The Browns expect Phil Taylor to be the nose tackle in their new 3-4 defense.
It may seem obvious, but fellow 330-plus-pound defensive tackle Ahtyba Rubin had a case to play nose, as well. Rubin will likely be a mammoth "five technique" in the Red Bryant mold. Taylor, 25 in April, came off PUP in Week 9 this past season to close strong, grading out positively as a run defender per Pro Football Focus' ratings. Taylor was also a 3-4 nose tackle at Baylor. Browns activated NT Phil Taylor (pectoral) from the PUP list.

Cleveland needs run-stuffing bodies with Ahtyba Rubin battling a recurring calf injury and likely to be sidelined through at least Cleveland's Week 10 bye. Taylor will probably try to be working himself into game shape over the next two weeks, but he can certainly help on obvious running downs. A 355-pound behemoth, Taylor was the 21st overall pick in the 2011 NFL draft.

Browns NT Phil Taylor (torn pectoral, PUP) expects to make his 2012 debut Sunday.

Taylor has yet to be officially activated from the PUP list, but it's a formality at this point. Taylor does not expect to start against the Ravens, instead rotating in. His return will be a huge boost for a defense allowing 131.6 rushing yards per game and 4.4 yards per carry.

Browns NT Phil Taylor (torn pectoral, PUP) could return for Week 9.

Taylor has resumed practicing, but won't play in this week's game against the Chargers. The 6'3/355 run-stuffer's eventual return will be a major boost to a defense giving up 4.52 yards per carry.

Browns NT Phil Taylor (torn pectoral, PUP) will resume practicing this week.

The Browns have two more weeks to activate their starting nose tackle, and there's an outside shot he could suit up on Sunday. Taylor should provide a big boost for a run defense that's allowing 133.7 yards per game and 4.5 yards per carry.

The Browns don't expect to make a decision on NT Phil Taylor (torn pectoral, PUP) until next week.

Taylor won't be taken off the PUP list just yet, but the Browns reportedly "feel good" about his return for the second half of the season. The Browns are 25th in the league in run defense, allowing 131.3 yards per game.

Browns coach Pat Shurmur suggested NT Phil Taylor (torn pectoral, PUP) will be ready to practice when eligible next week.

"He looks great," Shurmur said. "We're hopeful be back soon. Let's just say this: I think he'll be right on schedule." Taylor's return should help a struggling run defense that allowed Ahmad Bradshaw's career game last week.

Browns placed NT Phil Taylor (torn pectoral) on reserve/PUP.

Taylor will be first eligible to return in Week 7, but remains without a concrete timetable for a return. Both Taylor and the Browns have vowed he'll play this season, however. GM Tom Heckert suggested in May that Taylor could be 100 percent by late October or early November.

Browns NT Phil Taylor (torn pectoral) expects to play at some point during the 2012 season.

Yet to be cleared for weight lifting, Taylor insists he will not rush his rehab after listening to advice from teammate D'Qwell Jackson. Expected to start the season on the PUP list, Taylor will likely target a November return.

Browns GM Tom Heckert says NT Phil Taylor (torn pectoral) will "definitely" return during the 2012 season.

"100%," said Heckert. "We think he'll be back end of October, early November. ... It's six months at the most, and that's being very, very cautious. He could be back earlier." Taylor will start the season on PUP, but the Browns expect him to return not long after. Scott Paxson is penciled in as the interim starter.

ESPN Cleveland believes Browns NT Phil Taylor (torn pectoral) could miss up to 12 games.

If so, he could easily end up not playing in 2012. Taylor will almost certainly begin the year on the PUP list, but could be transferred to injured reserve soon after Week 6 if Cleveland's season is already in the tank. Browns beat writer Tony Grossi expects Scott Paxson to open OTAs as Taylor's fill-in, but for rookies John Hughes and Billy Winn to push for snaps.

Browns NT Phil Taylor will undergo surgery to repair his torn left pectoral muscle on Wednesday, May 16.

Because the injury happened before training camp, Taylor will be eligible to begin the season on PUP. And that's likely what he'll do, missing the first six games. Taylor could return around midseason if his recovery goes smoothly, though the Browns' season may already be in the gutter by then. They play the Giants, Ravens, Eagles, Bengals twice, and improved Bills to open the year.

Browns DT Phil Taylor will undergo surgery next week to repair the left pectoral muscle torn while lifting weights on Thursday.

A torn pectoral injury usually costs a player the entire season, though Taylor has an advantage in that it occurred four months before the opener. The timetable should be in the 4-6 month range, leaving Taylor as a candidate to open the season on the PUP list. The loss of Taylor is devastating to a defense with little depth up front. Even with Taylor in the lineup last season, the Browns were a dream matchup for opposing fantasy backs.

Browns DT Phil Taylor is undergoing an MRI for a possible torn left pectoral muscle.

Taylor's agent confirmed the original report from Fox 8 Cleveland's John Telich. Last year's first-round pick, Taylor suffered the injury while lifting weights in Berea on Thursday. If the MRI comes back positive, Taylor could be lost for the 2012 season. The Browns' run defense was bad enough as it was.

Browns DT Phil Taylor's Week 3 knee sprain is not as serious as initially feared, and coach Pat Shurmur expects the rookie to be "fine."

The initial diagnosis was an MCL sprain -- often a multi-week injury -- but Taylor isn't expected to miss any games. In fact, he only missed three snaps against the Dolphins. Taylor has 18 tackles and a sack through three starts.
