ESPN Boston considers 2013 a "make-or-break" year for Patriots CB Ras-I Dowling.
Injury prone at Virginia, Dowling has stayed on the shelf in the pros, tearing his quad last October after rupturing a tendon in his leg as a rookie and undergoing offseason hip surgery. Dowling was the 33rd pick in the 2011 draft. He's been an utter bust through two seasons. He may have to display special teams value to win a spot behind Aqib Talib, Alfonzo Dennard, and Kyle Arrington. May 3 - 11:47 AM

Patriots placed CB Ras-I Dowling on injured reserve with a torn quadriceps muscle, ending his season.

It's the second time in Dowling's two-year career that his season will end prematurely on I.R. The 33rd overall pick in the 2011 draft, Dowling was also injury prone at Virginia. He may have to battle for a roster spot in 2013.

Patriots CB Ras-I Dowling injured his quad in Sunday's win over the Jets.

Dowling went down in the fourth quarter and never returned. He's the Patriots' fourth corner.

The Patriots have removed Ras-I Dowling as their primary nickel corner.

Dowling saw extensive playing time in the season opener, but has since been limited to special teams. The Patriots are going with Kyle Arrington as the starter opposite Devin McCourty in their base defense, with Sterling Moore moving to right cornerback in nickel and dime packages.

Patriots CB Ras-I Dowling (hip surgery) participated fully in all offseason activities.

Dowling's health will be a key piece of the Patriots' defense. If 100 percent, he's likely to win the right corner job, thus allowing Kyle Arrington to move inside to the slot. Dowling was able to play in just two contests last season as the Patriots gave up 293.9 yards passing per game.

Pro Football Weekly is hearing that, if healthy, Patriots CB Ras-I Dowling (hip surgery) will start opposite of LCB Devin McCourty.

He'd be getting the nod over Kyle Arrington, who after putting up an NFL-high seven interceptions last season would work the slot in nickel situations. After being selected 33rd overall in the 2011 draft, Dowling started the season opener, but appeared in only two games due to injury.

Though second-year CB Ras-I Dowling (hip surgery) is participating in Patriots OTAs, he's reportedly looked "very stiff" and appears to be "working his way back from the ground floor."

Dowling's surgery repaired a torn tendon in his leg from last September. A rookie starter in Week 1, Dowling is now seeing few OTA reps while apparently still trying to heal from the injury. Dowling will have to hold off Sterling Moore, Will Allen, and Alfonzo Dennard for snaps behind RCB Kyle Arrington and LCB Devin McCourty. We wouldn't bet on Dowling being a big 2012 contributor.

Patriots CB Ras-I Dowling (hip surgery) is progressing in his recovery and has suffered no setbacks.

Originally expected to pass on surgery and return in November, Dowling had the recommended "clean-up" and is well on his way to a full recovery. He will work out with the team in OTAs this week. Dowling is currently penciled in as the team's No. 3 corner behind Kyle Arrington and Devin McCourty.

ESPN Boston reports Patriots CB Ras-I Dowling ended up undergoing a surgical procedure on his upper leg/hip after all.

Dowling was initially expected to forego surgery after tearing a tendon near his hip, but the medical staff decided a "clean-up" would add stability. Dowling has made "great progress" and is "hitting all his checkpoints" in rehab.

SI.com's Peter King reports Patriots CB Ras-I Dowling's (hip) rehab is going "very well," and he'll be ready for "most, if not all" of New England's offseason work.

It would be troubling if Dowling's rehab wasn't going "very well," as he was originally forecasted to be 100 percent by November. Plagued by injury since his final season at Virginia, Dowling enters 2012 as a major question mark.

The Boston Herald reports Patriots CB Ras-I Dowling's (injured reserve) hip pain was the result of a torn tendon in his leg.

The injury does not require surgery, and Dowling is expected to be 100 percent healthy in roughly a month. Since he would then require another 2-3 weeks to get into game shape, the Patriots decided to end his season. Dowling should get a chance to start in 2012, but will enter the season as an injury risk.

Patriots placed CB Ras-I Dowling (hip) on injured reserve, ending his season.

It's a move that makes the Patriots' Friday release of Leigh Bodden all the more baffling. The No. 33 overall pick in April's draft, Dowlling appeared in just two games this season after turning in an injury-plagued senior campaign at Virginia. He has now dealt with hip, hamstring, knee and ankle injuries the past two years. New England's 32nd ranked pass defense is down to just Devin McCourty, Kyle Arrington, and special teamers Antwan Molden and Phillip Adams at cornerback. Ben Roethlisberger could have a career day Sunday.

Patriots CB Ras-I Dowling (hip) resumed practicing on Tuesday.

Dowling has been sidelined since sustaining a thigh injury in Week 3. He had overtaken Leigh Bodden for the starting right corner job before the injury.

Starting RCB Ras-I Dowling (hip) and backup CB Leigh Bodden (groin) will not play in Week 4 against the Raiders, and nickel CB Kyle Arrington is questionable (chest).

New England already allows the NFL's most 20-plus yard completions, and losing 2-3 of their top cover guys will hurt. Denarius Moore is a must-start WR3 with this news, and is also worth a look as a risky WR2 play with upside. Jacoby Ford (hamstring) is questionable and is still an inadvisable play coming off a two-week break, but it wouldn't be surprising to see him produce if he can stay on the field.

Patriots declared CB Ras-I Dowling, SS Pat Chung, DL Albert Haynesworth, WR Taylor Price, TE Aaron Hernandez, RT Sebastian Vollmer, and DL Mike Wright inactive for Week 3 against the Bills.

The Pats are without four key defenders against the highest-scoring team in the league this week. With Hernandez and Vollmer out on offense, Rob Gronkowski, Chad Ochocinco, and rookie OT Nate Solder will be in the spotlight Sunday.
