Mark Herzlich will open training camp as the Giants' starting middle linebacker.
Herzlich lined up with the first-team defense during OTAs and minicamp. "He has been very commanding," DC Perry Fewell said. "He’s taken a leadership role out there and I think he has some respect from his teammates. Obviously, we want to find out what happens when the pads come on." Jun 14 - 11:50 AM

Mark Herzlich has continued to work as the Giants' first-team middle linebacker at OTAs.

It's unclear whether the Giants have designs on using Herzlich in sub-packages, but he could offer quite a bit of IDP upside if they do. He's likely competing for that role. The other tentative Giants starters are Keith Rivers (strong side) and Jacquian Williams (weak side), with Spencer Paysinger competing.

Giants LB Mark Herzlich lined up as the first-team middle linebacker at OTAs Wednesday.

Herzlich and Dan Connor are competing for the job. Either one would be an upgrade on departed Chase Blackburn. During Wednesday's practice, Herzlich was flanked by Spencer Paysinger and Keith Rivers at outside 'backer.

ESPN New York expects Mark Herzlich and Dan Connor to compete for the Giants' starting middle linebacker job.

An early-round draft pick could also enter the mix. The Giants finished No. 25 against the run last season, and Herzlich or Connor would be an upgrade over since-departed Chase Blackburn. Connor graded out positively in run defense as the Panthers' starting MIKE 'backer in 2011, per Pro Football Focus.

Mark Herzlich is expected to start at middle linebacker in Sunday's game against the Steelers.

Normal starter Chase Blackburn is battling a hamstring injury. It's another chance for Herzlich, who started two games last season but lost his job after he sustained a high-ankle sprain. The inspirational cancer survivor has never recorded more than four tackles in an NFL game.

Mark Herzlich expects to compete for the Giants' starting middle linebacker job this year.

Herzlich started two games in the middle before an ankle injured ended his season in Week 12. The Giants have since re-signed Chase Blackburn and have also talked about moving Michael Boley to the middle. The odds are now stacked against Herzlich emerging as the starter.

Giants LB Mark Herzlich (ankle) returned to the practice field Wednesday for the first time since late November.

The special teamer suffered a severely sprained ankle while filling in for Michael Boley on Nov. 28.

Giants LB Mark Herzlich (ankle) has been ruled out for Week 13.

Michael Boley (hamstring) is practicing this week, so Herzlich would have headed back to a special teams role had he been healthy. He's in a walking boot, a sign that his condition is week-to-week.

Giants LB Mark Herzlich started for injured Michael Boley (hamstring) in Monday's game, but left during the second half with an ankle injury and did not return.

Herzlich said after the game that he believes he's fine, and his X-rays came back negative so we're optimistic he'll suit up next week. After getting gashed for 49 points by the Saints, the Giants will need all hands on deck next week against the Packers.

Rookie Mark Herzlich is expected to get his first career start in Week 11 against the Eagles.

Herzlich is a natural SAM linebacker but will slide over and fill in for injured weak-side 'backer Michael Boley (hamstring). Jacquian Williams is expected to rotate snaps and Spencer Paysinger will back up and provide depth at both positions.

According to the Newark Star-Ledger, undrafted rookie LB Mark Herzlich "hasn't had the sharpest of camps" with the Giants.

Star-Ledger reporter Mike Garafolo acknowledges that Herzlich had a couple of nice plays on Friday, but it sounds like he isn't headed for a roster spot. Herzlich didn't pick the best landing spot, as the Giants are deep at linebacker. If he's waived at final cuts, perhaps a needier team would take a flier.

Giants signed former Boston College LB Mark Herzlich.

It's a solid fit for the cancer survivor. Herzlich's explosion and burst were lacking in his first year back, and several medical concerns expedited his fall out of April's draft. He is a natural SAM linebacker, however, and the Giants have a need there with free agent Keith Bulluck likely on his way out. Also familiar with several members of the New York coaching staff, Herzlich will get a fair shot to win a spot on the 53-man roster.

Boston College LB Mark Herzlich says the 49ers are on the "short list" of teams he'd like to play for.

Herzlich says the Niners have "definitely been in the discussion" when he's talked landing spots with his agent. Herzlich believes he'd be an outside linebacker in a 3-4 scheme after playing on the strong side in Boston College's 4-3. It remains to be seen if he'll regain his quick-twitch athleticism after losing explosiveness following a bout with Ewing's Sarcoma.

Boston College LB Mark Herzlich has decided to forgo an opportunity to play in the United Football League.

Herzlich was the 51st pick in the UFL draft by the Omaha Nighthawks. The former ACC Defensive Player of the Year will take his chances that the NFL lockout ends sooner rather than later, and that a big-league team will want him. Herzlich, like so many medical concerns, fell out of April's draft for physical reasons. If training camps are held, he should get an invite.

Boston College LB Mark Herzlich was selected with the 51st overall pick in Monday's United Football League draft.

He went to the Omaha Nighthawks. The UFL has proposed that undrafted rookies like Herzlich prepare themselves for the NFL by playing in their league until roughly October. By that time, they will have gained some pro-style football experience and would be theoretically more prepared. Players like Herzlich's best bet, if possible, is still to get into an NFL summer camp.
