Jets will sign OG James Carpenter to a four-year contract worth roughly $4.75 million per season.

After striking out on big-ticket guards Orlando Franklin and Mike Iupati, the Jets settle for Carpenter. The Seahawks' first-round pick in 2011 has struggled with conditioning for much of his career, in part leading to 19 missed games across four seasons. Carpenter, a far better pass-protector than run-blocker, will replace Willie Colon for the Jets. It's an underwhelming signing, though Carpenter is just about to turn 26 years old and offers upside if he can kick the injury bug.

Seahawks declared LG James Carpenter (ankle) inactive for Sunday's Week 12 game against the Cardinals.

The Seahawks had expressed some hope that Carpenter would return this week, but he's not quite ready. No surprises in the rest of their inactives: C Max Unger, TE RaShaun Allen, CB Marcus Burley, LB Kevin Pierre-Louis, LB Allen Bradford and DE Demarcus Dobbs.

Seahawks declared LG James Carpenter, DB Steven Terrell, DB Marcus Burley, LB Brock Coyle, LB Bobby Wagner, OL Andrew McDonald and TE RaShaun Allen inactive for Week 11 against the Chiefs.

Carpenter is dealing with an ankle injury. Wagner is week to week with a toe injury. Burley was doubtful with a hamstring injury.

Seahawks LG James Carpenter confirmed he's down to 327 pounds.

Carpenter has struggled with conditioning throughout his career, but reported to minicamp in "great shape" and has received positive reports this offseason. Seattle declined Carpenter's 2015 option, so he has a chance to reestablish his value in a contract year. Carpenter managed to stay healthy for all 16 games for the first time last season. He's the favorite to start at left guard over Alvin Bailey.

Speaking Tuesday, Seahawks coach Pete Carroll said LG James Carpenter "looks great," and has lost 10-15 pounds.

It's notable for a player who's struggled to stay in shape. Perhaps Seattle declining his fifth-year team option for 2015 got a message across. Carpenter is the favorite to start at left guard, but will have to hold off G/T Alvin Bailey.

The Seattle Times believes the Seahawks' left guard job is James Carpenter's "to take control of for good."

Carpenter and Paul McQuistan shared the position last season, but McQuistan departed via free agency. We'd expect second-year G/T Alvin Bailey to give Carpenter a run for his money in camp. Carpenter has been unable to stay healthy or in shape throughout his career. Bailey is a powerful drive blocker. The Seahawks play the best players. Carpenter's first-round draft status won't matter.

Seahawks declined LG James Carpenter's fifth-year option for 2015.

Carpenter has missed 16 career games due to injuries and struggled when on the field in 2013, so it's an easy decision. He managed to stay healthy for a full season last year, but was a liability in both pass protection and run-blocking. Carpenter is set to make $1.4 million in the final year of his rookie deal.

The Seahawks are leaning toward declining LG James Carpenter's club option for 2015.

Carpenter was the 25th pick in the 2011 draft and has missed 16 career games due to injuries. He did start the NFC Championship game and Super Bowl at left guard last season and appeared in all 19 games but was a liability both as a run blocker and pass protector. Carpenter's roster spot could even be in jeopardy.

The Seattle Post-Intelligencer believes Seahawks LG James Carpenter's roster spot may be in jeopardy.

Carpenter, the 25th pick in the 2011 draft, started 12 games last season, including the playoffs. He was drafted to be a mauling run blocker but has struggled there and in pass protection when he's actually played. Carpenter has one year left on his rookie deal at just over $1.4 million. The Post-Intelligencer thinks second-year UDFA Alvin Bailey may be the future at left guard.

Seahawks LG James Carpenter was forced from Seattle's Week 7 game against the Cardinals with a right foot/ankle injury, but later returned.

The injury-plagued lineman got rolled up, limped off the field and was carted to the locker room. Lemuel Jeanpierre was briefly in the game at left guard, but Carpenter returned after two series.

Seahawks OG James Carpenter (foot) has resumed practicing.

Williams missed a little over two weeks of practice. Paul McQuistan likely locked down the Seahawks' left guard job in Carpenter's absence, at least for Week 1.

Seahawks LG James Carpenter will miss "a couple weeks" with a foot injury.

It's a tough blow for injury-plagued Carpenter, who to date has been one of GM John Schneider's few misses. The 25th overall pick in the 2011 draft, Carpenter now stands a good chance of losing his camp battle with Paul McQuistan.
Sun, Aug 11, 2013 03:35:00 PM

Seahawks LG James Carpenter showed up to training camp in the "absolute best shape" of his three-year career.

It's a good sign after missing all of spring workouts following cleanup surgery on his long-troublesome knee. Carpenter has light-footed mauler potential on the interior, and his return to full health would be a nice plus for Marshawn Lynch's fantasy outlook. Seattle quietly struggled mightily at guard last year.
Fri, Aug 2, 2013 01:50:00 PM

Seahawks LG James Carpenter declared his surgically repaired knee "100 percent" for the start of training camp.

Carpenter's reps will be limited as he tries to bypass Paul McQuistan on the depth chart, and he acknowledges he's rusty. Still, the fact that Carpenter got cleared to open camp has to be a big positive for Seattle. He was the 25th selection in the 2011 draft and GM John Schneider's first ever draft pick.
