Eagles LB Casey Matthews has missed the last two preseason games with a high-ankle sprain.

"I'm almost there, there's just a little stiffness in it, they're just trying to get that out," said Matthews. "I should be ready by Week 1." Lining up behind DeMeco Ryans as the second-team middle linebacker, Matthews was having a strong camp before the injury.

Beat writers noted that Matthews looked "huge" at workouts a few weeks ago. The added bulk should help Matthews in the run game, where he was too often washed out as a rookie. Eagles MLB Casey Matthews played 55 of the Eagles' 66 defensive snaps in Sunday's win over the Rams.

Matthews split time with Brian Rolle in the nickel and finished with four tackles. He continues to struggle to get off blocks and was lucky that Lance Kendricks dropped a couple passes behind him. The Eagles are banking on Matthews improving as his rookie year moves on.

The Eagles do not plan on adding a veteran middle linebacker this week, sources tell the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Despite inconsistency in the preseason, fourth-round rookie Casey Matthews has won the job. He'll be a two-down middle linebacker and IDP sleeper to start the season. The Rams figure to spread the field and then run the ball right at Matthews in Sunday's opener. Look for sixth-round rookie Brian Rolle and Jamar Chaney to get the first crack at securing the nickel 'backer spots.

Despite their public stance to the contrary, the Eagles are reportedly "sniffing around other teams" for an alternative to Casey Matthews at middle linebacker.

"Don't be surprised if a move is made in the next few days to bring in someone who can push Matthews for the job," says beat writer Geoff Mosher. If that option fails, the Eagles can move Jamar Chaney back to the middle. Matthews is clearly on the hot seat.

The Eagles have continued to give rookie Casey Matthews all of their first-team reps at middle linebacker in training camp.

Matthews is struggling to shed blocks and still doesn't seem to know the Eagles' system, so he must be an absolute favorite of new defensive coordinator Juan Castillo. We're skeptical as to how long Matthews will keep the job. As long as he does, Matthews will remain one of the top rookie IDP linebackers.

Eagles MLB Casey Matthews "looked slow and confused at times, and physically overmatched at others" in Thursday's 24-14 loss to the Steelers, according to ESPN.com's Dan Graziano.

The game was a nightmare for Eagles fans concerned about linebacker and safety. It was obvious to even the casual observer that Matthews and FS Nate Allen -- returning from knee surgery -- were over-matched. Beat writers are already discussing the possibility of moving Jamar Chaney to the middle and inserting Keenan Clayton into the starting lineup. Alternatively, the Eagles could kick the tires on Lofa Tatupu.

Rookie Casey Matthews is working in the base, nickel, and dime packages as the Eagles' starting middle linebacker.

We're hesitant to anoint Matthews the starter just yet because his tape wasn't that impressive at Oregon, but first-year defensive coordinator Juan Gastillo seems to love him. In the nickel, it's been Matthews and SLB Jamar Chaney. Matthews is the lone dime linebacker. He's looking like a fantastic IDP sleeper.

The Eagles worked fourth-round rookie Casey Matthews as their starting middle linebacker to open training camp.

New DC Juan Castillo praised Matthews' leadership skills, smarts, and "it" factor. Jamar Chaney has been moved to strong-side linebacker. Castillo might switch it up later if Matthews doesn't pick up the system quickly, but he's got a solid month to learn. Matthews now looks like an ideal rookie target in IDP leagues. Keenan Clayton will presumably start on the weak side.

Stewart Bradley will likely be moved to the strong side if he's re-signed, and Jamar Chaney showed well in the middle late last year. Look for Matthews to start out on special teams as a rookie before moving into the starting lineup down the line.

Eagles selected Oregon LB Casey Matthews with the No. 116 overall pick in the 2011 NFL draft.

Matthews, who suffered a shoulder injury at the Combine but should be healthy now, is Clay's brother. You probably already knew that, but don't think this is the second coming of last year's DPOY runner up. Casey isn't a pass rusher, and projects as more of an inside linebacker/special teamer. He was the Ducks' starting middle linebacker, finishing his career with 30.5 tackles for loss, four interceptions, and just one forced fumble.

Updating a previous item, Oregon LB Casey Matthews' shoulder injury suffered at the Combine was just a subluxation.

A subluxation occurs when the shoulder pops out of its joint, but quickly goes back into place. It's a temporary separation. Matthews has since worked out at the Oregon Pro Day and conducted a private workout for Ravens LBs coach Dean Pees on Wednesday. He projects as a fourth- to fifth-round pick.
