Dolphins GM Jeff Ireland had "strong praise" for reserve QB Pat Devlin after the season, suggesting Devlin could take over as Ryan Tannehill's primary backup in 2013.

This is assuming Matt Moore leaves in free agency, which "wouldn't surprise the Dolphins." Devlin has not attempted a regular season pass through two years in the NFL. He went 29-of-49 (59.2 percent) for 246 yards (5.0 YPA), one touchdown, and one interception across three preseason appearances in 2012.

Dolphins declared QB Pat Devlin, WR Davone Bess, CB Nolan Carroll, LB Josh Kaddu, OT Patrick Brown, TE Kyle Miller, and DT Kheeston Randall inactive for Week 17 against the Patriots.

Rookie third-round TE Mike Egnew is -- finally -- active for a game. Bess is out with a hamstring injury. Devlin, Miami's third-string quarterback all season long, is scheduled for exclusive rights free agency in 2013. In other words, he'll return as a deep reserve if he makes the roster in '13 training camp.

Dolphins promoted QB Pat Devlin from their practice squad.

Devlin was a weak-armed game manager at D-IAA Delaware and went undrafted in April. The Dolphins will carry him on the active roster for the final two regular season weeks and give Devlin a shot at a roster spot in the offseason.

Rookie practice squad QB Pat Devlin took the majority of first-team reps at Dolphins practice Wednesday.

Matt Moore (concussion) was out. Devlin has yet to be formally promoted from the practice squad, but it sounds like he may be prior to Sunday's game against the Bills. Moore is still expected to start in Week 15.

Once viewed as one of the 2011 draft class' more intriguing quarterbacks, Devlin had a disastrous pre-draft period and ended up attempting just five passes during the preseason. His NFL ceiling is third quarterback.

Dolphins agreed to terms with former Delaware QB Pat Devlin.

Devlin had one of the worst offseasons of any player we've ever seen, completing just 2-of-7 passes in the Shrine Game and showing up 30 minutes late to his Pro Day. That being said, he has the size and ability to make a roster as a backup quarterback. With Tyler Thigpen expected to leave and Chad Pennington gone, Devlin will have a solid chance to stick in Miami.

Delaware QB Pat Devlin reportedly had a miserable Pro Day Tuesday, so bad it could cost him a spot in the draft altogether.

Devlin has strung together one of the worst offseasons of any draft-eligible quarterback, completing 2-of-7 passes for 22 yards and a pick in January's East-West Shrine Game before Tuesday's display. The Penn State transfer showed up 30 minutes late to his Pro Day, and his passing drills were littered with under- and over-throws. FCS scouting guru Josh Buchanan believes Devlin may off draft boards after the brutal performance.
