ESPN Jaguars blogger Michael DiRocco expects the team to wait to extend Cecil Shorts' contract until during the season.
Shorts is entering the final year of his rookie deal, which is set to pay him a $1.389 million base salary. As much as he flashed in 2012, Shorts took a step back this past season as he dealt with a shoulder injury and sports hernia operation that sent him to I.R. Considering who Shorts has had throwing him the football, he's been a major bright spot. As long as the Jaguars upgrade the quarterback position, Shorts shouldn't have a problem betting on himself. Cecil Shorts said he will need six weeks of rehab following last week's sports hernia surgery.

In other words, Shorts should be ready for the entire offseason program. His Dynasty value remains intact as an underrated yet excellent receiver just waiting for an end to the Blaine Gabbert/Chad Henne era. Sports hernia injuries don't usually linger once they're corrected via surgery, as fellow wideout Greg Jennings can attest.

Cecil Shorts (injured reserve) underwent sports-hernia surgery Thursday.

It's an operation that typically requires 4-6 weeks of recovery time. Shorts should be healed in time for the Jaguars' offseason program. Although Shorts had a down year compared to his breakout 2012, he remains a high-upside stash in Dynasty leagues. A real quarterback could do wonders for his fantasy value. Chad Henne won't be under center for Jacksonville in 2014.

Jaguars placed WR Cecil Shorts (groin) on injured reserve, ending his season.

There's no reason for Shorts to push through his latest aggravation in the final two games of the season. He'll get a jump on his impending surgery and rehab, and then return at 100 percent for the final year of his rookie deal in 2014. Shorts' 2013 season ends with a disappointing 66 catches for 777 yards, three touchdowns and one 100-yard game as he struggled through both injury and inept quarterback play. He's still long on explosive talent, but it's not going to shine through consistently until the Jaguars get a real NFL quarterback under center.

Coach Gus Bradley said Monday the Jaguars are "seriously" considering shutting down Cecil Shorts (groin) for Weeks 16 and 17.

In a blog post titled, "Shorts' season likely over," beat reporter Ryan O'Halloran writes that Bradley, Shorts, and GM Dave Caldwell will meet this week to discuss the possibility of shutting down their top receiver. O'Halloran believes "the decision is pretty clear," and Shorts won't be playing in the last two games. Shorts needs offseason surgery to repair the groin. If he were at risk of doing more damage by trying to play through it, it would be in the team's best interest to let Shorts get an early jump on the procedure and ensuing rehab. Look for Mike Brown and Ace Sanders to close out the year as Jacksonville's starting wideouts.

Coach Gus Bradley said Cecil Shorts' groin injury is not improving.

Shorts sat out the entire week of practice leading up to Week 15 and the loss to the Bills. That apparently wasn't enough to get his troublesome groin right and now it sounds like the Jags are seriously thinking about shutting him down for the final two games. Ace Sanders, Mike Brown and Kerry Taylor will likely close out the season as the Jags' top-three wideouts.

Cecil Shorts (groin) has no intention of shutting it down for the season.

Shorts has been playing through groin soreness since early October and his latest aggravation caused him to sit out Sunday's loss to the Bills. He's going to rehab this week and try to get right for the Week 16 home finale against the Titans. Even if he does, Shorts won't be a strong WR3 play against the Titans' strong corner duo while at less than 100 percent.

Cecil Shorts (groin) is inactive for Week 15 against the Bills.

Shorts has been playing hurt all season, but the latest aggravation of his groin injury proved to be too much. Shorts should be considered questionable for Week 16. His absence leaves Ace Sanders, Mike Brown and Kerry Taylor as the Jaguars' top three receivers. Only Sanders is worth WR3 consideration.

A source tells ESPN's Adam Schefter that Cecil Shorts (groin) won't play in Sunday's Week 15 game against the Bills.

Shorts' latest groin aggravation proved too much for him to overcome this week. It leaves the Jags with Mike Brown and Ace Sanders as starting wideouts. And with Maurice Jones-Drew (hamstring) also expected to sit, Jordan Todman will be at running back. We're not expecting the Jags to generate very much offense despite a plus home matchup with the Bills.

Cecil Shorts (groin) practiced on a limited basis Friday and is listed as questionable for Week 15.

He also revealed Friday that he needs postseason surgery on the groin. Shorts will be a game-time decision against Buffalo, as previously announced by coach Gus Bradley. He'll be a dicey WR2/3 in fantasy semifinals week.

According to Jaguars coach Gus Bradley, Cecil Shorts (groin) and Maurice Jones-Drew (hamstring) could both be game-time decisions for Week 15.

Joy to the world. Shorts has been playing hurt all season, but his groin has become a bigger issue after "flaring up." Sunday's showdown with the Bills' burnable secondary was set to be Shorts' first good matchup in weeks, but now he's shaping up as a risky WR2. The fact that Shorts has been playing at less than 100 percent nearly all year is working in his favor, but owners need to have a back-up plan ready.

Cecil Shorts (groin) and Maurice Jones-Drew (hamstring) both missed practice again Thursday.

As previously reported, Jones-Drew won't test his hamstring until Friday and remains very questionable for Sunday's game against the Bills. Shorts' status is getting murkier as well. Beat writer Hays Carlyon says the groin issue is "flaring up" and calls the Jags' No. 1 wideout a "question mark." If Shorts can't go, Mike Brown and Ace Sanders would be Chad Henne's top-two receivers. The good news is that we'll know Shorts' status nice and early Sunday as kickoff is scheduled for 1pm ET.

Cecil Shorts (groin) did not practice Wednesday.

Shorts rarely practices on Wednesdays, so it's not a concern for his Week 15 status. He'll be safe to use as a WR2 for Sunday's matchup against the Bills.

Cecil Shorts caught just two passes for 13 yards in Jacksonville's Week 14 win over the Texans, but managed to find the end zone.

Shorts was inches away from a much bigger night, as he drew a 33-yard pass-interference penalty, and was overthrown on what would have been a wide-open 59-yard touchdown. He also drew a defensive-holding call. As it is, Shorts finished with only six targets after combining for 23 in Weeks 12-13. Shorts will be a WR2 against the Bills' burnable secondary in Week 15.

Cecil Shorts (groin) is active for Week 14 against the Texans.

Shorts has yet to miss a game this season despite considerable missed practice time. Coming off back-to-back solid efforts, he's a low-end WR2 against Johnathan Joseph and the Texans' pass defense.
