Tests revealed that Cecil Shorts sustained a Grade 2 hamstring strain in Friday's practice.
In other words, it's more severe than standard early-camp tightness. Shorts will be sidelined at least two weeks, adding more injury concerns to his outlook. He underwent groin surgery in December and sat out almost all offseason workouts with calf and hamstring issues. Jul 27 - 7:25 PM

Jaguars WR Cecil Shorts is expected to miss "several weeks" with a hamstring strain.

The injury forced Shorts from practice on Friday. Injuries have become a bugaboo for Shorts, who missed most of OTAs and all of minicamp with a hamstring injury and has been limited by injuries each of the last two seasons. Shorts should be ready for the start of the season, but it is hard to be confident he will play a full 16 in 2014.

Jaguars GM Dave Caldwell reiterated the team wants to sign Cecil Shorts long term.

Shorts is entering a contract season. "I’ve been in communication with his agent and we’ve had good talks," Caldwell said. "We’re trying to find a happy ground with what’s best for Cecil and what’s best for us. We obviously would like him here for the long term." In June, the Florida Times Union suggested Shorts could command Doug Baldwin money. Baldwin has a three-year, $13 million deal.

Cecil Shorts (hamstring) had to leave Friday's training camp practice early with hamstring tightness.

We normally don't post injuries like this, but it's becoming a concern after he missed most of OTAs and all of minicamp with a balky hamstring. The injuries have been piling up for Shorts the past season-and-a-half or so. It's something to monitor this summer. Shorts is expected to play in the slot more in 2014.
Jul 25 - 12:27 PM

Jaguars WRs Cecil Shorts and Mike Brown are participating in Larry Fitzgerald's summer camp in Minnesota.

The "Fitzgerald Camp" is a two-week workout session that has served as a prelude to breakout wide receiver years in the past, although both Shorts and Brown attended last year's Fitz Camp as well. Per Brown, "about 30" players are participating this year, including Dwayne Bowe, Andre Roberts, Kyle Rudolph, Ryan Mallett, and Chiefs CB Sean Smith. Shorts appears to have recovered from his June hamstring injury, which cost him most of OTAs and all of minicamp.

Cecil Shorts (hamstring) won't participate in this week's minicamp.

Shorts sat out most of OTAs, as well. It's not a major concern and shouldn't affect his availability for training camp, but Shorts has become increasingly prone to injury the past year or so. He battled a concussion in 2012 and was hampered by calf, shoulder, and groin injuries last season, the last of which required surgery.
Jun 17 - 1:14 PM

The Florida Times Union thinks Doug Baldwin's deal with the Seahawks could be a template for contract-year WR Cecil Shorts.

Baldwin inked a three-year, $13 million contract that includes $8.5 million guaranteed. Shorts and Baldwin's career numbers are eerily similar despite Shorts playing nine fewer games over the same timeframe. He's been a big-time beneficiary of garbage time. 42.9 percent of Shorts' receiving yards came in the fourth quarter last season. The Jaguars are expected to let injury-prone Shorts play out his contract, though the two sides have had "general" talks.
Jun 8 - 10:44 AM

The Jags have had "general" contract discussions with Cecil Shorts, who is going into the final year of his rookie deal.

"Obviously, we want him here for the long haul," GM David Caldwell said. "He's a valuable part of our organization and we'd love to at some point in time take care of Cecil." Shorts is the Jags' clear-cut No. 1 receiver, but is coming off an injury-marred 2013, and has two high draft picks to contend with in the receiver corps. It's unlikely either side is in a rush to get a deal done.
May 13 - 4:47 PM

Cecil Shorts is not yet fully recovered from his December sports hernia surgery.

Shorts is entering the final year of his rookie deal, and expects to be 100 percent shortly. "I’m on the right path where I’m able to run without any pain," he said. "I still have some work to do and I’m not 100 percent yet, but I’m looking to get there soon. Now, I have to get my strength back and confidence back." Still only 26 years old, Shorts returns as Jacksonville's clear-cut No. 1 receiver with Justin Blackmon continuing to serve an indefinite suspension.
Apr 23 - 9:35 PM

ESPN Jaguars blogger Michael DiRocco expects the team to wait to extend Cecil Shorts' contract until during the season.

Shorts is entering the final year of his rookie deal, which is set to pay him a $1.389 million base salary. As much as he flashed in 2012, Shorts took a step back this past season as he dealt with a shoulder injury and sports hernia operation that sent him to I.R. Considering who Shorts has had throwing him the football, he's been a major bright spot. As long as the Jaguars upgrade the quarterback position, Shorts shouldn't have a problem betting on himself.

Cecil Shorts said he will need six weeks of rehab following last week's sports hernia surgery.

In other words, Shorts should be ready for the entire offseason program. His Dynasty value remains intact as an underrated yet excellent receiver just waiting for an end to the Blaine Gabbert/Chad Henne era. Sports hernia injuries don't usually linger once they're corrected via surgery, as fellow wideout Greg Jennings can attest.

Cecil Shorts (injured reserve) underwent sports-hernia surgery Thursday.

It's an operation that typically requires 4-6 weeks of recovery time. Shorts should be healed in time for the Jaguars' offseason program. Although Shorts had a down year compared to his breakout 2012, he remains a high-upside stash in Dynasty leagues. A real quarterback could do wonders for his fantasy value. Chad Henne won't be under center for Jacksonville in 2014.

Jaguars placed WR Cecil Shorts (groin) on injured reserve, ending his season.

There's no reason for Shorts to push through his latest aggravation in the final two games of the season. He'll get a jump on his impending surgery and rehab, and then return at 100 percent for the final year of his rookie deal in 2014. Shorts' 2013 season ends with a disappointing 66 catches for 777 yards, three touchdowns and one 100-yard game as he struggled through both injury and inept quarterback play. He's still long on explosive talent, but it's not going to shine through consistently until the Jaguars get a real NFL quarterback under center.

Coach Gus Bradley said Monday the Jaguars are "seriously" considering shutting down Cecil Shorts (groin) for Weeks 16 and 17.

In a blog post titled, "Shorts' season likely over," beat reporter Ryan O'Halloran writes that Bradley, Shorts, and GM Dave Caldwell will meet this week to discuss the possibility of shutting down their top receiver. O'Halloran believes "the decision is pretty clear," and Shorts won't be playing in the last two games. Shorts needs offseason surgery to repair the groin. If he were at risk of doing more damage by trying to play through it, it would be in the team's best interest to let Shorts get an early jump on the procedure and ensuing rehab. Look for Mike Brown and Ace Sanders to close out the year as Jacksonville's starting wideouts.

Coach Gus Bradley said Cecil Shorts' groin injury is not improving.

Shorts sat out the entire week of practice leading up to Week 15 and the loss to the Bills. That apparently wasn't enough to get his troublesome groin right and now it sounds like the Jags are seriously thinking about shutting him down for the final two games. Ace Sanders, Mike Brown and Kerry Taylor will likely close out the season as the Jags' top-three wideouts.
