Dolphins RG Danny Watkins "struggled with playing fast" and "worried about making too many mistakes," according to former Eagles teammate Jason Kelce.
Watkins was released last week and went through waivers unclaimed before signing with the Dolphins for the third-year veteran minimum. Despite limited playing time last year, he rated as the No. 54 overall guard by Pro Football Focus and struggled mightily in pass protection this preseason. Watkins is expected to serve as a strict backup to John Jerry. Sat, Sep 7, 2013 02:38:00 PM

Dolphins signed OG Danny Watkins to a one-year contract.

Watkins was cut by the Eagles on Saturday, taking rumors that he doesn't like to play football with him. It ended a two-year run that saw the former Canadian fireman go from "safe" first-round pick to inept backup. Watkins can only play guard, so he won't be able to help the Dolphins if Jonathan Martin faceplants. The deal is likely for the third-year minimum of $555,000.

CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora reports the Dolphins plan to sign free agent OG Danny Watkins.

Watkins' agent, Joe Panos, is denying the report by saying, "Not true. I'm his agent. I think I would know." Watkins worked out for the Dolphins on Monday after going unclaimed on waivers Sunday. He'd be nothing more than a guard-only reserve in Miami, making him a candidate to be a weekly inactive.

The Dolphins worked out free agent OG Danny Watkins on Monday.

The Dolphins need guard help. There's been speculation -- fueled by Eagles GM Howie Roseman's recent comments -- that Watkins lacks passion to play football. He's apparently still interested in collecting paychecks, if he's willing to work out for teams. Watkins went unclaimed on waivers Sunday.

Eagles 2011 first-round pick Danny Watkins passed through waivers unclaimed and is now a free agent.

According to the Philly Inquirer, "word is" Watkins still wants to play football, even if he didn't act like it with the Eagles. He was not claimed because of a high salary from his rookie contract. Watkins could wind up resurfacing for the third-year NFL minimum, assuming he wants to go through with it.

CSN Philly's Rueben Frank suspects ex-Eagles first-round pick Danny Watkins' playing days are over.

Based on getting to know Watkins in the locker room, Frank believes the 23rd overall pick in the 2011 draft's "heart was (n)ever in football," and Frank thinks Watkins "doesn't like playing the game." This is probably the best explanation for why a player so highly regarded fell flat on his face in the NFL. We're still interested to see if Watkins gets claimed on waivers.

Eagles waived OG Danny Watkins.

Considered a "safe" first-round draft pick in 2011, Watkins was a complete bust in two seasons with Philadelphia, getting rag-dolled on the field and often struggling to stay on it for injury and performance reasons. He may still get some looks on waivers from teams that liked Watkins coming out of Baylor. Watkins' college teammate, Jason Smith, has also been a total NFL flop.

CSN Philly expects the Eagles to part ways with 2011 first-round OG Danny Watkins at final cuts.

Coach Chip Kelly offered Watkins tepid praise after Thursday's preseason finale. "There's always really some good out of Danny, but there's also some mistakes out of Danny," Kelly said. "So it's gonna be a battle when you feel good about your (starting) five." Watkins has started just 18 games in two years. He's been a massive bust. The only thing saving him could be his fully guaranteed salary.

Eagles OG Danny Watkins reported to the team facility with a concussion on Monday.

Watkins was experiencing "headaches," potentially stemming from the Eagles' preseason opener. Missed time will hurt Watkins' chances of making the team. The 2011 first-round pick has played like a bust through two seasons.

Eagles OG Danny Watkins is currently behind journeyman Allen Barbre on the depth chart.

With LG Evan Mathis recovering from ankle surgery, Watkins had a chance to prove he belongs on the roster as a backup. Instead, Barbre has been taking all of the first-team reps in Mathis' absence. The former first-round pick is long past bust status, and is a candidate for release.

Eagles OG Danny Watkins is a candidate for release.

The former first-round pick is out of a starting spot after the team drafted RT Lane Johnson with the No. 4 overall pick, pushing incumbent RT Todd Herremans to right guard. Watkins has been thoroughly terrible in his two seasons. According to Pro Football Focus, Watkins has given up 31 hurries in 23 games. If he can't find a job in the NFL, the CFL's BC Lions hold Watkins' rights.

Philly Mag suggests G Danny Watkins could be a candidate for release.

Watkins, the No. 23 overall pick in the 2011 draft, has conjured up thoughts of legendary Eagles draft busts such as Mike Mamula and Jerome McDougle. It got so bad last season that he lost his starting job to a street free agent and finished out the year as a healthy scratch. Chip Kelly will make his own evaluations, but it's clear Andy Reid had given up hope. Watkins reportedly carries a $2.15 million hit if he's cut before next season.

Eagles G Danny Watkins is a healthy scratch once again in Week 17.

It's Watkins' second straight healthy scratch as he's lost the starting right guard job to street free agent Jake Scott. The Andy Reid regime has whiffed on a lot of first-round picks over the last 14 seasons, but taking Watkins 23rd overall in 2011 could go down as the worst selection. Nick Foles (concussion) is active, but will not see the field as Michael Vick gets an audition. The rest of the Eagles' inactives: WR Greg Salas, RB Chris Polk, OL Matt Kopa, TE Evan Moore, DT Fletcher Cox and LB Mychal Kendricks.

Even though Danny Watkins (ankle) is healthy, Jake Scott will continue to start at right guard.

It's another blow to the stock of Watkins, the Eagles' first-round pick last season. Scott has come off the street and solidified the offensive line, whereas Watkins was a major part of the early-season problem.

Eagles RG Danny Watkins (ankle) is tentatively expected to return for Sunday's game against the Redskins.

Watkins has been a liability for much of this season, but his return will at least be a talent upgrade for the much-maligned Eagles' offensive line. Expect him to slide back into the starting right guard spot, kicking Dennis Kelly to right tackle and King Dunlap to left tackle. That will put turnstile Demetress Bell back on the bench.
