive line rotation. This remains a dream matchup for Maurice Jones-Drew, as the Colts allow the second-most fantasy points to opposing backs.

Rookie DT Drake Nevis (back) is inactive for the Colts' Week 7 matchup with the Saints.

With starting DTs Fili Moala and Eric Foster out, the trio of Antonio Johnson, Daniel Muir, and Ricardo Mathews will all pick up the slack -- but they are backup and practice squad type talents at best. On the other side, the Saints' run game got a boost when C Olin Kreutz retired, as backup Brian De la Puente profiles as a better blocker. Mark Ingram could be poised for a breakout game against Indy's 30th ranked run defense.

Third-round rookie DT Drake Nevis (back) left Monday's game against the Bucs, but said afterward that he "would be OK."

There's no word on when starter Fili Moala (ankle) will be back and the other starter, Eric Foster, looks headed for I.R. after a gruesome ankle injury. Luckily, the Colts get the Chiefs in Week 5, against whom they should at least remain competitive.

Colts president Bill Polian compares No. 87 overall pick Drake Nevis to Anthony "Booger" McFarland as a penetrating defensive tackle.

McFarland, like Nevis, played at LSU, and both defensive linemen are about 6-foot to 6-foot-1 and 290-300 pounds. "In style of play and stature, he’s an awful lot like Booger," said Polian. "He probably won’t record as many sacks as Fili (Moala) might, but he’s got everything else that you want." Nevis projects as a rotational interior pass rusher as a rookie.

Colts selected LSU DT Drake Nevis with the No. 87 overall pick in the 2011 NFL draft.

Nevis is undersized (6'2/285 is how he was listed last year at LSU) and isn't going to do much against the run. But he is a one-gap penetrator who can get upfield, like most Colts defensive tackles. Nevis led LSU last year in tackles for loss (13) and forced fumbles (three), and will be a "three technique" in Indy's scheme. He will compete for rotational snaps as a rookie.

LSU DT Drake Nevis measured 6-foot 1/2 and 298 pounds at the Tigers' Pro Day on Monday.

He also improved his forty significantly from the Combine, running 4.90 and 4.96 after posting a 5.06 in Indy. Though he's shorter than an ideally built pass rusher, Nevis was highly disruptive at "three technique" tackle in the Tigers' 4-3. He led LSU in tackles for loss (13) and forced fumbles (3) in 2010.

LSU DT Drake Nevis is reportedly missing this week's Senior Bowl due to a case of plantar fasciitis.

It's an injury that can linger without rest, so Nevis is smartly taking it easy on the foot. We're guessing it won't keep him out of February's Combine. Though Nevis was snubbed in Mike Mayock's initial rankings for the draft's top-five defensive tackles, the pass rusher is expected to be a second-round pick.
