Chargers restructured DT Corey Liuget's contract.
This is almost certainly a straight pay cut for the 2011 first-round pick, who was scheduled to earn $8 million in 2018. Facing a four-game suspension to open the season, there was talk the Chargers would move on from Liuget, but this restructure makes it likely he sticks around. Apr 16 - 8:22 AM

ESPN's Eric Williams expects the Chargers to retain suspended DT Corey Liuget.

Liuget will serve a four-game suspension for violating the PED policy to start the 2018 season, and he was arguably overpaid ($8 million) even before the ban was handed down. Williams writes Liuget is a good fit for DC Gus Bradley's defense, however, and thinks he will stick around. Of course, that could change if Darius Philon or Damion Square step up during his absence.

NFL suspended Chargers DT Corey Liuget four games for violating the league's policy on performance enhancing drugs.

"I made a mistake and take full responsibility," said Liuget, who claims he took a banned substance accidentally after trusting someone who wasn't "well-versed" with the NFL's policy on PEDs. "I apologize to our fans, my family and the entire Chargers organization." His absence will open up playing time for Darius Philon and Damion Square along the defensive line.

ESPN's Eric Williams listed DT Corey Liuget as "on the bubble" heading into the offseason.

Liuget has not lived up to the six-year, $58-million deal he signed in 2015, but he did play better last season following his move to defensive tackle in the Chargers' new scheme. Perhaps that will be enough to keep him around, but $8 million is a lot to pay essentially a rotational lineman with 4.5 sacks in the last three seasons. The Chargers can save $6.5 million against the cap by cutting Liuget.

Chargers DE Corey Liuget has dropped 17 pounds already this offseason and plans to play at 290.

Liuget played at 315 last season, so it's significant weight loss. He finished last season on I.R. with a foot injury and also battled a knee problem that required minor offseason surgery. Liuget said he wants to play lighter to extend his career and take pressure off his joints. It should also help him play much quicker. Liuget signed a five-year, $51.25 million extension last spring.

Chargers DE Corey Liuget (foot) said he is 'definitely ready' for the start of the offseason program.

Liuget was placed on I.R. in December after fighting through a foot injury he suffered Week 8. His healthy return will be a big boost for the defensive line, but the Chargers still need to address the position in the draft. San Diego gave up 4.8 yards per carry last season, the second-worst average in the league.

Chargers placed DE Corey Liuget (foot) on injured reserve, ending his season.

Liuget had been playing through his foot injury, but the Chargers will shut him down in a lost season. He'll finish 2015 with 34 tackles and three sacks, grading as PFF's No. 38 defensive end. Liuget will be fully healthy in time for OTAs.

He hasn't seen the field since Week 8 against the Ravens. Ricardo Mathews started at right end during his absence.

Updating a previous item, Chargers RE Corey Liuget's new five-year extension is worth $51.25 million and includes $30.477 million guaranteed.

The extension was announced earlier this week, but we'd been waiting on the numbers. The $30.477 million total guaranteed is the second-most guaranteed to a 3-4 end. J.J. Watt received $51.8 million in guarantees. Liuget's $10.25 million per year in new money makes him the league's fourth-highest paid player at his position. The Chargers better hope Liuget takes another couple steps forward in his development because when it comes to 3-4 ends, Liuget isn't yet elite.

Chargers signed RE Corey Liuget to a multi-year contract extension.

Liuget seems to be getting paid more for his potential than what he's actually done on the field. He was PFF's 25th-ranked 3-4 end last season, getting negative marks for his run defense and generating only 38 combined sacks, hits, and hurries as a pass rusher. Still, the Chargers view Liuget as a building block for their defense. The former No. 18 overall pick just turned 25 in March.

The Union-Tribune San Diego reports Chargers RE Corey Liuget's new deal will pay him a little more than $10 million per season.

In other words, it'll be in line with the six-year, $62 million contract recently signed by Saints RE Cameron Jordan. The U-T San Diego reports a deal between the Chargers and Liuget is "imminent," and on Monday Liuget told reporters he hopes "it gets done within the next couple days or week." Liuget is currently under contract through 2015. His extension will span five seasons.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports the Chargers and RE Corey Liuget are "finalizing a lucrative long-term extension."

Indications are the deal will be announced within the next few days. Cameron Jordan of the Saints set the market this offseason for 3-4 defensive ends like Liuget, signing what amounts to a six-year, $62 million deal. Liuget has not been quite as prolific as Jordan, but figures to land something close.

NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reports the Chargers are "quietly" working on an extension with contract-year RE Corey Liuget.

Per Rapsheet, the team has made a new deal a "priority." The No. 18 overall pick of the 2011 draft, Liuget has started all 16 games each of the past three seasons while generating 17 sacks. Liuget is still just 25, and his durability and ability to gobble up quality snaps are additional pluses.
