The Buccaneers plan to use Bruce Carter at middle linebacker.
"Mike" linebacker in Lovie Smith's defense can be a high-production position, so this is news worth filing away for IDP owners. Primarily playing strong-side linebacker in Dallas last year, Carter piled up 68 tackles, one sack, and five interceptions. He will be an every-down player in Tampa Bay. Mar 23 - 5:23 PM

Bucs agreed to terms with LB Bruce Carter, formerly of the Cowboys, on a four-year, $20 million contract.

The former second-round pick can play both the strong side and weak side in a 4-3 defense, but will man the SAM spot in Tampa Bay with Lavonte David locked in at WILL. Last year's SLB Danny Lansanah is a candidate to kick to the middle for the Bucs, replacing free agent MLB Mason Foster. Carter has been a maddeningly inconsistent player throughout his career, but always possessed elite tools. The 27-year-old is coming off a five-interception season in Dallas.

Free agent LB Bruce Carter is expected to visit the Texans.

It sounds like he'll meet with the Bucs first, then head to Houston if Tampa Bay's price isn't right. Whereas Carter would play strong-side linebacker with the Buccaneers, he would become a 3-4 inside linebacker on the Texans.

The Buccaneers will host free agent OLB Bruce Carter.

Carter played in a Lovie Smith-style defense under Rod Marinelli last year in Dallas, picking off five passes. He is best suited to "Sam" linebacker.

Cowboys SLB Bruce Carter will play through a broken left ring finger.

He suffered the injury in practice. Carter just returned from a three-week absence related to a quad issue. His health has taken on increased importance with Justin Durant (biceps) out for the season.

Cowboys SLB Bruce Carter (quad) will miss Sunday's game against the Giants, but expects to return for Week 8.

"I feel good," Carter said Tuesday. "It’s just a matter of getting my strength back and getting myself back in shape." Kyle Wilber will make his second-consecutive start against the Giants.

Cowboys SLB Bruce Carter (quad) is not expected to play Week 6 against the Seahawks.

Carter hurt his quad in Week 4 against the Saints and was saddled with a 10-14 day timetable. If he can't play, look for rookie Anthony Hitchens to get another start on the strong side. Dallas is more optimistic about MLB Rolando McClain's (groin) availability. Carter's been a pleasant surprise for the Cowboys.

Cowboys declared SLB Bruce Carter, DE Davon Coleman, DT Ken Bishop, OT Donald Hawkins, DE Lavar Edwards, QB Dustin Vaughan and LB Korey Toomer inactive for Week 5 against the Texans.

Carter is week to week. He'll be replaced by a combination of Anthony Hitchens and Kyle Wilber.

Cowboys SLB Bruce Carter (quad) is not expected to play in Sunday's game against the Texans.

Carter is considered "week to week." His loss is a downgrade to the Cowboys pass defense. Kyle Wilber will likely replace Carter in base sets

Cowboys SLB Bruce Carter (quad) "could miss some time."

Carter is considered "very questionable" for Sunday's game against the Texans. Carter has played well in coverage this season, but gotten smoked by the run. Either way, an extended absence would be bad news for the league's thinnest front seven.

Cowboys SLB Bruce Carter left Sunday night's Week 4 game against the Saints with a right quad strain.

He's done for the night. Carter had six tackles and two pass deflections before exiting. Kyle Wilber will replace him in base sets.

Cowboys LBs coach Matt Eberflus says WLB Bruce Carter "ramped it up" during the spring.

Nobody has ever doubted Carter's athleticism or talent; he just hasn't put it all together. Entering his contract year, Carter is going to need to play much better if he wants to earn a big payday. He struggled badly against the run last season after being a quality starter in 2012. The Cowboys need Carter to return to form and for others to play over their head for the defense to not get picked apart.

Cowboys WLB Bruce Carter doesn't believe he's an option to replace Sean Lee (ACL) in the middle.

"From what I see, I think they're going to keep me at my same position," Carter said. "I guess they're just going to try guys and work them in and out and just see who fits best." Carter filled in for Lee in 2012, but not 2013. Carter struggled mightily in run defense last season, at one point getting benched.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said he still believes WLB Bruce Carter can be "outstanding."

"We know he can do what this defense calls for and be outstanding," Jones said. "We have some real reasons to be excited about him and certainly he’d be the first to say that he had some things that he’d like to take back." Carter started 13 games last season but was benched for two games in October due to poor play. Pro Football Focus gave Carter a top-eight grade among 4-3 outside linebackers in terms of coverage, but he was a glaring weak spot in Dallas' run defense.
