The San Diego Union-Tribune has identified RE Corey Liuget as a 2013 breakout candidate.
Liuget was the No. 18 pick in the 2011 draft. He posted 50 tackles, seven sacks, and nine pass deflections in his sophomore season, but insists he's "way more explosive" this year. Liuget's growth is attributed to improved footwork and diet. Despite having a weak roster overall, the Chargers can boast one of the better defensive end tandems in Liuget and Kendall Reyes. The Union-Tribune San Diego reports the Chargers would like to extend RE Corey Liuget "sooner than later."

Liuget, the No. 18 overall pick in the 2011 draft, has two years left on his rookie deal, so there is no rush. GM Tom Telesco has identified Liuget and ILB Donald Butler as two prime candidates for extensions. Liuget, 23, has started 29 games in his first two seasons. In 2012, he registered 51 tackles, seven sacks, and nine batted passes while grading out as Pro Football Focus' No. 8 3-4 defensive end.

Chargers RE Corey Liuget suffered a knee injury in Sunday's loss to the Saints.

It's unclear when Liuget went down, but he was having a monster night before departing, notching a sack while batting down two passes at the line of scrimmage. His status should be updated Monday.

The Chargers are expected to "unleash" RE Corey Liuget this season.

Liuget was a disappointment as a rookie in 2011, recording just 19 tackles and one sack in 15 games. The Chargers desperately need him to rush the passer out of the weak-side end spot and at defensive tackle in the nickel package. San Diego managed just 32 sacks last season, tied for 23rd in the league.

Chargers DE Corey Liuget (ankle) is questionable for Week 4.

The Chargers are getting really thin along the defensive line. Jacques Cesaire (knee) is out at least two games and Luis Castillo (fractured tibia) is out indefinitely. According to the Union-Tribune, Liuget "could be out another week. They'll likely look to the street for help this week.

Rookie Corey Liuget has been named the Chargers starting right defensive end.

It's been a formality since Liuget stood out immediately at the beginning of training camp. The Bolts' pass rush is even more intimidating this year than last, with the explosive Liuget supplanting a mediocre Jacques Cesaire.

Chargers signed No. 18 overall pick DE Corey Liuget to a four-year contract.

Liuget comes in to rush the passer out of the right end spot in San Diego's 3-4. Even though Jacques Cesaire was re-signed last week, Liuget will almost certainly start come Week 1. It's a boost for a defense that tied for second in the league with 47 sacks last season.

Chargers GM A.J. Smith confirmed that No. 18 overall pick Corey Liuget will play right defensive end in San Diego's 3-4 scheme.

The Liuget pick surprised some observers because they considered him a "three technique" in 4-3 defenses, only. But the RE spot in 3-4 schemes is essentially the same position, and Liuget will kick inside on all passing downs, doing exactly what he did in college. The Bolts didn't draft Liuget to stop the run. He'll be rushing the passer the vast majority of the time.

Chargers selected Illinois DT Corey Liuget with the No. 18 overall pick in the 2011 NFL draft.

Like the Patriots just before them, the Bolts passed on Cam Jordan. Liuget led the Fighting Illini in sacks (4.5), tackles for loss (12.5), and QB hurries as a redshirt junior last season, and will particularly help San Diego's pass rush on third downs as an inside rusher. Many draft analysts pegged Liuget as a 4-3 "three technique" tackle, but at 6'2/298 with nearly 34-inch arms, he has necessary length for a 3-4 weak-side end. He'll book end Luis Castillo in San Diego, starting as a rookie.

Jim Thomas of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch considers Illinois DT Corey Liuget the favorite to be the Rams' pick at No. 14.

Thomas ranks the candidates like this: Liuget (35%), Julio Jones (25%), Robert Quinn (15%), and Da'Quan Bowers (5%). It sounds like Thomas has intel leading him to believe St. Louis would NOT draft Bowers with the 14th pick in the draft. Other candidates not discussed would presumably be Missouri DE Aldon Smith, Purdue DE Ryan Kerrigan, and long shot Mark Ingram.

ESPN's Tony Softli, a former high-ranking Rams executive, predicts that St. Louis will draft Illinois DT Corey Liuget at No. 14.

"I think Corey Liuget will be their guy," says Softli. "... I really think they're gonna go with an interior defensive lineman." Softli says he recently spoke to Illinois coach Ron Zook, and Zook compared Liuget to La'Roi Glover, a former Ram and onetime dominant interior pass rusher. ESPN's Todd McShay and Mel Kiper have both mocked Liuget to St. Louis as well.

One veteran NFC scout believes Illinois DT Corey Liuget will be drafted much higher than anyone expects, labeling him the second-best defensive tackle behind Marcel Dareus.

"He's as good as Gerald McCoy but for some reason he's not getting the same exposure," said the scout. "He's not far off from where Tommie Harris was with the Bears when he was healthy. Liuget is maybe stronger. This player is for real." Liuget's stock has skyrocketed since he was given a third-round grade by the draft advisory board. He has a legit chance to be a top-15 pick.

According to NFL Network's Mike Mayock, Illinois DT Corey Liuget is "steadily moving up boards" as the draft approaches.

"I'd much rather have Corey Liuget at 20 than Nick Fairley at 8," added Mayock, citing Liuget's "higher floor" and indicating he's a surefire first-round pick. Liuget has been mocked as early as No. 14 overall to the Rams. While we aren't quite as bold, it's become clear that Liuget is now considered the draft's No. 3 defensive tackle, behind Marcell Dareus and Fairley.

The Rams are reportedly very interested in Illinois DT Corey Liuget.

It was originally assumed the Rams' number one target at No. 14 would be a wide receiver, but with both A.J. Green and Julio Jones expected to be off the board by then, there's a growing consensus they'll take a defensive lineman. If they don't select Liuget, Purdue's Ryan Kerrigan is another possibility.

The Bears haven't drafted a former Illinois player in 25 years.

Then it might be a good time to restart that trend. Georgie Halas, Dick Butkus, and Red Grange were all former Fighting Illini. Illinois DT Corey Liuget is fully expected to be on Chicago's radar with the No. 29 overall pick.
