Browns DE/OLB Jabaal Sheard may be relegated to a "rotational sub off the bench" following the Barkevious Mingo pick.
The Browns were expected to shop Sheard during the draft, but either found no takers or simply decided to keep him. Sheard is signed cheaply through 2014, so perhaps Cleveland will trade him next offseason, before his contract expires. Paul Kruger is locked in at strong-side linebacker. Sheard and Mingo will battle to rush off the weak side. Top-six picks don't typically ride the pine. May 3 - 7:14 PM

ESPN Cleveland's Tony Grossi believes the Browns will trade one of OLB/DE Jabaal Sheard or DE/DT Ahtyba Rubin.

Sheard and Rubin aren't believed to be great fits for the new 3-4 scheme, and both players are young and skilled enough to bring back some value. Sheard, 24 next month, has 15.5 sacks in his two seasons. Rubin, 26, goes 6-foot-2 and 330 pounds, and he is strong versus the run with a bit of pass rush skill. The Browns are without a second-round pick, so that's likely the asking price.

New Browns head coach Rob Chudzinski believes Jabaal Sheard is capable of making the transition from 4-3 end to 3-4 outside linebacker.

"It’s something he’s done some," Chudzinski said. "Obviously that will be something he’ll learn and keep working on. I know that (in the 2011 draft) there were a lot of 3-4 teams that were interested in him as well." Sheard did line up with his hand off the ground as an outside linebacker on 161-of-1016 snaps last season, but that number will obviously be much higher in 2013. With his new position designation, Sheard's IDP value will take a significant hit. Rush outside linebackers tend to produce poorly in most fantasy scoring systems.
Feb 23 - 9:24 AM

New Browns DC Ray Horton hasn't decided how he'll use DE Jabaal Sheard in his 3-4 system.

It's been assumed Sheard will make the transition to outside linebacker. "Jabaal is a guy that I have seen on film that can rush the quarterback and is athletic," Horton said. "What we are going to do as a coaching staff is put each one of our guys in the best position. … He can be a linebacker, he can be (an end). I want him to tell me what he can do best and not put a label on what he is." Horton has said he isn't married to a 3-4 front, but Sheard is still likely to see the majority of his snaps at linebacker. Coming off a promising rookie campaign, Sheard took a step back in 2012, so a position switch might not be the worst thing.

Browns LE Jabaal Sheard believes NT Phil Taylor's return to the lineup in Week 9 helped spike his production.

Taylor is a 330-plus-pound mammoth defensive tackle, and he commands double teams. "Having Phil back was a big part of my success last week," Sheard said. "Even though they were sliding toward us, when Big Phil’s in there, he takes up two people. So, it’s like one-on-one on the outside." Sheard had eight tackles and a sack in last week's loss to Baltimore, and he should stay hot.

Despite having just one sack through five weeks, the Browns remain high on second-year DE Jabaal Sheard.

Coming off a strong rookie campaign, Sheard's numbers are down this season, but the Browns believe he's been fundamentally-sound and drawing more attention from offenses. "I have no problems with Jabaal and the way he plays the game," DC Dick Jauron said. "He’s playing at a high level. I think the longer he plays, the better he’s going to get and his numbers will get there."

Second-round rookie LE Jabaal Sheard leads the Browns with 5.5 sacks and five forced fumbles through 12 games.

The Cleveland Plain Dealer already places Sheard "in the discussion" of the best pass rushers drafted by the expansion-era Browns. The former Pitt star has been an every-down player in Cleveland, grading out in the top-10 among all defensive ends, according to Pro Football Focus. He's a building block for Dick Jauron's defense.

Jabaal Sheard was moved to left end in Sunday's win over the Colts.

Both Sheard and Jayme Mitchell like to play on the left side, but Mitchell moved to the right yesterday and it paid dividends. Sheard was everywhere, recording his first sack, first forced fumble and first fumble recovery. He also stuffed Delone Carter for a big five-yard loss that forced a field goal in the third quarter.

Browns agreed to terms with No. 37 overall pick DE Jabaal Sheard on a four-year, $5.09 million contract.

The 2010 Big East Defensive Player of the Year racked up nine sacks as a senior and 20 in four years at Pitt. A fluid athlete with a mean streak, Sheard is expected to start immediately at right defensive end in Dick Jauron's 4-3 scheme.

Second-round pick Jabaal Sheard is expected to be the Browns' Week 1 right defensive end this season.

The Cleveland Plain-Dealer's Tony Grossi reports that "unless something unforeseen happens," that is where he will be. Sheard may end up seeing some time at left end, as well, but if he looks good on the right side early on, he has a chance to be a 16-game starter there as a rookie.

Browns No. 37 overall pick Jabaal Sheard confirmed that he's back to full strength following offseason elbow surgery.

Sheard played through the injury since high school and was the 2010 Big East Defensive Player of the Year, so it hasn't affected him much. The surgery was characterized at the time as "almost elective." Sheard projects as the Browns' starting right defensive end, although he'll likely see time on both sides.

Browns selected Pittsburgh DE Jabaal Sheard with the No. 37 overall pick in the 2011 NFL draft.

The 2010 Big East Defensive Player of the Year, Sheard had first-round grades from numerous teams. This was an excellent bookend pick for 340-pound Phil Taylor, who should attract plenty of double teams. Sheard is a relentless, explosive pass rusher (1.59 10-yard split) who racked up 20 sacks in four years at Pitt, including nine as a senior. He also forced four fumbles last year. Sheard shouldn't struggle to start at right end as a rookie.

Both Peter King of SI and NFL Network's Mike Lombardi consider the Patriots likely to trade out of pick No. 33.

King is giving New England a "68.74%" chance to trade out of the top spot in round two, while Lombardi tweeted that his "sense is no" regarding whether the Patriots take a player at 33. If the Pats stand pat, they are expected to take a pass rusher -- presumably either Jabaal Sheard or Brooks Reed. But if they trade out, they could set themselves up for three first-rounders in 2012.

Both SI.com's Don Banks and Mike Reiss of ESPN Boston have Jabaal Sheard going to the Patriots at No. 33 in their second-round mocks.

ESPN's Michael Smith, live in Foxboro, also mentioned Reed as a serious possibility at 33, along with Arizona's Brooks Reed. Many draftnics believe Sheard is more of a 4-3 defensive end than 3-4 outside linebacker, although those sort of nitpicks are rarely meaningful to teams. Sheard wouldn't be covering tight ends in New England. He'd be rushing the quarterback.

Pitt DE Jabaal Sheard is "back to normal" after undergoing elbow surgery in December.

Sheard had the "almost elective" surgery to fix an old high school injury that he played through during his Pitt career. He's scheduled to visit the Ravens late this week before undergoing a medical re-check in Indy. Rotoworld's Evan Silva has Sheard pegged to the Jets at No. 30 overall.
